Future of an Immortal part 19

I heard up to the sound of some angry birds chirping away at each other. I groaned, not wanting to wake up, but I forced my eyes open anyway. I was momentarily blinded by the sun which was higher in the sky than I thought it would be.

Slamming my eyes closed from the sun I slowly opened my eyes to see a sleeping Garrett not three inches from my face.

Muffling a shout, I scrambled to my feet in shock that if I had moved any closer to him... I shook off the thought before I got any further with it.

I stood there staring at the sleeping Garrett and noticed that when his blond hair was swept to the side of his face, and he looked more like a sleeping angel than the lively boy I had seen at first. This revelation was shattered when he snored so loud I jumped wondering if the helicopter's had come again.

I lightly chuckled when he started murmuring incoherent gibberish, at least until I started hearing my name. I couldn't help but tiptoe forward to try and hear better. He began saying a name that seemed vaguely familiar...

"Mess... messenger project..." He mumbled. I didn't know how to react to someone talking in his sleep. It felt like I was intruding on his thoughts, but I couldn't bring myself to pull away. I noticed how troubled he looked, almost as if he was having a bad dream.

I bent and kneeled down to his level so I could hear better. It's not like I wanted to pry, I just couldn't help but try and find out why he had said my name, and then the "Messenger Project."

The name sounded familiar, but I couldn't put my finger on it as to where I had heard it before. I heard him start to mumble again and I listened closer. Something seemed off about the way he said my name.

"Mmm... heaven... came..."

I was utterly confused as to what this had to do with me, but then I realized that this was a dream and he could be thinking of anything.

I knew I dreamed about heaven sometimes, wondering what it might be like, or even if such a sweet paradise existed. It's hard to believe when you live in this world for so long.

I smiled to myself wondering why I had gotten myself so worked up about a dream. Of course he would dream about me, I'm the only one out here with him, and probably the only one who hasn't given orders to him, and he might just be dreaming of some paradise somewhere that's totally unrelated.

I let out a sigh before catching my breath again as he said my brother's name.

"Derek... wait.. but Ade..." The last part sounded like the beginning of my name which made my heart skip a beat.

I ran through the reasons in my head of why he would say my brother's name, but couldn't find any possible explanation.

I didn't know whether I should ask him about the dream when he woke up or to just leave it alone. Then I decided there was no way I could just leave it be, or I would spontaniously combust from the curiousity.

The possiblility of him knowing something about my brother was unbeleivable and almost... frightening.

If he didn't tell me about my own brother, what else is he not telling me about?

I kneeled down and couldn't hep but just to stare at him and truly wonder if this boy was another out to get me. Staring at his boyish face, I couldn't beleive that he could be against me, but I knew better than to trust looks.

I almost wanted to leave him in the desert, but then there was a moment where I stopped to consider my options. If he was part of some organisation to get me, I should leave; but if he was just an innocent guy, I would be ditching him in the middle of the desert with no idea how to survive. I decided to take my chances and stay just in case, but the first sign of betrayal and I was outta there.

For some reason, he decided to open his eyes at that moment, catching me looking at him while he was sleeping.

Jumping up, I tripped on some snake hole and fell backwards into a dead bush. I scrambled up from my throne of pointy branches, completely scraped up and embarrassed to even look at Garrett's expression.

I brushed off my jeans of dirt and loose twigs and tried as much as i could to compose myself before daring to look up.

There was a split second where his eyes looked worried, but then seemed to get a more amused twinkle to it. He grinned and asked me if I needed to be checked for coordination problems. I glared at him, but broke into a small smile when he used the puppy dog face as an apology. As I was laughing, I could't help but wonder why I was doing it. I hadn't laughed at all when I was with Sara before I had to leave.

"So, what do you want for breakfast?" he asked while I was still deep in thought. He started shifting his foot from left to right, like he was about to chase, track and kill after whatever I wanted to eat.

I chuckled to myself and said, "Anything you can find is fine. Maybe we can hunt for some more rats or something."

He chuckled and grabbed his shoelaces from his shoe and said, "Let's go."

I rolled my eyes as he went off to find a good spot to set some traps, but I knew he would need my help when he started tying the string to a rock. I let him sit there for a while trying to make the traps like I did, at least until he gave up and asked for help.

I leaned down and tied the shoelace to a twig and used a bit of a rat's tail we cooked from the night before to tie it to the other end. I picked up a large rock and held it a few inches above the ground with the stick, so when some unsuspecting rat came by to nibble and be all cannibal, he would get a face full of rock.

Proud of my work, I got up and tried to coax the fire back to life so we can cook something if we do catch it.

I knew that it would be a long day, but I knew it was gonna be complicated one when I saw a few shapes begin to emerge from the distance and I smiled the widest grin when I recognized the four figures.
