Minji's POV

-Seven years, April-

"Take my hand! I've got you," I said very softly, the helicopter rose from the ground as the soldier took Snake's hand. He was playing as quietly as I could, my mom was beat up again and I didn't want to wake her up where she was sleeping in her room. She had told me to watch cartoons in bed with her and I did that for a while, but when I saw she was asleep, I went downstairs to play with my toys.

The helicopter landed and my dolls jumped out and ran under the chair I had put a towel on to make it part of an underground bunker. I lifted the helicopter off the ground with a "wow" sound. Wow!. I wish I could snap my fingers and make this a real helicopter. Then I would pull my mom and we would fly out of here, away from him, away from my mom's black eyes and tears. I didn't care where we ended up as long as it was far, far away.

I crawled back to my bunker and a few minutes later, I heard the front door open and close, and then heavy footsteps walking through our foyer and down the hall to where I was playing. I looked out and saw a pair of shiny black shoes and what I knew were uniform pants.

I crawled as fast as I could, and said, "Uncle Soo-hyun!" as he knelt and I threw myself into his arms, making sure to stay away from the side where he kept his gun and the police flashlight.

"Hi, baby," he said, hugging me. "How's my rescue hero?"

"Good. See the underground fortress I built?" I said, leaning over and pointing proudly over my shoulder at the fort I had made under the table using blankets and towels. It was great.

Uncle Soo-hyun smiled and looked behind me. "Of course. You did a good job there, Minji. I've never seen a fortress as impenetrable as that." He winked and smiled bigger.

I smiled "Do you want to play with me?" I asked.

He ruffled my hair, smiling. "Not right now, later, okay? Where's your mom?"

I felt my own face fall. "Um, she's not feeling very well. She's lying down." I looked at Uncle Soo-hyun's face and into his golden brown eyes. The image that immediately came to mind was the sky before a storm, dark and a little scary. I backed away a little, but just as quickly as that, Uncle Soo-hyun's eyes cleared and he pulled me towards him again, squeezing me.

"It's okay, Minji, it's okay," he said. He pulled me away from him and clung to my arms as his eyes moved over my face. I smiled at him, and he smiled back.

"You have your mom's smile, you know that?"

I smiled bigger. She loved my mom's smile; she was warm and beautiful and made me feel loved.

"But I look like my dad," I said, looking down. Everyone said I looked like him.

He stared at me for a minute, as if he wanted to say something, but then he changed his mind. "Well, that's a good thing, sweetheart. Your dad is a handsome demon." He smiled at me, but he didn't meet her eyes. I looked at him, wishing I looked like Uncle Soo-hyun. My mom once told me that he was the most handsome man she had ever seen in her entire life. But then she looked guilty like she shouldn't have said that. Probably because he wasn't my dad, I figured. Furthermore, Uncle Soo-hyun was a police officer, a hero. When he grew up, I was going to be like him.

Uncle Soo-hyun stood up. "I'm going to see if your mom is awake. Keep playing with your toys and I'll be down in a minute, okay?"

"OK." I nodded. He messed up my hair again and then walked towards the steps. I waited a couple of minutes and then followed him in silence. I took a step around each squeak, holding onto the railing to move forward. I knew how to be calm in this house. It was important that I knew how to be calm in this house.
