A/N: Third update for this week! The November rush is in full swing!

LORELEI

YOU WOULD not believe what I saw. Everyone would laugh at me. They would think that I was joking, I was lying or I was out of my mind.

And I understand why people would react that way. Because no one would expect it. No one would see it coming. It's like telling people that the sun has begun revolving around the earth. It's impossible. It's laughable.

It's already five-thirty in the afternoon when I came home. The sight that welcomed my eyes caught me by surprise. The place was sparkling clean.

They almost formed a straight line. The trash bin was also empty.

The place was messy. Well, we did not have time to clean everything or anything. Nakakapaglinis lang ako kapag nakauwi na ako.

For a moment, I thought Tita Martha did all of these. But I remember she doesn't clean our unit. She's the landlady here. She'd let me clean our unit on my own.

Could it be Tita Frigette? But she never touched any of the items here.

So that left only person who might be behind this strange cleanliness: Loki himself.

And that sounded outrageous. Imagine him washing the dishes? Imagine him sweeping and mopping the floor? It's unimaginable. It could only happen in one's dreams.

"Oh, you're here?" Loki leaned against his room door, arms folded.

I turned to him and wagged my forefinger. "Did you..."

He nodded. Ayaw kong maniwala noong una. I was expecting a punchline or a "just kidding!" remark, but it didn't come out of his mouth. "I needed a distraction so I decided to clean the unit. I surprisingly found the activity liberating. It clears my mind. Like a palate cleanser. Is that why you enjoy it? Don't worry, I didn't clean your room. I respect your privacy and I do not want to mess with your girly stuff."

He's right. It's like a palate cleanser after tasting a food. Writer's block, I guess? I sometimes fail to find the right words to use to perfectly describe the situation.

What caught my interest in his response was one word. Distraction, huh? I guess this was one of his ways in coping with Maggie's death. He's keeping himself busy. He's trying other things so his mind would wander elsewhere. I'm not complaining though. Aside from it might help him feel better, mas mabuti nang matuto siyang maglinis para hindi lang ako ang kumikilos sa apartment.

"You seem surprised." He squinted his eyes at me. "You don't expect me to know how to clean? What am I, a first grader?"

"Let me correct your number one misconception about me," he said, raising his forefinger. "I know how to clean. I just don't act on it. There are so many things I have to accomplish. Cleaning is at the bottom of my list."

He's acting strange recently, but so far, I'm liking it.

After changing my clothes, lumabas ako ng aking room at bumalik sa malinis naming sala. I felt like I had to emphasize the state of our living room in appreciation of his efforts. I found him there, comfortably seated on the couch.

"Jamie insists that we hold a video call conference. With the four of us," he told me as soon as I settled down. "She wants to know what's the latest about your possible dad. She can't wait until tomorrow."

I scratched her chin gently, careful not to wake her up. She stretched her feet and bared her claws. Mukhang masarap ang tulog niya.

"Fine." I sighed.

On screen were three medium-sized frames where our faces could be seen. Loki and I shared the same frame. I thought of opening my phone and joining the call separately, but wouldn't that be weird?

I recognized the frames on her background because I've been in their house.

I snickered. What a lame joke, pero nagawa pa rin niya akong mapangiti.

"Parang hindi tayo nagkita-kita kanina, ah?" I said. Thanks to the fast internet connection, may lag sa video at may delay sa audio. Parang tanga kaming nagtitinginan at naghihintay na may magsalita.

"Teka lang, huwag muna tayong mag-i-start! Ire-record ko 'tong video call natin for the memories!" sabi niya sabay pindot sa isang button. I noticed her finger dramatically pressing a key. "Hayan! Pwede na tayong mag-chika-han! You know what? We should do this more often. We must take advantage of technology!

We prefer to chat most of the time. Laging kumustahan, puro good morning o good evening. Sharing ng kung ano ang ginagawa namin. Payabangan ng ulam at merienda. Mostly si Jamie ang may pasimuno noon. Nakikisakay naman kaming dalawa ni Alistair. Loki wouldn't bother checking it. Even if he did, nagsi-seen lang siya.

