Peter leaves the cave, afraid of what he might find in there, and decides to try to make a sort of lean-to using any branches he can find.
He works for a very long time and is exhausted. It's night time. He was working so hard he forgot to build a fire while he still had the sun to shine through his glasses. He gathers kindling anyway and prepares the foundation for a fire. Soon, he gets an idea and decides to strike his knife's blade against a rock to try and get a spark. He spends probably an hour striking a rock with his blade. It's very difficult to start a fire at all, let alone with only a knife and a rock.
Eventually, he accomplishes his goal. He fills his pot with water then sets it on the fire. When it boils, he carefully takes it off. Now he has clean water.
It's late. He decides to go to sleep, calmed by the warmth of the fire.
He wakes up the next morning next to the fire which had long been dead. He sighs. He'd hoped it'd been a dream.
