Kansas looked around at her clean room. She ran to her desk and grabbed her school bag and dumped her books on the ground. She quickly ran around her room grabbing things like extra clothes and candles. She considered bringing books but knew it would only slow her down. She sat down at her desk and grabbed a piece of paper and a quill. She wrote a note for her family on it.

Dear Mother and Father,

I have to leave home and I'm not sure when I'll come back.. I am safe and fine and I don't know if you have read many fantasy books so this may come as a surprise to you but adventures are very hard and scary and long and sometimes people don't come back

Kansas crumpled the paper and started again,

Dear Mother and Father,

You most likely will be surprised to see me missing and will find this note crying. I'm crying too as I write this note. I have to leave and I'm not sure when I will come back. Just know I love you with all my heart and I hate leaving you. I will be fine and am leaving for an important reason. I love you and Marcus so much it is unbearable. Good bye, Kansas.

Kansas stopped for a second to read what she had written. Her heart ached from the thought of leaving her parents and brothers behind. She looked out her window remembering Cobalt, the merchants, and everything. She could see the smoke still and it only reminded her of the importance of getting to Jonah. This was her home and she was not letting it crumble. Kansas sneaked down the stairs being extra quiet and packed food, water, and other necessities that she thought she needed that would be easy for travel. She also packed things she knew her family could replace. She packed and then she headed to the door. Once she opened it she heard a voice saying,

"Where do you think you are going?" Kansas spun around to see a young man standing behind her.

"I um..." Kansas muttered to Byron but couldn't think of an excuse. Instead of calling their father, he hugged Kansas so tight she thought she might pop.

"What was that for?" Kansas questioned.

"I know what you are doing." He said and sighed

"You are looking for a replacement for me." Kansas was so shocked that she said

"WHY WOULD I DO THAT?!" But Byron quickly shushed her.

"Mother and Father have gone upstairs to sleep but I don't want to take any chances." She nodded and whispered

"Byron, I would never do that! Even if you destroyed the world I would still love you and don't you forget!" She grabbed her brother's hand and smiled.

"All right but now will you tell me what you are doing so I don't freak out when you bring back Byron 2.0." Byron joked but saw the look on her face when he said that so quickly added,

"Can I come?" Kansas sighed and shook her head,

"No Byron, you can't. Where I am going will be dangerous, scary, and possibly might kill me. And if I die and you die then our parents will have a broken heart and that would just be terrible." Kansas said. Byron stood tall and replied,

"Then you'll need backup." Kansas looked at her brother sternly.

"I'm being serious." She said,

"Well so am I!" He replied strongly.

"No Byron, I am not risking your life," Kansas said, wiping away her tears

"If you die then I will never forgive myself."

"Ok then tell me." He said.

"Fine. I am going to the Siren Forest to meet a boy that said I can help save the world." Kansas said
