Minji's POV

-Seven years, May-

Where was I?

I felt like I was swimming up the Hybe pool, the surface of the water miles and miles away. Noises began to be heard in my ears and I felt a pain in my neck, almost like a very bad sore throat that was both inside and out. I tried to remember how he had hurt me, but only shadows moved around my head. I pushed them away.

Where was I?

Mom? I wanted to be with my mom.

I felt the tears, hot and heavy, escape from my closed eyes, down my cheeks. I tried not to cry, I shouldn't cry. I must protect others, like my uncle Soo-hyun. I saw him and he was crying, he was screaming at the sky and on his knees right there on the pavement.

Oh no, oh no. Do not think about that.

I tried to move my body, but it felt like someone had tied weights to my arms and legs, even my fingers and toes. I thought I might be moving a little, but I wasn't sure.

I heard a woman's voice say, "Shhh, she's waking up. Let her do it slowly. Let her do it alone."

Mom, mom. Please let her be here too. Please be well. Please don't stay on the side of the road.

Warmer tears slipped from my eyes.

My whole body suddenly felt like hot pins and needles were stuck in my skin. I tried to scream for help, but I didn't even think to part my lips. Oh God, the pain seemed to be waking up everywhere, like a monster coming to life in the darkness under my bed.

After a few minutes of just breathing, getting closer and closer to what I could feel was the surface, I opened my eyelids, squinting because there was a bright light right above me.

"Turn off the light, Jiwoo," I heard to my left.

I opened my eyes again, letting them adjust to the light, and saw an older nurse with short blonde hair looking at me.

I opened my lips. "Mom" I tried to say, but nothing came out.

"Shhh," the nurse said, "don't try to talk, honey. You had an accident, you're in the hospital, Minji, and we're taking good care of you, okay? My name is Yuna and that's Jiwoo." She smiled sadly and pointed to a younger nurse behind her, checking something on the machine next to my bed.

I nodded. Where was my mom? More tears fell down my cheeks.

"It's okay, good girl," Yuna said. "Your Uncle Taehyung is right outside. Let me go get him. He'll be very happy that you're awake."

I stood there staring at the ceiling for a few minutes before the door opened and closed and Uncle Tae looked me in the face.

"Welcome back," he said. His eyes were red all around him and it looked like he hadn't showered in a long time. But Uncle Taehyung always looked a little weird in one way or another. Some days he had his shirt on backwards, other days he wore two different shoes, I thought it was funny. He told me it was because his brain was so busy working on more important things that he didn't have time to think about whether his clothes were on properly, I thought that was a good answer. Plus, he handed me nice things like candy and ten dollar bills, he told me to open a stash somewhere where no one could find my money, he said I'd thank him later, and winked at me like he knew what "later" was when he arrived.

I opened my mouth again, but Yuna and Uncle Tae shook their heads and Yuna reached for something on the table next to her. She turned around with a notebook and a pencil and she handed it to me.

I took it from her and took it out, writing one word:

MOTHER?

Yuna's eyes moved away from that word and Uncle Tae looked at his feet. Just then, the whole accident came flooding back to my brain: images and words hitting my mind, so I hit my head against the pillow and gritted my teeth.

I opened my mouth and screamed and screamed and screamed, but the room remained silent.

What do you think it caused the accident? I'd like to hear your theories...
