🌻

Ever since he was little, Gulf had longed for certain moments, a mother who would show up at school, all dressed up for Parents Visiting Day, a mother with an umbrella in hand, who would pick him up from school on days when it would start to rain suddenly, a mother who would call out, "It's getting late, time to come home!" or "Time for dinner, come inside!" when he'd play outside with his friends.

Ordinary moments between a mother and son.

But no matter how much Gulf had longed for those moments, he could never have them.

Even if there had been pouring rain or blizzard outside, Gulf's mother had never picked him up from school. Some kind of work had always come up suddenly, so she had never even been able to come in Parent's Visiting Day, or any sports meets he had looked forward to.

But even as a child, Gulf had understood that his parents were both busy and didn't have much free time to spend with him. However, he had never once doubted their love for him. So he had never been selfish enough to say things like, "Come to Parents Visiting Day!" or "Bring an umbrella and pick me up from school on rainy days!"

On Parents Visiting Day, he had tolerated it when his parents couldn't come, and on rainy days, he had used an umbrella from school. Gulf had been a very obedient kid, and had been very good at coming home right before darkness fell whenever he played outside. In other words, he had been a good, obedient child who didn't have to be told to behave.

But still, there were some things he couldn't get used to.

When he had played over at friends' houses, their moms would bake cakes for them, and if it got too late, they would drive him home. Gulf had thought it must be nice to have a mom who was always home to take care of her kids and to bake things for them.

But in reality, his parents had been too busy trying to pay off the loan on their new house. His parents had wanted to build the house so Gulf could have his own room, so there had been no way he could complain.

Eventually, even though he was still a child, Gulf had begun to accept that his friends' families had their own way of living, and his family had theirs. There were plenty of other kids like him, and there would always be people better off than him. He had decided he would just count his blessings.
