Chapter Sixty-Six

-Taylor’s P.O.V-

It’s almost Christmas now and the good news is Drew is out of jail. Well, since he’s a student they decided to go easy on him. Funny, I don’t remember that rule, not that I’m against it or anything.

It’s snowing outside, but it isn’t as cold as last year, which is great news.

School has been normal as always, but the crowd is having a hard time being around Drew. Everyone was afraid that they might be the next victim or something. Drew did make an apologizing speech when he first came back, apparently some of them refused to take that in. Poor guy, but I don’t blame anyone for this. It’s just a pure misunderstanding, that’s all.

Cain and the others are starting to open up to Drew now. Sure, they really thought I went bonkers when I said that we’re friends, but at least they’re doing me a big favor by not taking any sides, I’m pretty sure we’ll all get along.

Our group had become bigger now that Drew is hanging out with us, which is still awkward sometimes, but awkward is good, it’s better than before. And plus, Melissa is now hanging out with us too. For Melissa, it’s a different case. She was once our friend two years ago, so having her back may be shocking to the school, but it’s fine with us. It’s the same feeling like reuniting with your old friend.

Okay, so things are finally improving now. It was going downhill for a moment before, but now it’s turning around again. Maybe I should stay optimistic.

“So, Christmas is only a few days away people.” Cain announced happily. “I’m not exactly the celebrating kind, but ironically I’m in the mood. Anybody opening a party?”

“Nope.” I shook my head. “Not me.”

“Wait, wasn’t it your turn this year?” said Zoey.

“What do you mean, my turn?”

“You’re the one who said it yourself. I had a party last year, Cain had it two years ago, Shane had it almost all the time, Ash had it before too and Faith was supposed to have it next year. It’s your turn this year.”

“What kind of rule is that?”

“It’s not a rule, it’s just something you thought of a few years ago.”

“Who on earth remembers what I say a few years ago?” I frowned.

“I do.” Zoey grinned. “So, go tell your parents about it. I’m sure they won’t decline.”

“Gosh, it’s all happening so soon now that Tessa is engaged.” I smiled wryly. “I still can’t believe Luke is going to be my brother-in-law. This is all too crazy, in a good way.”

“I bet none of you guys saw that coming.” Said Shane.

“Not me.” Faith giggled. “I guess things can’t be predictable all the time.”

“Things are never predictable, Faith.” Ash made a face. “It’s…kind of like you and me.”

          “HAH!” Cain reacted suddenly.

          “What?”

“Oh, nothing.” He smiled to himself. “Are Drew and Melissa dating now?”

“Seems like it.” I looked around randomly. “Now that I look at it, they sure seem like they’re meant for each other and stuff. I guess they’re not so bad.”

“They’re not so bad now.” Zoey corrected. “I kind of pity Drew, though. It was his family that caused most of the things in his life. Sadly the public treats that as crap.”

“Well, then the public is crap.” I said defensively. “Uh, anyway, about that Christmas thing…”

“Yah, so we’re having it at your place, okay? No excuses.” Cain prodded.

“Gosh, since when did you have the power to decide for me?”

“I never did. You just don’t block me out, that’s all.” He flashed a broad smile. “And plus, we all know what happens to a couple during Christmas, right?”

“What, are you talking about us?” Zoey dazzled.

“Uh, we’ve had our Christmas last year and the year before that.” he winked. “I’m talking about new couples, or soon-to-be couples.”

“Oh!” said Zoey, completely alert. “I see what you mean!”

“Not so obvious, Zoe.” Cain hissed.

“Right, sorry.” She smirked. “Yeah, nothing is more romantic than having your soon-to-be soul mate over and then getting him or her to confess, right?”

“What are you getting at?” I stared coldly.

“Nothing. Don’t be over-sensitive, I was just letting my tongue run for a while, if you know what I mean.” Said Zoey calmly. “What, you didn’t think that I was talking about you and Shane–”

          “ZOEY!”

“Oops, sorry.” She smiled apologetically. “My tongue slipped.”

“You better make sure that that’ll be the last time.”

“Okay, okay, just chill.” She sighed. “Uh, we’ll talk more later.”

          “I don’t wanna talk more.” I complained.

“But we have to.” She said demandingly. “This is important.

“Fine.” I decided to give in to avoid further argument. Man, this is such a pain. But still, I’d like to have a word with Zoey herself. She should really be careful with her words sometimes.

Hah, what was she thinking about Shane and I?

Zoey had said that the conversation was kind of inconvenient in school, so she literally dragged me out of it without giving me a chance to say bye to the others. Well, this better be good.

“What’s so urgent and important that you had to sound so demanding?” I droned under the cold weather.

“It’s about the both of you.” She muttered. “I’ve talked to Cain about it the whole night last night. He said Shane might be making his move any time now, so you shouldn’t play hard-to-get.”

“I’m not playing hard-to-get.” I snapped. “That’s so old school.”

“Oh yeah? Then why do I get the feeling that you’re building a wall between the two of you? It’s like you’re not really talking to him much.”

“He makes me nervous, okay?” I blurted without further explanations. “It’s not like I’m avoiding him, or trying to, it’s just that his cool expression and carefree behavior is kind of hard to handle.”

“That’s new to me.” She raised a brow. “You’ve been friends with him for so long. This is the first time that you’ve ever mentioned about that.”

“That’s because it came recently.” I sighed. “It’s not like I can do anything about it.”

“So you like that dude that much, huh?”

“I dunno.” I slurred. “It feels like he doesn’t feel the same way.”

“He’s just being unobvious. You know that guy; he’s really bad at expressing something especially when it comes down to relationships and girls.”

“But they’re a lot of girls dropping notes in his lockers, right?”

“Ever since the makeover, yes.” She nodded briskly. “It’s not like he actually said yes to any of those girls…or guys, anyway.”

          “Guys?!”

“Well, forget if I said anything.” she shrugged.

          “Gosh, that’s gross.” I made a face.

“Yeah, and believe me, he isn’t the type of guy who likes attention so it’s up to you to help stop those notes from flying in.”

          “How?”

“Simple. You date him, people will know that he’s taken, and they’ll eventually realize that they’ll never be together.”

“Isn’t that kind of cruel?” I frowned. “And plus, I don’t wanna date Shane for those reasons…”

“Well yeah, but at the same time you’ll save Shane’s life.” She said.

          “What makes you so sure?”

“I know people.” She beamed. “Okay, enough of this chit-chat. Less talk, more acting. Now, I know that we’ve gone through this before…”

          “What are you getting at?”

“Its winter now and the malls are having a Christmas Sale. You should tag along with me so we can get you a nice dress for Christmas.”

“Why must I always tag along to go shopping with you?”

“Because there isn’t anyone else who can do that. So, are you in or what? It’s not like there isn’t any sale. Sales are damn worth it, you know?”

“Ugh, fine.” I hesitated. “But you’ll have to buy me dinner.”

“Fine by me.” Zoey said. “Alright, let’s get going. I saw this really cute dress that might be just nice for you.”

“That’s what they all say.” I rolled my eyes hysterically while following Zoey to the mall. It’s not like I have anything better to do, anyway.
