In no particular order, the winner of October Drabbles are the following authors:
1. VeraLoy : Shoulders hunched against the rain, Dan followed his uncle though the graveyard. The spade's iron handle was already cold and slippery in his grip and he wondered how on earth Jeb thought they were going to get the body out of the grave on a night like this. But Jeb had insisted. "Customer promised a good price for a fresh one!" The two men reached their goal, the newly-turned earth already slick and muddy. "What's that?" hissed Jeb, looking over Dan's shoulder. Dan turned, then something struck him hard on the head. "Sorry, Dan, but the price was too good."
2. KeiraKnox1 : Hector's back ached as he shoveled the dirt away from his wife's grave. He was looking for the golden ring he had given her. Once he found it, he pocketed it and took off. As he was walking back to his house he heard an ear-splitting shriek and a voice: "Who stole my golden ring?" He ran inside his house, shutting and locking the door behind him. There was a creak as the closet door opened and Hector tried to quiet his breathing. "Who stole my golden ring?" The voice was right outside the closet door. "IT WAS YOU!"
3. JadedElegance : The heat clings desperately as Aubrienne flies down the stairs, seeking sanctuary. Jebediah's face is stony, pulling her close. "Shhh. You're safe now." She relaxes, pouring from the brandy snifter she'd pilfered. Grasping a glass, he downs it gratefully. Pleasure is rare. "You're not the only one everyone wants dead, love." Her lips curl up, a bitter taste. "I'm the only one who'd never trade my lover's safety." The sound of footsteps grows heavier. "Aubrienne, you don't think I'd..." "I think it matters little." She slips outside, the sound of glass shattering behind her. Aubrienne adores her garden. Queen Anne's lace withers, but Madame Belladonna reigns supreme.
4. ifangelscouldfly : The First Emperor of China drank the Elixir. It sizzled on the way down his throat, burning away the flesh, leaving him a mummy, thirsting for life. Now, he haunts the halls of a palace he built for his afterlife. Instead at final rest, he prowls in search of human flesh. If you near this palisade, the hills of Xi-An, you'll hear his unearthly howls, begging for your scent to near him so he may attack. And when he mistakes his stone soldiers for human flesh, he tears them to nothing more than bits and pieces of rubble, an arm here, a leg there.
5. rosaimee : Hymns in ancient tongues were sang, inebriated blasphemies. Inside the circle of stoned monoliths above the hill, naked, the witches danced. When darkness engulfed the sacred site, the Druid priestess, sauntered her way to the altar, gilded chalice raised into the air. Dressed in white robes and crowned with flowers, a young maid, was brought to the her, too drunken to walk by herself. Stabbed in her womb, she writhed in pain, her screams died to the frantic cries of the wicked women. A thunder broke to her last breath and the earth quivered, when Samhain arrived for his sacrifice.
6. TheDixieDarlin : It was a gray, muggy evening in the wilderness of Alabama, where they lived. Two sisters were giggling with each other in the yard behind their red wooden house. It was fun to watch Pepper do tricks. Playfully, she danced on her hind legs and barked at nothing... so they thought. High up in the second-story window, a pale silhouette was enjoying the dog's show as well. With a gasp, the youngest girl aimed her tiny phone camera at the ghost. With shivering chills, they played back the recording. Do spirits exist? I have no doubt. I was the oldest sister...
