Percy's PoV (12 years old - Yancy Academy)

I flop down onto my bed, exhausted from today. Why do we have to go to school? Why are we forced to study such utterly boring and useless things? No one enjoys it, even the teachers don't! I just want to escape this annoying life, no one even cares about me anyway.

There's a tapping sound on my window, I look up.

A small Yelp escapes my mouth as I tumble off of the bed, tripping over the blankets while trying to crawl away from THAT thing.

It looks like a sort of cat hybrid, as if a human and a cat had a kid. It is chubby, with brown splotches on it's white skin. It stood up-right on two legs, dressed in a purple robe with a red scarf, a yellow jacket onto to finish it off.

"Hello!" They cheerfully chirp, "I can sense that you wanted to escape your life? Perhaps we can make an offer?"

I hesitant, not knowing what to do. Should I trust the cat? Should I call for help? I admit, my next decision probably isn't my smartest, but hey, most of them aren't.

I get up from my awkward crab walk sitting position, climbing onto my bed and opening the window. The creature hops through it, jumping onto my bed. I sit cross-legged on it, facing him.

"So, you wanna make a deal?" I ask, the strange cat nods their head.

"Oh yes, I can help you escape this life of yours, and in return, I get your lifespan!" He explains, it seems easy enough. "But first, young child, may I ask just why you are trying to get away from your life?"

I sigh, looking down at my feet. "My dad was lost at sea, leaving my mother and I alone. She remarried this horrible guy, Smelly Gabe, who threatens us everyday. My mom has been sending me off to boarding schools as soon as I was old enough, and I barely have time to see her. I can't focus, I suck at school. My ADHD gets the best of me, my dyslexia, not cool. I'm failing so bad at everything, school, life, you name it." I slump onto the wall, a downcast look on my face.

"Well, it seems like I do have the perfect thing for you," The cat says, smiling. They hand me a mask, which has cat ears and whiskers on it.

"It's a cat mask." I deadpan. They just chuckle, getting ready to hop out of the window.

"I'll see you soon, young child. When you are ready to escape your gloomy little life of yours, put on the mask and do a somersault." He says. "Or roll over, whichever is easier." He adds, then hops out of my room, disappearing over roof tops.

I close the window, then look back at the mask. Could I really run away from all of my problems, just like that?

Suddenly, the door opens and in steps Grover. "Hey Perce, I'm back-woah, nice mask you got there!"

I quickly stuff the mask into my suitcase, then zip it up. "It's nothing, just something I found. Now, can you tell me what these algebra equations are? I can't read them."

——Time skip——

It's been a week since I'd seen that creepy cat guy. A week since I got the mask.

I stare at it as I sit on my bed, having just completed another unbearable day at school. Maybe I should try it on, just for one second?

I ever so slowly pull it up, towards my face. I push it onto my face, holding it there with one hand, then using my other hand to push me off of my bed, resulting in my rolling off of my bed.

"Ow..."

Nothing's changed...I'm just a bit more banged up then usually. I sigh, about to get up when a pink cloud of dust appears out of nowhere and clouds my vision. I feel my body changing, I feel lighter, more energetic, stronger.
