"Come on, slacker, we'll be late!" you yell to Draco, who's sitting in the empty Great Hall at the Slytherin table, eating his muffin and reading the Daily Prophet lazily. His hand is still bandaged from coming in contact with Buckbeak the Hippogriff, but he's seemed to be able to manage well without his arm, despite what he claims. You rush in and stand at the end of the Slytherin table, putting your hands firmly on your hips, your school bag hanging from your shoulder.
Staying in the Great Hall until the very end of every meal has always been a very Draco thing to do. It had become a habit over the years, and you, being Draco's best friend since the first day of first year, had decided it was your job to remedy this habit of his. Your and Draco's friendship is a friendship that everyone at Hogwarts is jealous of. It's the type of friendship everyone else wishes they had. Everyone at Hogwarts is jealous of your closeness to Draco, especially since you're practically one being. You and Draco go everywhere together. Classes, meals, study breaks, Quidditch. Everything you do together and neither of you would want it any other way.
"Come on, y/n. It's alright to be late once in a while," Draco chuckles. He laughs and folds up his paper, tucking it under his arm and gets up from his seat.walking over to you.
"Well, there's a special demonstration in Defense Against the Dark Arts today and we shouldn't miss a second of it, Draco. Unlike you, I care about my schooling," you sigh.
"Hey, I care about my schooling!" Draco snaps back just as the bell tolls. "See, y/n. Now you made us late!"
"I did not! You were the one who dawdled!" you laugh. "It's your own fault that we're both late! I was only being the great best friend that I am in trying to help you be on time, but instead, you took too long!"
"So be it, y/n," Draco smiles. "Lupin won't mind a bit. We can just sneak in and stand at the back. It's no big deal."
"Hah. Says you," you say, grinning and punching him lightly on the shoulder as you both head to the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom. After continuing up a few flights of stairs, you head down a long hallway to a heavy wooden door. "Shhh," you say, holding a finger in front of your lips. "We shouldn't be noticed." Draco shrugs and you both press your body weights against the door to open it slowly with a low rumble of stone against wood. You both slip in with your school bags and join the mass of other third years in the centre of the room.
"So nice of you to join us, Mr Malfoy. You too, Miss y/l/n," Professor Lupin smiles. You laugh once nervously and join Draco at the side of the room. Professor Lupin clears his throat and begins talking about the Boggart and what it is. Of course, Hermione Granger could answer every question about the creature. Professor Lupin also introduces a spell, Riddikulus, to the class, meant to ward off Boggarts, which Draco promptly responded to with:
"This class is ridiculous!"
"Shut up, you," you had replied to Draco's comment.
Now, Neville Longbottom stands in front of the wardrobe holding the Boggart, his wand at the ready. Lupin flicks his wand and the wardrobe opens with a heavy clicking noise. Out comes Professor Snape. he walks menacingly up to Neville. Neville raises his wand and in an instant, the professor's usual clack cloak turns into a bottle green skirt and blouse accompanied by a vulture-topped hat with a red leather handbag. The class erupts with laughter from the Gryffindors, Hufflepuffs, and Ravenclaws while the Slytherins all stay silent, crossing their arms in disapproval. Professor Lupin class to the class to form a line and students begins to push and shove to either get tot he very back of the line or the very front.
"Come on, Draco!" you call, grabbing Draco's good hand and pulling him up to the front of the line. Draco chuckles and follows, standing second in line before you. The first person up is Ron Weasley. The Boggart swiftly turns into a gigantic black widow spider who advances quickly on Ron. Terrified, Ron squeaks out the spell and the spider's legs disappear and the remaining body rolls around on the floor. The crowd laughs.
"Yeah, Malfoy!" Crabbe calls from the back and the other Slytherins whoop and cheer. As they do this, you ask yourself what Draco's fear could be. Despite how inseparable you two have been, Draco has never divulged his greatest fear to you. You shrug and turn your head to the front of the room where the Boggart is transforming in a swirl of colour.
The Boggart materializes. It's you. Draco takes a step back as the you front of him sheds a tear, a pained look taking over her face quickly. She falls to her knees, gasping incomprehensible words and phrases. Draco gasps, his eyes welling up with tears as a copy of his best friend in pain struggles to breathe on the floor. The Boggart version of you starts to cry as her skin turns pale and sickly. She starts to shake as her skin begins to crack. She begins to fall apart. Draco drops his wand and it clatters loudly on the floor as the Boggart's image turns into nothing but a pile of fine sand. Draco falls to his knees and lets out a wail of pain and sadness, a waterfall of tears flooding his vision.
"Draco!' you call to him, dropping down beside him and throwing your arms around him. The other students gasp and Professor Lupin rushed forward, shouting the spell and forcing the Boggart back into the wardrobe.
"Miss y/l/n, please take Mr Malfoy to the hall to calm down," Professor Lupin says. You nod and help Draco up slowly, leading him out of the class as your classmates all murmur and whisper about what they just saw together.
Out in the hall, you take Draco over to a bench and sit down next to him. He avoids your gaze and stares down at the floor, his face red and blotchy.
"Draco?" you ask softly. "Draco? Can you look at me?"
He shakes his head with a jerk.
"Well, then, can you at least talk to me?" you ask. He sighs.
"You weren't supposed to see that, y/n. I'm sorry. You probably think I'm a wuss now," he sighs. "Draco Malfoy: the boy who couldn't handle a simple magical creature."
"No, Draco. It's not like that at all," you say, wrapping your arms around him. "Boggarts are meant to be the thing a person fears the most. Anyone would have been freaked out and scared nearly to death in your situation. This was your first time facing your biggest fear."
"I-I'm sorry, y/n. What you saw must have been disturbing for you. It definitely was for me," he sighs. You both sit in silence for a moment. He starts to cry again, but you wipe away his tears with your sweater's sleeve.
"So, Draco, is what we say really your greatest fear?" you ask. He nods. "I had no idea, Draco. I'm so sorry."
"I-It's okay. It's time I admit it. You're the most important person in my life, y/n. You're more important to me than my own mother. You give me the support and the friendship I really need. You're great. We're best friends. We have inside jokes, we laugh and smile together, we trust each other, you're always there for me. You're the best person I've ever known, y/n and I would be and have nothing without you," Draco says shakily.
"Me, too, Draco," you say, pulling him into a hug. "When I was next in line, I couldn't help but think about my greatest fear and I realised that my boggart would be you dead on the floor. I can't live without you, Draco. You mean too much."
Draco pulls away from the hug and smiles, looking into your eyes.
"Come on, now. Let's get you back to your dorm room. You need to rest a bit. I'll allow you to skip classes just this once, but tomorrow when you try to get out of afternoon classes, I won't be so sympathetic," you smile, pulling him up to a standing position. He smiles and follows you down to the dungeons. Coming up to the enterance of the Slytherin Dorms, he recites the password, opening the wall to the common room. You both walk up to the boys' dorms and into his dorm room. There, Draco lies down to the bed, exhausted. He rolls over and you pull the covers over him.
"Thanks, y/n. You're the best," he sighs, closing his eyes softly.
"Anytime, Bestie. Sleep well," you chuckle, walking over and kissing him lightly on the forehead, quickly exiting the room afterwards. Knowing he's smiling broadly behind you, you rush out the to Slytherin common room to go back to classes to be sure not to get caught in a common space while class is in session.
