Hanni's POV

I started working at Norm's Diner early the next morning. Norm himself worked in the kitchen and was mostly grumpy and grumpy, and he didn't talk to me much, but I saw him giving Maggie looks that could only be described as adoration. I suspected that he was actually a big softie, it didn't scare me. I also knew that I was a good waitress and that Maggie's stress level had dropped significantly an hour after I started, so I figured I had a conversation with Norm from the beginning.

The restaurant was bustling, the work was easy, and the locals who ate there were pleasant. I couldn't complain, and the first few days passed quickly and without problems.

On Wednesday, after getting off work, I drove home, showered, changed and put on my bathing suit, a pair of denim shorts and a white tank top, intending to go to the lake and explore a bit. I put the leash on Milly and locked it behind me.

As I was leaving my house, Anne called me from her patio where she was watering the rose bushes, I walked towards her smiling.

"How are you adjusting?" she asked me, leaving her watering can and walking towards the fence where I was standing.

"Good! I was meaning to come and thank you for telling me about the position at the restaurant. I got it and now I'm a waitress there."

"Oh, that's great! Maggie is a gem. Don't let Norm scare you, he barks but doesn't bite," he said, "Where are you going?"

I laughed. "I realized that pretty quickly." I winked. "No, it's been good. I was just going to drive down the road and see the lake a little."

"Oh, good. The docks aren't very good for walking here, of course, you've probably figured that out. If you go to Briar Road, you can follow the signs to the little beach." She gave me brief instructions and then added, "If you want it, I have a bike that I no longer use. With my arthritis, I just can't grip the handlebars to feel safe, but it's practically new and it even has a basket for your dog." She looked at the little dog in question. "Hello what's your name?" She smiled at Milly and Milly snorted happily, dancing a little.

"Say hello, Milly." I smiled.

"What a cute girl you are," Anne said, leaning slightly to let Milly lick her hand.

She stood up and said, "The bike is in my guest room. Would you like to see it?"

I paused. "Are you sure? I mean, I'd love to ride a bike to the lake instead of taking my car."

"Yes, yes," she waved me toward her as she started walking toward her house. "I'd love to see it in use. I used to pick blueberries that way, they grow wild, bring a couple of bags and you can put them in the bike basket when you're done. Do you bake?"

"Um," I said, following her to her cabin, "I used to. I haven't done it in a long time."

She looked at me. "Well, maybe blueberries will inspire you to put on an apron again." She smiled as she opened a door right next to the main room.

Her cabin was casually decorated with well-worn, slipcover-covered furniture and plenty of knick-knacks and framed photos. The smell of dried eucalyptus hung in the air. It immediately felt comforting and happy.

"Here we go," Anne said, pushing a bicycle out of the room she had entered seconds before. I couldn't help but smile, it was one of those old bikes with a big basket on the front.

"Oh my gosh! The bike seems fabulous. Are you sure you want me to ride this?"

"Nothing would make me happier, dear. In fact, if it works for you, keep it."
