You were never one to cower in fear from the mere sounds of thunder, but you certainly didn't find it to be a desirable contribution to your night's sleep. Despite your drawn curtains, the pitter-patter of heavy rain against your window was loud enough for your mind to conjure up a vivid visualization of the storm taking place outside.

You tried covering your ears with your hands, and then a pair of pillows, but neither seemed to block out the unsettling noise of the storm. Letting out a defeated sigh, you laid your back flat against the bed. You allowed your body to slowly sink into the soft mattress, silently savoring the marshmallow-like texture.

You let your eyes fall shut, hoping that the action would prompt you to gradually drift off into sleep's sweet embrace, but another deafening clap of thunder sent your eyes flying open and you nearly jumping out of bed.

With a frustrated groan, you slammed a clenched fist angrily down on a pillow. All you wanted was a good night's sleep so you wouldn't end up as a brain-dead zombie the next day at work. Was that too much to ask?!

After you spent god knew how long tossing and turning in bed, you finally gave up and surrendered to the storm, reaching for your phone on the nightstand next to you. A sigh escaped your lips when you saw the time on your screen once you unlocked the device.

2:41 a.m.

Just when you were on the verge of screaming and crying out in exasperation and potentially waking up your neighbors, a thought crossed your mind. Biting down on your bottom lip, you scrolled through your list of contacts, searching for the only person who you knew would be awake at this ungodly hour.

Your finger hovered over the contact for a moment, hesitating, before swiftly pressing down on the 'call' button. You brought the phone next to your ear and waited for the recipient to pick up.

Once it reached the sixth ring, you began to doubt your earlier thought and were sure that the person was actually already asleep. However, right when you were about to end the call, they picked up.

"What do I owe the pleasure of receiving a call from a lovely lady such as yourself at this odd hour, (F/ N)-chan?" the familiar male voice spoke in a playful tone.

You couldn't help but roll your eyes. "I can't sleep, Dazai."

"Ah, and here I thought it was because you missed hearing my beautiful voice." Dazai sighed. "Oh, there are no words to describe the utter disappointment that fills my heart at this moment."

You paused for a moment at his overdramatic response, and then said, "Now I'm starting to think that it might've actually been a terrible idea calling you."

The male's chuckle sent your heart fluttering, and your body couldn't help but melt into the soft, familiar sound that was reminiscent of blue skies and sunny mornings.

"Well, normally I'd argue against that, but the day has drained me dry and I honestly don't think I have any advice that would help with your dilemma right now." Dazai said, his voice carrying a hint of weariness.

"Been a tough day at the agency today?" you asked.

"One of the toughest." he confirmed.

Taking in a deep breath, you closed your eyes. "Sorry to hear about that."

"No worries. Sorry that I can't help you with your problem." he replied softly.

"It's fine." you released another sigh. "Let's just talk, okay?"

There was a slight pause, and for a second, you were genuinely worried that he might reject your request.

"Alright." his voice came out almost in a whisper. So light. So delicate. Your heart clenched.

"Thank you." you murmured. "I just needed someone to help me get through the night."

You could practically hear the smile in his voice as he replied, "Now you've called the right man. What stories do you have in store for me tonight, (F/ N)-chan?"

A smile made its way onto your lips at his words, and the terrifying storm wreaking havoc outside was completely forgotten.

For the rest of the night, you and Dazai were sharing stories about your day, which led to conversations on various topics to just going on about a bunch of nonsense as drowsiness began setting in.

You both eventually fell asleep with your phones next to you, a smile on your faces, and the reassurance of each other's company on your minds.
