From that moment on everything seemed to be a blur. I've had more questions, another tests and I've lost count on how many needles I've had jabbed in my arm, the pain has eased but I still can't rest knowing there's something the doctors not telling me.
"I'm sorry to keep you waiting, but we're trying to find out as much as we can before we confirm anything," the nurse smiled standing beside my bed.
"I've waited hours, you must have some news," I replied.
"Come on, we're worried sick here," Aston sighed.
"I understand your concern but we're doing everything we can as quick as we can. However I do have the results of your blood test now."
"Okay, well what do they say?"
"I've assesd the HCG levels in your blood with the doctor and it does in fact show that you could be pregnant."
"Sorry, what?" I stuttered.
"Pregnant?" Aston repeated.
"It must be a shock for you both as I presume the pregnancy wasn't planned, but I'm sure you're aware that no contraception is one hundred percent safe."
"I know but, I mean what's the chances?"
"Perhaps you've missed a pill, have you been under any stress lately?"
"No, I always take it every morning."
"It's hard to believe I know, but these things happen."
"How far gone is she?" Aston asked.
"It's not quite that simple I'm afraid."
"Hold on, you said I could be pregnant?" I frowned.
"I did yes," she replied.
"What do you mean by that?"
"Because of the pains you've had and the blood you've lost, we'd like to give you a transvaginal ultrasound to see what's going on."
"Everything's okay though right?" Aston croaked.
"I'm having a miscarriage aren't I?" I gulped.
"I'm afraid we can't say for certain just yet, but yes we are concerned that you've miscarried."
"Oh my god," I gasped.
"I know it's hard but try not to panic, I'll be back in just a moment," she said.
I looked to Aston beside me frozen in shock, the only emotion on his face being the single tear trickling down his cheek. I can't believe what I'm hearing, I've been cautious ever since I was sixteen and only ever dreamt of having a baby scan when I'm settling down with the love of my life. I've only just become Aston's girlfriend, I shouldn't be carrying his child yet.
"I'm so sorry," I weeped.
"Shh," he whispered wiping his tear and squeezing my hand tight.
"This is all my fault, I should have let you bring me to the hospital earlier."
"No, none of this is your fault."
"I've left it too late, I know I have."
"No you don't, come on don't talk like this."
I closed my eyes to stop the tears and placed my hand on my stomach, I can't believe there's been a baby growing inside without me having the faintest idea.
"I don't understand Aston, the chance of falling pregnant on the pill is ridiculous."
"Are you sure you haven't missed a pill?"
""I told you I take it every morning."
"But your routine stopped as soon as Charlie came home."
"I don't think I would have forgotten."
"That's the only protection we use."
"It's my fault then isn't it?"
"I'm not saying that. I'd understand if you forgot a couple."
"I shouldn't be making that mistake though."
"Did you use anything with Charlie?"
"What?"
"Did you use a condom?"
"No, I told you I didn't think about what I was doing."
"So the baby could be his."
"Don't say that," I mumbled.
"Well it's fifty-fifty isn't it?"
"No, it can't be Charlie's."
Bringing the machine with her the nurse returned beside my bed, I'm now feeling sick with nerves holding Aston's hand beside me. The thought of Charlie fathering my child is terrifying.
"Okay, if you could lay down for me with your knees bend and soles flat I will cover you from your waist with this sheet," she asked.
Already undressed in a gown I did as instructed. Despite being my second internal examination I'm dreading this as much as the first time.
"Try to relax, it may feel a little uncomfortable," she warned.
I looked to the screen on my right next to the nurse, to us it's just a black and white blur but somehow it's showing the her everything she needs. I listened carefully for the faintest heartbeat or the smallest sack, I don't know much about pregnancies but I can guess something's wrong by the nurses reaction.
"There's nothing there is there?" I asked.
"I'm afraid not no, I can't find a heartbeat."
"But you've hardly looked," Aston gulped.
She tried again but I knew there was no hope.
"I'm sorry, but the scan confirms a miscarriage."
"No, that can't be right," Aston continued.
I laid in shock completely speechless, how can this baby be snatched away from us both so quickly? I can't take all this in. Aston listened to the nurse explain things more technically hoping to get his head around it, but if anything that made matters worse. It's just words, it doesn't feel real.
"Do you have any questions?" the nurse asked.
"I don't think so," Aston mumbled.
"Are you okay Kayleigh?" she asked again.
I could only nod as the tears rolled down my face.
"I'll give you some time alone, the doctor will be by in the morning to talk to you both."
She packed up her things and left the room once more.
"I'm so sorry," I sobbed.
"It's okay, let it all out," Aston whispered standing up to give me a hug. "You've got nothing to apologise for."
"It doesn't seem possible Aston, how could this happen without us knowing?"
"I don't know baby but that's just how it is sometimes."
"It was only a little fall."
"It was a huge impact to your stomach, you couldn't have done anything to stop this happening."
"If I'd have come here sooner.."
"No, it's not your fault."
"But why us?"
"I don't know."
He pulled back wiping my the tears from my face with the odd one rolling down his cheek.
"I feel so sick," I murmured.
"Don't get yourself in a state, take some deep breaths."
"I just, I can't.." I stuttered.
"Shh.." he hushed kissing my forehead.
"I'm sorry, it's such a shock."
"It's alright, I'm here."
"I can't do this without you."
"I'm not going anywhere."
I gripped both of his hands tight on my lap.
"I'm not saying it's going to be easy but I know we can get through this together," he assured.
"Really?"
"Well you know what they say, everything happens for a reason."
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"Maybe the baby was Charlie's."
"I don't want to think that."
"I know you don't, but what if it was?"
"I don't understand," I frowned.
"I'd have loved to have had a baby with you even if we never talked about it, but I think if it was meant to be it would have happened," he said with his brown puffy eyes looking into mine.
Aston's always been a strong believer in things happening for a reason and he's never been one to show emotion, he's such a strong person. I can see him doing this for the sake of me, just so I've got the support I need.