"How's your trip with Sir Rivera?" tanong ni Alistair.

She gave me a thumbs up. We don't want those rumors going around, right?

I moved a few inches to my right para medyo lumayo ako kay Loki. I froze with an awkward smile, waiting if it's okay to move again.

"Now back to the chika. Kumusta ang father-daughter bonding n'yo kanina? Did he finally say the magic words 'Lorelei, I am your father' in a deep voice?"

"Nothing's confirmed yet—"

Jamie groaned.

She's treating this issue like a showbiz item, which would have offended me since this is a serious matter to my being. Pero hinayaan ko na lang siya. Jamie's being Jamie. What else should I expect from her?

Anyway, I don't want to think too much about it at the moment.

"I did confirm a few things from him," I began, clearing my throat. Jamie leaned forward while Alistair reclined in his seat. "First, he admitted that he's the writer of The Serenade of the Siren. I thought he'd be lying, but he didn't. Hindi na niya ako pinahirapan pa. He confirmed what we already knew."

"The anagram is already a dead giveaway," Loki commented. "He's a fool if he thinks he could find his way out of that one. He must not dare to underestimate a member of the QED Club."

Well, he deserves all the credit. I only relayed his suspicions to the person and had it confirmed.

"Next, he sounded like he didn't know that my mom died already," I went on, looking down. "Maingat siya sa pagsasalita niya. I thought his tongue would slip and give me an obvious hint that we might be right about him."

"That's not surprising," Alistair said. "He's a writer after all. He has a way with words. He'd be weighing everything that comes out of his mouth."

"He could be pretending not to know about my mom," I agreed. That's totally understandable especially if he doesn't want to drop the act yet. "Third, the publishing deal is legit. The man's name is Johannes Gutierrez."

"Hold on a minute." Alistair leaned closer to the screen and his fingers flew over the bottom. He must be typing something. Does he look like this?"

I leaned forward and waited for the image to fully load.

"That's him." "He called Sir Rich by the nickname Fritz when they shook hands."

"Fritz?" Alistair repeated.

"'Di ba pambabaeng pangalan 'yon?" komento ni Jamie.

"Short for Friedrich?" Loki muttered.

"Here's where things got weird." I took in a long breath.

"OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD!" singit ni Jamie sabay paypay sa sarili niya. She looked like she's feeling warm over there or she ate a spicy food. "Magkikita na ba ang dalawang daddy mo? What a coincidence!

I rolled my eyes. She made it sound like a love team war. "They were a few meters apart, but they didn't see each other face to face.

I waited for him to say something. "How's tito pala? It's been a while since you two met, right?"

Bumuntong-hininga ako. "Mukhang hindi siya gano'n ka-okay. He felt a pain near his liver when we were on my way home. You know, where he was shot by that assassin. He told me na galing siya sa isang business trip at dumiretso rito. But his driver said that he came directly out of the hospital."

"Why would he lie to you?" Alistair asked.

I shrugged. That's the same question I had in mind. "Maybe he doesn't want me to worry about his health? I don't know? He's the type of person who doesn't want to inconvenience other people. But I might be able to know more about his condition. He'd be staying in this city for a few days. He even invited me to lunch or dinner."

"Parang may contest ngayon na who's the better dad? For now, I'm with Team Walter."

If Alistair's theory was correct, we'd have a clear idea on who's absolutely the worse between the two.

Wait a minute. How appropriate. If Sir Rich is my dad and the third party in our fight against M, he's also the third party in my mom and dad Walter's relationship. Was it a coincidence that we coined that term to refer to him? Wait, was it us or was it Stein? Well, it doesn't matter.

"Our turn to report," Loki spoke, snapping my consciousness back to reality. I guess this was part of his change?

"What's this?"

"The files that Friedrich submitted to the human resources department of Clark High," Loki answered, sitting cross-legged again. "Aside from his resume, you'd see his medical records there, which I believe would interest you."

