Third Person POV:
Listening to the seconds tick by in the courtyard, y/n sits by Harry waiting for Hermione and Ron to return from the Halloween Day's Hogsmeade visit. A faint rumble of footsteps grow nearer and y/n stands up. Harry grumbles, shoving his hands in his pockets and joins her lazily. A sudden rush of students returns, excitedly rushing indoors with bright crimson bags of goods from Zonko's and suckers larger than their heads. Y/n points through the crowd to Ron who is wearing one of his maroon Weasley sweaters and raises her arm to wave them over. Ron smiles eagerly and pulls Hermione along by her arm as they rush towards Harry and Y/n.
"How was it, you two?" y/n asks as Hermione and Ron come back smiling with a heard of other students. "Did Hogsmeade treat you well?"
"Oh yes! it was so much fun! Honeydukes is full of all the candy you could ever imagine! It was absolutely...., " Hermione trails off, quickly looking down at the floor as she sees the look on Harry's face. "Oh, I'm so sorry, Harry... I'm sure they'll let you go next time."
"It's fine," Harry says cooly, taking a deep breath to conceal his disappointment. "I'm glad you both had fun. Y/n was good company."
"Thanks, Harry," y/n smiles and shivers in her coat a slight bit. "Let's go back inside. The October air is getting to me."
"Yeah. We have a bit of time until dinner and I have that Transfiguration essay to start so I think I'll go back to the common room," Ron sighs walking into the entrance hall and towards the grand staircase.
"You haven't started your essay?" Hermione gasps. "It's due tomorrow, Ronald! Professor McGonagall will be furious."
"Just because you started it a week and a half ago doesn't mean that I had to!" Ron sighs with an eye roll, trying to defend himself while walking ahead of Hermione and the others to disengage.
"Looks like we'll be a while, y/n," Harry sighs.
"That's fine...," she sighs. "I'll walk with you to your common room and I'll see you again later."
With that, the trio and y/n and continues on, Hermione and Ron bickering about the essay incessantly.
"Well that does mean that it should take more thought than two hour's worth," Hermione sighs with a laugh, stepping onto the moving staircase. Looking up the staircase, Harry frowns, looking at the large heard of people around the portrait hole.
"What's going on?" Hermione whispers under her breath as they rush up the stairs to join the twins who are standing next to each other before the portrait hole.
"Looks like something pretty nasty here," Fred states.
"Some beast really did a number on it," George adds pointing to the Fat Lady's portrait. Hermione gasps, looking at the claw marks that cut down to the wood through the canvas.
"The head master's here" Percy shouts from down the staircase. "Make way I'm head boy! Make way!"
Pressing themselves against the sides of the stairs, Ron, Harry, Hermione, and y/n watch as Dumbledore, followed by Filch who's clutching his long-haired cat, Mrs Norris, goes directly up to the portrait hole. Dumbledore surveys the damage and calls on filch to look for the fat lady. Filch points up the stairs and Dumbledore and numerous students crowd around a hippopotamus painting. The trio and y/n stay still and watch in silence until Dumbledore turns around.
"Mr Filch, secure the castle!" Dumbledore booms. "Gather everyone in the Great Hall. Make sure they're prepared to spend the night there. There's been a break in."
The students around them scatter and start to shout, heading back to the common rooms to grab sets of pyjamas and study materials for the night.
"Professor!" y/n calls to him as he passes. He turns to her calmly and looks her in the eye through his half-moon spectacles.
"What got in?" she asks and the trio leans in close to listen.
"Sirius Black," he responds and Ron's eyes widen. As Harry's jaw drops to the floor, Hermione sighs.
"Well, we better get the Great Hall like we're supposed to," y/n sighs with a shake of her head. "I'm going to get my stuff. See you later."
Y/n waves goodbye and heads down the stairs by herself. She comes to a blank stretch of wall and mutters the password to herself. Sure enough, Draco Malfoy with his overly bandaged arm and his group are all walking out of the dorms, sets of pyjamas in their hands. Blaise Zabini laughs as Draco does a degrading impression of Professor Dumbledore. Y/n rolls her eyes and scoffs as the other Slytherins laugh their heads off with glee.
"I can't believe this has happened! A true imbecile would let this much danger come to the students!" Draco spits. "Shit like this would never happen if someone like my father was in charge around here! It's just ridiculous. Just because the Gryffindor's common room is in danger doesn't mean that all of us have to be inconvenienced! I-"
Draco stops in his tracks, as y/n locks eyes with him. She shakes her head in disappointment and walks to her dorm to get her stuff, as Pansy and Theo hiss at Draco, asking him what's wrong with him.
~~~~~
Draco blinks his eyes open and stirs uncomfortably. He stares up at the ceiling of the Slytherin dorms after an awful night's sleep.
