I was sitting in the tower on the phone to Luke, who was apologising about our date.
"When are you free next?" he asked me.
"Uh, tomorrow?" I said
"Sure see you- I'll pick you up." we hung up and I picked up the binoculars. I scanned the water, and rested my eyes on the cliffs. I was going to have to do training down at the Tamarama cliffs soon. Sighing, I put the binoculars down and watched the water. Gonz came in and and sat next to me.
"Hey Em, how's Jesse?" I sighed.
"He hates my boyfriend." Gonzo laughed.
"I'm not surprised!" I rolled my eyes just as Hoppo and Deano came in.
"Nala- we're teaching you how to do cliff rescues today." Hoppo told me. Groaning, I got up and pulled on a rashie over my too small bikinis. Deano laughed at my expression and I pulled myself up to follow them to Tama. It was gorgeous day, and the swell wasn't to bad, but I could still tell that the waves were huge and dangerous. Deano chucked the dummy into he water and I watched it get smashed up against the rocks. I gulped.
"Hoppo, do I have to do this?" I asked nervously. He patted me on the back.
"Nala, we have a backup crew out there, just in case. We know this wont be your specialty, but you have to do it." Deano kissed my cheek. I blushed.
"Go for it Nals." he smiled. I took my position above the waves, and waited for Hoppos signal.
"Go!" he yelled. I launched myself off the cliff and as I fell, I felt the air whistle past me. I splashed into the water and instantly felt the pull of the waves. Braveing the sea, I swam against it and managed to retrieve the dummy. I put the band over it and tried to fight the water. I could hear Dad yelling at Hoppo.
"She's not ready!" he yelled. Just this little distraction made me lose my focus.
"Do you want me to lose my daughter?" I heard dad again.
"She should be fit Kerrbox." Hoppo argue back. I felt myself being whacked up against the rocks. A shot of pain ran up my arm and I hit my head. I felt my brain swirling, and I got whacked up against the rocks again. Then, everything went black.
Jesse POV
I was on south end with Mouse, and we had done dozens of rescues! The black cloud really was booming today.
“There’s one Jesse- go!” I heard gonzo radio in from the Tower. I ran in and jumped on the board. I paddled out about 40 metres to the person, realizing it was a morbidly obese man. Groaning to myself, I radioed to mouse.
“Get out here. I need backup.” I heard Mouse chuckled but didn’t retaliate because the man needed my help.
“Sir, lean on the board please.” Mouse came paddling out, and we lay him across the boards, his head on Mouses board, bum on mine. We rode a wave in and I saw mouse gag. As we came in I noticed that Mouse had some chunks on him. Teasingly, I held my nose.
“MOUSE! You stink!” I told him. He scowled at me and stomped up to the tower to clean himself up. I stayed out, and it was as if a cloud had floated over mouse and off me when he left. I did no rescues, and at about 7, I headed back up to the tower to help pack up. The sight I saw in the tower was a strange one. Kerrbox was sitting and sulking and giving death stares to Hoppo. Gonzo, Mouse and Maxi sat there awkwardly, waiting for a response on the phone. Music played from it, probably because they were on hold. Matt Dee walked in at the same time as I did and frowned.
“What’s going on?” he asked. I went in and sat on the railing.
“How about you tell them Hoppo?” Kerrbox snarled. I almost fell off the railing- Box never talks like that.
“Jesse, matt, Nals was taken to hospital.” I actually fell of the railing. I stood up and grabbed my keys. I felt Maxi put his hand on mine.
“Dude, we’ll go soon, but hear Hoppo out.” I sat down again.
“We were training at Tama, near The Twins. She got distracted, and got smashed up against the rocks. Deano and Beardy and Azza went in and got injured, but they weren’t as knocked up as Em.” Hoppo told us.
“We’ll let you know how she is.” Maxi said. He grabbed myself and Kerrbox and pulled us to his car. I was numb all over- I’m sure Kerrbox felt the same way.
We arrived at the Hospital. The nurse directed us through, saying Emilee was in a stable condition and she already had a visitor. I knew that I would have to see Luke again, but for Em, I would be polite. We entered her room and she was talking and holding hands with Luke.
“hey Nala.” I greeted her. Her eyes lit up, and she smiled. Luke scowled. “How are you?” I asked. Luke got up and waited outside. Score!
“Sore- but I’ll be well enough in time to kick your butt in the lifeguard challenge!” Her eyes sparkled and I chuckled.
“Sure.” Kerrbox sat on her other side.
“baby, whats wrong?” She laughed.
“Nothing! My arm is sprained and I have a bruise on my head.” Maxi rolled his eyes.
“Sure, we’ll ask the nurse.” Emilee poked her tongue out.
“Fine then, don’t believe me.” We talked for a bit and then left her for some sleep. She was going to be discharged tomorrow, which meant she really was ok. But I was still angry at Hoppo for letting it happen, and I knew Kerrbox was too. We went to visit Deano and Beardy as well, and they seemed to be in the same condition that Nala was. Beardy was a bit worse with a dislocated shoulder, but Deano just had bruises.
We headed back to maxi’s place to stay the night because he was closest to the hospital. I told Em I was going to visit her tomorrow and I knew she was looking forward to it.