I read nothing but the personal details of a man named Friedrich Rivera.

"Well..." Loki tilted his head to one side, his voice trailed off as he looked away.

He would normally brag about his method and defend it fiercely to me, pero nahihiya yata siya ngayon.

"Loki broke into the HRD office," Alistair explained. "I was totally against the idea, but he insisted na kailangan na nating makakuha agad ng dagdag na detalye tungkol kay Sir Rivera."

"He later on agreed with my plan and stood guard outside the office," Loki added, motioning to Alistair's frame. "Therefore he's complicit in the break in. If you're gonna scold me, you should scold him too. We're equally guilty."

I simply shook my head. Well, he did it with the best intention in mind so I'd let this pass. I would have probably agreed as well since I'm curious about Sir Rich.

"What should I be looking here?"

"The blood type," Loki said, pointing at the middle of the document.

"Remember when your dad got shot?" Alistair spoke while I was reading the file. "His blood type is O. Your mother is A. There's no way they could have produced an AB like you. The laws of human genetics tells us that your father must be—"

"—Type B," I finished as I saw the letter. Iniangat ko ang aking tingin sa screen. "Sir Rich is B. My mom's A. I'm an AB. It's starting to make sense."

"So can we say with confidence na si Sir Rivera ang daddy niya?" tanong ni Jamie. "The clues point to that conclusion, right? His special treatment of Lorelei, the publishing deal, the anagram, and now the blood type. Ano pa bang kulang?"

I get why she thought that way, but none of what she enumerated was conclusive.

Loki shook his head, just as I expected. "Friedrich is not the only person in the world whose blood type is B. But this latest discovery strongly supports the theory that he's related with Lorelei. Now by blood."

It's still too early to make that call.

"The DNA test is still the best way to determine if he's your dad," Alistair said. "Or if he's in any way related to you."

She sounded impatient.

"Again, he'd deflect the question or lie to me," I reminded her.

As Alistair said, Sir Rich has a way with words.

"We need to get a DNA sample discreetly," Loki said. He seemed dead set on pursuing that option. "The best is blood sample."

"May ginagamit namang suklay si Sir Rivera, 'no?

"That depends if the hair strands stuck in the comb have follicles. The shaft of the hair won't do," Loki answered. "Hair follicles contain cellular material rich in DNA. That's the best way the lab can properly analyze the genetic material and compare it with Lorelei's. Without it, the test may not be successful."

"How about saliva?" sunod na tanong ni Jamie.

"Foreign DNA can contaminate the saliva sample and may not yield an accurate result."

"So blood it is!" Jamie gave in, throwing her hands up in the air. "The question is: Paano kayo makakukuha ng dugo mula sa kanya?"

"I have a brilliant yet tricky suggestion." Loki raised his hand as if he's reciting in class. "What if Alistair punches Friedrich in the face so hard that the latter's lips would bleed? Lorelei will step in and wipe the blood off his lips."

My eyes narrowed into slits as I turned to him. Walang problema kung mamamagitan ako. Sanay na akong mag-step in kapag may nag-aaway. Remember what I did to him and his brother? That was outright violence. Loki wanted him to assault a high school teacher.

"Assuming that I agree with your plan, why would I punch him in the face?" Alistair asked. Same question here. What will push me to do him harm?"

"Honestly that's out of character for Al," I seconded. "He won't use his strength to hurt anyone."

"Well..." Loki tilted his head to one side, looking up. "He could be frustrated with the possibility that Friedrich is the third party. The punch can be an act of justice and revenge for Augustus and Sir Ephraim. He's into that sort of heroic thing, isn't he?"

Justice? Possibly. Vengeance? I don't think so.

"That's not gonna work." I shook my head. We don't want him expelled, do we?"

"Do you have a better suggestion?" Loki asked.

"Hold on!" Jamie raised her hands, making us turn to her and almost freeze on the frame.

