"You are late! What kept you so long?"
A loud, rash voice shouted at me as I sighed as I wiped my forehead from sweat. I ran all the way from my class to the cafateria just so I can fufil a promise that I was about to do.
Which was a promise that I kinda regret, seeing on how I am treated so far. In front of me is Ruby, a well-known hot headed third year in this school that had exceededly strong temper. She has numerous friends around the batch such as Layla and the student council leader, Lesley. With her uniform quite messy to look at, her blazer not buttoned and slightly wrinkled presumably from her constant activeness, and a red eyepatch to boot, no wonder that some people were avoiding her like a plague, thinking that she is way too childish or hot headed.
Which for me, wasn't the deal at all. I have known Ruby ever since first year in this high school as we were seatmates at the time and she was still brash and harsh to me. Yet, she has that other side that she sometimes shows whenever she genuinely wants to help you out or wants to understand you.
Like a rose covered in thorns, you can only grasp it if you prickle the thorns out. In this case, you just need to be used to Ruby's... tsundere tendencies.
"Look, I'm sorry for being late alright?" I exclaimed as I held my breath for a bit, feeling exhausted from the run I did. "Mathematics was a pain to finish out, y'know?"
She huffed as she rolled her visible eye. "Well, it is for you because you are such a dummy." Ruby remarked dryly as she sighed and grabbed the handle of the door. "C'mon, just buy me some ice cream and I'll say that the promise has been settled."
I nodded as I grabbed my wallet from my pockets and went in as Ruby opened the door. The tables are quite vacant as most of the students have already went home since the last period was already over. When that happens, I usually hang out with Ruby as she usually comes at the cafeteria to eat something before she goes home... which was one of my promises to her that I'll treat her ice cream since she helped me study for the exams.
Me and her looking at the cooler of the cafateria, she went on grabbing a strawberry flavored popsicle, which she usually buys everytime she enters the premises. I grabbed a chocolate cone one as I went to the cashier and bought those two off.
Giving her ice cream back, she smiled as she unwrapped the popsicle and immediately put it on her mouth. "Ahhhh~ that hits the spot!" She exclaimed happily as she was walking towards one of the vacant benches. I chuckled a bit as I unwrapped mine and started eating the cold treat as I followed her to one of the benches.
Sitting on the bench, Ruby kept on licking her popsicle without the care of the world as I just minded my own. It was quite awkward to think about it actually as I am sitting with a girl.. alone on a bench. It would really get the other students different ideas, but for now in a rather vacant place, I didn't care much.
I stared at Ruby as she was enjoying her popsicle, the glint in her blue eyes shows that she was really happy that I managed to give her what I promised. That gave me a warm feeling of happiness, a wave of joy wavered through me as I saw my friend enjoying what I bought for her. Sure, she was insistent upon it but I couldn't be helped to be happy that she is enjoying it.
Suddenly, she noticed that I was staring at her. "E-eh? What are you looking at?" She asked, her cheeks slightly flushed as she shyly looked away. "I-it is rude to stare at people, y'know!"
I chuckled as I took a bite on my chocolate delight. "Well, I can't help it. You get shy when I stare at you, which is really cute." I teased, making her glare at me with her blue eyes.
"If you didn't bought this ice cream for me, I would have just punched you right then and there." She remarked, making me chuckle nervously from her threat. Ruby was no slouch on her physical paramaters at all, effectively to be one of the most strongest girls in school.
"Ehm... nevermind." I replied as I looked away from her, quite afraid that she would follow through with her threat. I heard her chuckle, a sweet tone that invigorated my ears as she kept on eating her popsicle.
"You just have to be a sissy huh?" She commented playfully, making me roll my eyes from that comment.
"No. I just don't want myself to end up having my arms feel sore." I replied. She continued her giggling as I finished my ice cream.
"Jeez, I won't hit you at all." Ruby said as her eyes darted to another direction. "W-well.. except if you are being stupid and all that..."
Her cheeks slightly flushed once more as I raised my eyebrow but didn't say anything as I saw her finishing up her popsicle. It was a silent ambience all the sudden as it was quite awkward to say the least. I wasn't much of a talker really, just a person that commonly goes with the flow sort of deal. I sense that Ruby was on the same boat as I, as she was quite tongue tied whenever she tries to start up the conversation if ever.
So with that reasoning, I decided to speak up to break the silence. "Well... how was your class?" I asked her. I saw her flinch slightly before smiling with her usual smile.
"Eh, it went all good!" She remarked happily. "It was.. really good."
I noticed that her hands gripped the hem of her skirt in a frustrated manner as she went on talking about her class. It was always comforting to know that she was doing alright even though she didn't knew anyone there. Yet seemingly, something was off this time as her lips quivered everytime she mentioned her classmates like she was struggling to even mention the word without cracking up.
That's when I realize that there were some problems over there that she wasn't telling me yet I knew that I have to be rational about it. I don't want her to get angry that I had interrupted her so I just let her talk about what was happening. Yet with every syllable... every word that comes out of her lips, her face has says it all.
She wasn't happy at the first place.
Finally, she noticed my careful yet calculating gaze on her, making her stop talking as she averted her eyes as the silence greeted us. I didn't say anything as I outstretched my arms, full knowing what she needed now.
Ruby went and hugged me right then and there, her eyes tearing up as she started to cry. Her tears drench my school polo shirt, which I didn't mind at all. All I want is to give my friend the comfort she needed right now, the comfort that she deserves.
After a while, she stopped crying as she looked at me, her eyes red from tears. Ruby gave me a small smile as she pulled back from the hug, rubbing her eyes to remove the tears. "G-guess you know what's going on huh?"
I simply nodded, making her sigh. "It wasn't supposed to be that way you know?" She remarked as she looked down. "I thought that people would appreciate me over there and yet... they just made fun of me."
She continued as her throat started croaking. "I...I don't understand... on how they can be so cruel... making fun of me and my looks..." She said. "Yet the worst thing of all..."
"They made fun of you too...which I couldn't accept that..." My eyes widened at those words. I was making fun off? I never heard about anyone making fun of me at all.
"...what do you mean? I didn't hear anyone that was mocking me." I asked yet she gave me a small smile. A smile that held both pain and happiness in one go that made my heart clench when I saw that.
"Because... I fought them off... claiming that if you get bullied... I'll be the one to answer that." She responded lowly, quite ashamed about it. I sighed at this. It was expected of her to do so as she really cared for her friends depite how tsundere she can be outside.
"Well.. can't say that I am proud of you, Ruby." I told her as I gave a smile. "Yet I am honored that you fought for me...it makes me feel happy that there is someone that looks over me despite I don't tell them to."
She blushed as she huffed her cheeks. "I-I just don't want you to be down, dummy!" She remarked, her tsundere mode must have switched back. I chuckled as I stood up from the bench. I extended my hand, which she looked at it at first before grabbing it and helped her up.
"C'mon.. it's getting late." I told her as I started to walk to the exit. "We better go home now... we still have some homework to do-"
I got cut off as I felt a pair of lips on my cheek, making me blush hard as I turned to my right to see Ruby looking away from me with the same color of my face. I was about to ask her why she did that but she immediately turned to me and gave me a smile that stunned me in place.
"Well, what are we waiting for? Let's go." She exclaimed bashfully, snapping me out of my stupor as she went of the exit, presumably embarrassed from what she had done. I clutched the part of my cheek that she had kissed before smiling to myself as I left the cafateria as well.
There's the side that I love about her so much.
