I sniff and move my arm from around the Prince to wipe my eyes. The Prince wakes up at my movement "sorry didn't mean to wake you" I apologise thickly. "What's the matter? Did you have a bad dream?" he asks concerned "no, it was a beautiful dream. These are happy tears" I assure him. He reaches up and kisses me. I hug him tight and he runs his tongue over my bottom lip asking for entry. I don't hesitate I open and we deepen the kiss. He pushes me onto my back still kissing me, my robe opens fully. "Your Majesty, the King has sent you a letter and some gifts" I hear Ri-na call I wake up and look around, it seems to be a cloudy day as the light isn't very strong. As I sit up and stretch the kinks out my stomach rumbles. "Bring some food Ri-na" I call as I put my robe on. I go through to the connecting room and notice the commode is not there. "Ri-na where is the commode?" I ask. She opens the door and walks in with a letter on a tray, more servants come in all holding trays with all sorts on them from beautiful coloured silks to green jade dragons. "The commode is now through that door your Majesty" she bows and then indicates the door that I hadn't noticed before. "There is also a small burner in there to heat the water for washing. The Prince is so clever thinking of it" she states before taking the food from another servant and placing it on the table in front of me. "Thank you, you can leave" I smile at her comment as everyone puts down their trays, bows and leaves. I open the letter and read while I have some bread and honey. 'Just a small thank you for your help, a truly pleasurable night was enjoyed' I read and nearly choke on the bread I'm chewing. I take a sip of water as I read on, 'please share any other tips with Consort Bin.' I blush thinking of last night, I look at all the gifts a silver babies rattle catches my eye. "Un" I call "yes, your Majesty" he appears near the corner. "Did I tell you that Keon-hi is possibly 3 maybe 4 years older than we first thought?" I ask him. He coughs "what? How is that possible?" he wonders. "Well she was four when her mother died. She then learnt to count from the crooked head servant, he would count out their money missing out 5 and 8. Also she thinks she might have forgotten her birthday the first few years after her mother's death. She really started to celebrate them again when Chang-wo came to work there 4 years ago. We will know better once she has gotten proper meals and her monthly bleeding happens. I haven't seen her for a couple of days?" I finish. "She hasn't been feeling well" Un tells me. I get dressed quickly and comb my hair putting it up simply, I push my feet into my shoes and grab some lavender oil on my way back out to the garden. Un is waiting for me and I follow him back to his quarters. I go in and find Keon-hi rolled in a ball on the bed "are you alright, I've only just been told your not feeling well?" She moves her head to look at me "no, my tummy really hurts" she tells me. "I'm going to need you to lay on your back and straighten your legs" I instruct her. She does as I ask "I'm going to press on your tummy, you tell me where it hurts the most?" She nods and I push her right side, she shakes her head. "Good not your appendix then" I push just under her ribs and she shakes her head again. "it's here" she runs her hand over her lower stomach just above her pubic bone. I push gently and she groans in pain "are you bleeding down there?" I ask she shakes her head. "I think we need to get you up and moving. I think your bleeding may have started but you have a clot, which is causing all this pain. Once you get up moving it will move and your discomfort will reduce. "Un can you please have them heat some cloths please and have them bring a hand warmer with some hot coals in it please" I call I hear his footsteps fade away. "Right let me help you up, it is going to feel very uncomfortable and the pain may worsen before it gets better" I warn her. She nods and lets me help her up. I notice a blood stain on her bedding and turn her around, "it's not worth changing yet, as you will make another mess in a bit" she nods and turns her head away from the stain. "Don't worry I'll have someone change it" I wrap a skirt around her under pants hiding the blood stain. "Let's go and walk around the garden" I hold onto her arm supporting her a little as we walk around the garden. "Do you want to hear a funny story to take your mind off the discomfort?" Keon-hi smiles a little "yes please." I think for a moment "the King came to see me yesterday, he said he had heard about my archery skills and my knife throwing and wanted to see it for himself. I found out that was just an excuse though. The Prince had been a little to honest about our bedroom compatibility and how much he was enjoying married life. The King is enjoying his time with Consort Bin, but he wanted my help to give her tips on how they too could enjoy their bedroom time. He was so eager he took me there after asking for my help. What did she tell you?" Keon-hi prompts. I see Un with the hand warmer and sit Keon-hi on a bench while I run back and take it off him. "Can you ask the servants to change the bed and have cloth's ready for monthly bleeding please" I whisper Un looks very shocked "yes I think she is more likely to be near 14 to 15. Her body is changing shape rapidly too" I let him know. He nods and then stumbles back into the room. Poor thing, I think as I take the hand warmer to Keon-hi. Hold this to your tummy it will really help with the discomfort. She does that and we begin to walk again, "well?" she says. "Oh yes, where was I?" I ask "you were shocked to your core" Keon-hi helps. I smile and then carry on with my story. "Yes, shocked to my core. If I tell you this you can not repeat it to anyone, in fact best forget you heard it all together" I warn "yes, yes, what was it?" she demands gripping my arm. I lean in and whisper "she told me that when she and the King, carried out their bedroom activities she didn't take off her clothes. To say you could have slapped me with a fish is an understatement. How has the King had, any children?" I wonder out loud then cover my mouth and look around. "What did