"WHAT?!" nakamulagat kong tanong. Was she out of her mind? Do I look like someone who would resort to violence?

"Look!" Mapapalampas niya. I'm not saying na susuntukin mo siya. I don't know which one's better. Baka may maisip kayong mas creative."

"Much better than my idea." Loki nodded. "Just say sorry, smile at him, and you will be forgiven in an instant. I doubt he'd bring you to the principal's office for accidentally hurting him."

"But is Lori up for it?" tanong ni Alistair sabay tingin direkta sa screen.

I shut my eyes for a moment and took a deep breath. Am I up for it? Of course, I am. "I'll do it. May ibang choice pa ba tayo?"

"Go, Lori! Go, Lori!" Jamie cheered.

"Let's get this done tomorrow so we'll have the result as soon as possible."

We bade goodbye to one another and ended the video call. Loki slapped his laptop close as he stood. I can't wait to solve this mystery para makahinga na ako nang maluwag.

"By the way, may I borrow the books that Friedrich gave you?" he asked as he retreated a step and turned to me. "The other two."

"Why? You planning to read them all and look for more clues?"

Umiling siya. "I need his fingerprints. He touched those books with his bare fingers, didn't he?"

I nodded. He was not wearing any gloves when he handed them over. If he did, I would have found him suspicious.

"You do know that my dad's bodyguards are former NBI agents, right?" he asked. "We can ask them to run Friedrich's fingerprints and see if he had any criminal record. If he's your dad, we need to know if he has other skeletons in his closet. Will that be okay with you?"

Muli akong tumango sa kanya. Wala namang mawawala, 'di ba? Running a background check on someone who might be my biological father could be a good idea.

"Thank you." He nodded as he faced the direction of his room.

There's still something else on my mind.

"How are you doing so far?" I asked.

He halted and turned around to face me again. It might be the elephant in the room, but it had to be addressed. Lalo na ngayong may nakikita akong pagbabago sa kanya. This wasn't the usual him.

"I'm trying my best to feel better. Do I have any choice at all?" he replied with a wry smile. "How about you? What would you feel if Friedrich turns out to be your biological father and a bad person?"

My eyes blinked as I looked away. That's the elephant in the room for me. I don't want to confront that possibility at the moment. I wanted to cross the bridge when I get there. But one thing's for certain.

"I'll try my best to feel better." I forced a smile, stretching my lips as wide as I could. "I don't have any choice at all, do I?"

His gaze lingered at me for another second or two before he went straight to his room.

Indeed, what would I feel if Sir Rich turns out to be my biological father and a bad person?

Speaking of father. I quickly drew my phone and dialed my dad Walter's number. He's been on my mind. Thanks to that video call, pansamantalang nawala ang kaba ko para sa kanya. I was distracted. But it's coming back again.

He should have been wherever he's staying. Saan nga ba siya ngayon? Wala kasi siyang nabanggit sa akin.

"Hi, dad?"

"Hello, Lorelei. Is there anything I can help you with?"

I bit my nails as I walked around the center table. Hearing his voice calmed me down slightly. "Nothing. Just want to check on you. Are you feeling better now? Saan kayo mag-i-stay ngayong gabi?"

"I already drank some painkillers so I'm feeling well. Don't worry too much about me. I'm in my hotel room right now, taking some rest. Just as you suggested."

"I'm glad to hear that." Nakahinga ako nang maluwag, pero hindi tuluyan. Parang may pumigil sa akin.

"About the dinner that I'm planning for the two of us, I will send you the details tomorrow. I will have Nancy arrange the reservation in that well-reviewed restaurant tonight."

"Sure, dad." I smiled, inhaling and exhaling deeply. "'Yon lang ho kaya ko kayo tinawagan. Please take care of yourself."

"Take of yourself too."

"Thank you for your concern, Lorelei. I very much appreciate it."

With one click, I hung up the call.

My dad Walter isn't the only one taking a step in the right direction. I am too. Whatever I learn in the coming days, he's still my dad. No one and nothing could change that fact.