"You look awful Malfoy," Crabbe comments from across the room.
"Shut it, Crabbe!" Draco shouts, kicking the covers off of him and heading to his trunk to change into his uniform.
"Wow, Malfoy. why so bitter?"Theodore Nott asks.
"None of your business," Draco replies coldly.
To be perfectly honest, the reason why Draco has been bitter was y/n. He hasn't forgotten their little encounter before potion's class and he's made very little progress so far on becoming a better person. He'd gotten to the point where he wouldn't torment the first years or spit at Hermione and other muggle-borns in the halls, which y/n hasn't seemed to notice because each and every time he'd be saying something hateful or make one of his normal Malfoy-esque jokes, she'd walk in or orverhear the whole thing. The next day he'd decide he'll start being a good person, but he'd fall back to his old ways like a creature of habit. She'd frown and walk away, disappointed and it's gotten to the point that it's like torture for Draco, desperate to be friends with y/n but unable to fix his behaviour.
After finishing getting dressed, Draco heads down the stairs and into the Great Hall for breakfast. All around the hall, he watches as red and yellow banners pass by in celebration of the Hufflepuff versus Gryffindor game today. Draco smiles as he watches y/n sit down at the Slytherin table by herself and walks over to her.
"Hey, y/n," he says with a smile. "Do you mind if I sit here?'
Y/n shrugs, taking out her book and Draco sits and looks straight ahead awkwardly.
"Excited for the game?" he asks nervously as she flips through the pages of her book
"Yes. I'm sure Gryffindor will win today. Harry's been practising for today hard," she says without eye contact.
"Please talk to me, y/n... I want to be your friend," Draco pleads, trying to face her. Y/n sighs and shoves her bookmark in her book. She sets it down and scowls at him.
"I don't think I want to. You haven't made any effort at all to become more tolerable, Malfoy. Harry, Ron, and Hermione think so, too. Frankly, I don't want to be in your company at all!" she replies, her cheeks turning red. "Before I thought you could change but you are unsurprisingly incapable!"
"Please give me a chance!" Draco begs, but y/n shakes her head as the trio come to her side.
"Why are you bothering her, Malfoy?" Harry hisses.
"Didn't you hear her?" Ron grumbles.
"Yes I did, but I'm trying so hard!" Draco cries. "Please just talk with me... Come to the next Hogsmeade visit with me and I won't gossip or complain with Pansy and the others ever again! You can even follow me around to make sure if you have to! Just please give me a chance to talk to you without any of the others around..."
"Don't do it, y/n," Ron urges. "Malfoys never change! It's obviously a trick! It's all aprt of his master plan for world domination!"
"Let her decide, Weasley!" Draco shouts at Ron. "And I don't have a plan like that. You're so stupid!"
"Hey! Watch it, Malfoy!" Harry shouts. "That's my best friend you're talking to!"
"I'm your friend, too, Harry and be quiet, you idiots!" Hermione groans.
"Nobody asked your opinion you,"
"QUIET!" y/n gasps, still holding onto her book. "Will you really never do it again?"
Draco turns to her quietly and nods.
"Then you have a deal, Malfoy," she says, standing up. "See you Saturday. I'm going to find seats for the match to cheer Harry on from."
She steps out of her seat and leaves the Great Hall, the golden trio utterly surprised and Draco smiling from the inside out.
~~~~~
Groaning, Ron leans against the stone wall of a corridor seeing Malfoy wave in y/n's direction.
"Are you sure he's not secretly the cockroach we all know he is on the inside?" he asks y/n who's smiling ear to ear.
"I'm sure he's good, Ron. He's not evil like you think.
"Are you sure?" he asks and y/n nods confidently. "I mean... are you absolutely sure?"
"Yes! I am... and I'm not going to doubt myself. Like it or not, Draco and me is happening," y/n grins. Ron groans in disappointment. "He's not terrible!" she adds.
"Can't believe he won you over in the end...," Harry sighs. "I guess it's the way the cookie crumbles..."
"Don't compare Draco and me to a cookie with structure issues!" y/n laughs. "See you all later. I need to help Draco with his essay.
"But you said you'd help me with mine!" Ron shouts as y/n rushes to Draco.
"You have Hermione and Harry!" she shouts back, leaving the trio in the dust, running into Draco's arms.
"Hey...," he smiles, kissing her cheek.
"Come on, let's go to the library. The essay's due in three days and we need to start the outline," y/n smiles.
"Come on... Can't we have some fun and hang out before?" Draco asks, wrapping his arms around her.
"Fine... Just this once," she sighs with a smile. He hisses her eagerly and takes her hand, leading ehr away from teh other Slytherins to go somewhere where they can be alone.