you say to her?" I look around again before saying "I told her to get herself and the King naked" I whisper. "Naked" Keon-hi shouts "shhh!" I say putting a finger to my mouth and looking around again. "Yes, naked. Only she looked shocked and asked how she was meant to do that? So, I had to think of away for her to do just that. I can tell you it was embarrassing, I had to tell her that the Prince and I sleep naked wrapped in each other's arms every night" I explain. "You do, really?" I throw my hands up in the air "now I've just told you too. The whole palace is going to know soon, then I'll have the doctors telling me I'm not to participate in servicing the Prince until after the baby is born. What the hell do they know? It actually helps the baby and your body in creating the ideal conditions to have a baby and keep it safe. Do you think they will believe me? No, they won't and all the ministers will start talking about getting concubines and I'll have to fight the urge to stab them all" I throw my hands back up in the air again. "They know nothing! Women have urges and needs too? They believe the world revolves around them really? They wouldn't even be here if it wasn't for women giving birth to the arrogant little snots" I rant. Keon-hi burst out laughing and tightens her arm around the hand warmer being held to her stomach. "Did I say something funny?" I ask. "Yes, you did! But I don't think you have to worry about the ministers or the doctors the Prince won't let anyone harm or say anything about you that may upset you. Also, the King is probably really happy now too. He will send you a reward" she finishes. I throw my hands up in the air again "he already has about 10 trays full, with a note asking for me to give Consort Bin more tips. I should just right a book. How to please your man" I wave my hand in the air as I finish. Keon-hi starts to laugh again "it would be a best-read book in Joseon" she laughs holding her stomach again. She straightens up and I see her sway and pale. I catch her around her waist "you just came up to quick, breath just concentrate on your breathing" I try and reassure her. "Your Majesty, I feel something dripping down my thighs and the discomfort is less, the pain too" she tells me. "Here sit on this bench, I'm just going to lift your skirt a little and see if your bleeding" she nods. I lift her skirt and see the red stain forming on her under pants. "There you should feel better now. It would be best if you sat on the commode for a little bit till the bleeding lessons a little. Think of it like someone removing the rocks that was blocking a stream. The water is going to run quickly at first until all the water that was blocked has moved down stream." She nods and I help her stand up and take her back inside, I look for the commode. "They moved it to the room next door and made that door over there so I could use it" she explains I nod. Then walk her to the door "do you need me to come in with you, don't worry if you make a mess. It is quite usual" I reassure her. Look at you, you got up walked around a little and straight away began to feel better. Exercise, nothing to much walking even simple stretching can help. Having a hand warmer prepared and holding it to your stomach can also help. When you go to bed to sleep take some warm cloths and place the hand warmer under them, it will stay warmer longer and create the heat to spread out along your stomach" I explain the best way I know how, while soaking her bloody underpants. "I'm feeling a little light headed" she says. Concern has me walking around the screen and taking her pulse. It is a little fast, but that's all, "does it feel as though it's slowed down now?" I ask. "It's my happy song, all about the hippo's and how they love to wallow in mud to keep them cool" I explain. "Now let's show you how to put your bleeding cloths on. See they have ribbons sewed into the top and bottom end. You put is on under your carriage, then tie the ribbons like so this and your all set until you go to the commode room again. Then change your cloths" she nods and puts the cloths on. "When you first come on it's best if you change them every time you use the commode. After a day or two you can see how it is and then change them accordingly" I wait while she gets dressed. When she joins me back in the sitting room I ask "how are you feeling? Still feel the cramp pain?" She smooth's her skirt down before answering "a little." I tilt my head and look at her "that means your in quite a bit of pain. Take this with water it will help ease the cramps and take away the headache. I will send Ri-na over with some more take them every four hours. Until you feel better." She nods and I can see that her headache is getting worse. "Here come and lay down, I've added new coal to the hand warmer curl up and place it next to your tummy" I instruct. She lays down and lays on her side I tuck the hand warmer up against her tummy. Then take the lavender I've bought and drip a couple of drops on a handkerchief, I also rub some into her temples. "There, call me if you need anything." I leave her to sleep hoping she will feel better when she wakes up. As I walk back towards the gate Un appears "is everything alright?" his concern etched on his face. "Yes, she's just taken a draught for the pain, and is laying down with the hand warmer next to her tummy. Please make sure eats properly at regular intervals. I will send Ri-na over with more pain killer, she might go through some mood swings so give her space. Don't worry Un she will be fine. I think she is closer to 15 it's just that she wasn't fed properly and lived in poor conditions now she is eating properly and living well. Her body is going to speed up the process. She probably won't grow as much as she could have but she is becoming healthier every day. Her monthly bleeding is a sign of that" I pat his twisting hands trying to reassure him. He nods "thank you, she loves you as a sister" he tells me "and I her, she is very dear to me and we will be sister's until our old age when we our great Grandparents" I tell him. He smiles at my words and I start to walk back to my palace again. I feel tired but really want a bath first.
