Context: Leah is out of the World Cup due to her ACL injury, and she goes to see the girls off before they head to Australia, but she's upset that she can't go with them, and because she is leaving Y/N to go with the girls on her own for the first time.
In this story, Y/N is Leah's adopted younger sister, who was adopted when Leah was 11, from a care home where she had been abused from many foster carers.

Leah's POV

"Have you got everything you need?" I asked Y/N.

"I think so." she said. "Knowing me I will have forgotten something, but I can easily ask the girls if I do."

It broke me that I wasn't able to travel out with the girls for the world cup. Because of rehab and many hospital appointments, I couldn't fly out until later in the tournament. With that in mind I prayed that they'd reach those later stages; I knew they had it in them, but they didn't believe it themselves.

"Are you excited?" I asked, as I helped Y/N carry her bags down the stairs.

"I can't wait. My first major tournament, and it's a world cup! I just wish you could play with us too." Y/N replied.

"Me too," I sighed. "But I will be watching every game and cheering you on from home, and then once these appointments are done with I'll be flying straight out to see you. Remember I'm staying at Jacob's."

Y/N nodded, giving me a smile.

It was time to head to camp to drop Y/N off with the girls, they were travelling to the airport together on the bus, which made me feel a little less nervous knowing Y/N was safe in their care.

It was the first time since we adopted Y/N when we were kids that she was going away on her own without me. Jacob and I had always protected her from everything, knowing her past we knew we had to keep her safe, and with that came that constant support from us. Y/N was such a shy little girl, and never really grew out of it, always hiding away and looking up to others in everything.

Mum helped Y/N put the bags in the car, encouraging me to sit down in case I put too much pressure on my knee. I got in the back of the car and strapped myself in, waiting for Y/N to come and sit next to me. When she opened the door, I saw her face light up with excitement.

"I can't believe this is happening." she smiled.

"We're all so proud of you Y/N." Mum said as she got into the car.

"You'll smash it my little angel." I whispered, grabbing Y/N's hand as Mum reversed out the driveway.

"I hope so. I want you to come with me though." Y/N said, her smile turning into a frown.

"I know, and I'll see you in about a month, but until then, I'll be a call or a text away no matter what, okay?" I replied, trying to keep myself composed.

"The team isn't the same without you." Y/N sighed.

"You'll be back in no time Leah." Mum chipped in.

I couldn't keep myself together after that. I lay my head onto Y/N's chest, tears streaming down my face and onto her hoodie. I had tried to forget about this day for a while, but now that it was here, the thoughts of the day I got injured came flooding back, reminding me of the trauma and the pain I was going through which was stopping me from doing what I loved with my teammates and my sister.

Y/N wrapped her arm around my shoulders and held me close, letting my cry into her chest. She knew how much this whole situation had affected me, and although I had told her to focus on herself and how incredible the world cup journey was going to be, she still spent so much time looking after me and doing everything she could to support me. I truly was going to miss her, more than I could explain.
