Parting ways with Arianna after the events of the first book, Velvet goes on to seek out Fumina's granddaughter, Mizumi Fanalis, in order to further her water magic. But once she finds the timid elf things soon take a turn for the worse as her home village is raided by a group of slave hunters. Velvet takes it upon herself to find the missing elven children that were so heartlessly ripped away from their parents and Mizumi offers to aid her on this mission. It doesn't take long for them to realize that there is much more at stake here than just the lives of the stolen children. There are things happening in the shadows that not even the Council of Mages is aware of and if they don't do something, there could be a repeat of the great racial war that Rumerra is still recovering from. To make matters worse, they cross paths with one of Velvet's old enemies. Meanwhile, Arianna gets an unexpected visit back at Everdale Academy and is warned that Velvet's life could be in danger if she keeps sticking her nose into things far greater than she is. Not long after, she receives a letter from Velvet confirming that she is doing exactly that. Arianna isn't going to idly stand by while her friend is out there, meddling with things that could potentially get her killed. Determined, she sets out on a rescue mission, employing the help of an old friend from the Kamatayan forest.
