Pressing your binders and reports to your chest, you rush down the hallway of Mahoutokoro.
"Can't be late, can't be late, can't be late...!" you mumble to yourself, turning the corner shakily, dropping some quills in the process. You reach your classroom door and open it up with your back, pressing up against if forcefully. As you enter the room, the teacher and the students all turn to look at you,
"Sumimasen, kyōju," you say shyly. The teacher instructs you to sit down in the corner and turns back around, writing the assignment on the board. The teacher's words and actions fade as you reach down to your school bag and pull out letters from last summer. They're from Draco. You open one up and stare at it fondly, looking at Draco's handwriting with its uniquely curled ts and slanted fs. No word from Draco yet, despite his promise.
"You may be taking her now, but you won't keep us apart! We'll be together until the end! I love y/n and she loves me! You can't change that!" he had said, but now, you're starting to doubt his words.
"Does he really still love me?" you murmur to yourself. The whole class turns around to face you, the teacher staring at you angrily. She points to the door, telling you to go to the head of school's office. You gather your things in shame and return to the hall, making your way up the stairs to face punishment for "disruption of class" for the fourth time this week.
~~~~~
"Did you really get sent to the office again, y/n?" one of your new friends asks from beside you on the bench in Japanese. You shrug, swirling your noodles around in your bowl with your pair of light bamboo chopsticks. "Hey! Y/n! Are you listening to me?"
"Oh, yeah. I am," you sigh in reply. You yawn and grab your bag from your feet. "I think I'm going to go back to my dorm. I don't care if I get in trouble for skipping afternoon classes. I'm in trouble already. It wouldn't make a difference."
"No," he says sternly. "You'll be making it worse and I'm not going to let you get yourself suspended or expelled from school. Stay here, y/n."
He takes a second to drink out of his cup and sighs heavily. You cross your arms in defiance and turn away from him.
"Why have you been acting out?" he asks. "I mean more than usual. When you first got here, you were all subdued and quiet. When we first got to be friends, you were shy and quiet. I could tell you had baggage with you, but I didn't ask about it. It wouldn't have been polite. Now you're angry and you grumble a lot. It's affecting your school work and grades. Everyone's afraid of you. I can tell you're mad about what happened, even confused."
"So what if I am?" you grumble, putting your lunch down.
"What do you mean 'so what', y/n? You're bitter all the time! Will you always be this way?" he asks.
"Possibly," you reply, gathering up your things slowly.
"Y/n... Stop this nonsense and go back to the real y/n. This is ridiculous."
"You've never seen the real me. Not once and I'm not going to go back to that until I get my answers about what happened that day," you say, getting up and walking out on your friend who is staring straight at you back, wondering what you mean.
~~~~~
Another lull, you think to yourself, tugging on the white string your apron, leaning against the restaurant wall. Since graduating Mahoutokoro, nothing's gotten better. Draco hasn't written and your father has gotten more and more unbearable. He's started going on and on about how much superior the people in Japan are to the people in Britain and how easily he can arrange a "quality" marriage instead of having such a frivolous daughter pick a person to marry for herself. Trying to get away from him, you moved out of your parents and got a small apartment near your job, waitressing at a local ramen shop. Now, at four o'clock in the afternoon, you're faced with the boredom of the usual late Tuesday afternoon lull. You pick up a pen and start tapping your notepad, waiting for someone to come through the door.
"Ugh!" you groan, throwing your pad down on the countertop and disappearing into the storage closet for inventory, which you failed to do yesterday. You open up the supply closet and turn on the light. You press a button on the radio next to you and turn up the music, humming along to the tune. "Fifty soup bowls... Five boxes of bamboo chopsticks... sixty soup spoons.... and no new broken... bowls..."
The golden bell on the door rings in the background. You sigh and keep shuffling through the closet.
"Y/n!!!" Tetsuo, the owner of the restaurant shouts as you are whipping down the containers with a rag. "Come serve this nice man! We cannot lose any business!"
You shut off the radio roughly and exit the supply closet, folding up the ran and throwing it over your shoulder. You snatch up your notepad and hold your pen to it.
"Yokos-" you begin to say cheerily, but you freeze as soon as you look up. Originally, you had expected someone older who had retired and would not be in school or at work, but no. He smiles warmly, running his fingers through his soft, blonde hair.
"Hi, y/n. I'm sorry it's been so long. My father.... He-"
You cut him off, throwing yourself into his arms, squealing with delight. You cup your hands around his face and kiss him full on the lips, smiling at the same time. Draco smiles, too, holding you tighter than he ever has before.
"Y/n... I'm so sorry. All those years... I missed so much... We could hav-"
"Shhh... It's alright, Draco," you say softly, putting your finger to his lips. "I'm just glad to see you. Let's talk about it later."
Out of the corner of your eye, you see Tetsuo smiling.
"... Maybe over a bowl of ramen. Tetsuo doesn't like me taking breaks so the least I can do is give him some business. Hungry?" you smile.
"Am I. I've been searching for you for weeks, y/n, and I've finally got you again," Draco smiles, keeping you in his arms. You lead him over to your favourite table next to the window at the front of the restaurant. Draco graciously pulls out the chair for you and you sit down in it. Draco hasn't changed a bit. He sits across from you and Tetsuo comes and serves you your bowls. Draco hands him some money with a generous tip. he sighs and smiles, scoffing a bit.
"I can't believe I'm here with you. It's taken me this long to find you again. It's ridiculous. I feel like I'm the worst boyfriend in the world... if that's what I still am to you, y/n," Draco sighs in disappointment and you reach over the table and take his hand.
"I don't care anymore that it took so long. In the beginning, I did. I thought you didn't love me anymore and I started to doubt what we had...," you sigh.
"Oh, y/n. Please don't tell me that... I loved you all those years... I know I can't make up for it, but I want to spend the rest of our lives together... If you'll have me," Draco gasps, quickly, shaking a bit. You smile at the table and then look back up.
"I've missed how you talk when you're nervous. It reminds me of Hogwarts," you laugh. "So, Draco. We've been apart for over two years. What've I missed?"
