CHAPTER 17

NO MATTER WHAT

~~~~~~~~~~
Entering out in to the cold, bitter weather; Crystal wrapped her leather jacket tighter around her waist and rubbed her arms with cold hands. She couldn't believe what she had just saw. Scott and Lydia? Scott and Lydia? Coming out of coaches office with swollen lips and messy hair?
Why would Lydia do that to Allison?
No, it's too early to make assumptions and accusations at this point, Crystal had no proof. But she swore that she could put one hundred bucks on that Lydia Martin just sucked faces with Scott McCall in Coach Finstock's office.
Why would Scott do that to his best friend? Why would he make out with the girl that his best friend has been in love with since the third grade?
It had to be the full moon taking affect, but that doesn't make it any easier or give Scott a ticket out of the shit-load he was about to get off of Crystal.
As the small brunette took a seat by the bleachers, she couldn't help but notice Stiles' beaming smile from where he was sitting on the bench. The feeling of guilt and nausea swept through the girls stomach as she thought about what she had just witnessed. She couldn't help but feel bad for the boy who was getting his hopes up on something that was never going to happen.
Just as she was about to get off of her seat and walk towards Stiles, Crystal watched as Scott made his way to his seat on the bench beside Stiles, followed by a certain strawberry blonde who made her way up to sit beside Crystal.
"What the hell did you just do?"
Lydia glanced at her best friend in confusion but her eyes kept flickering back to the field.
"What?"
Crystal just rolled her eyes and glared at the side of Lydia's face. "I hope you realise that what you just did is gonna have some serious precautions."
Lydia scoffed but remained unfazed.
"I have no idea what your talking about,"
"Really? By the looks of it you know exactly what I'm talking about. Seriously? Scott? In coaches office?" Crystal kept her eyed focused on how Lydia's eyes darted around and pursed her lips.
"It was harmless, besides; Allison broke up with him." The redhead tried to back up her answer as her face began to pale in realization.
"I can't believe you!" Crystal laughed humorlessly. "Obviously it's not harmless. I hope you know that by lip-locking with your best friends ex is just gonna make her hate you,"
Lydia just turned to face her best friend, "Criss, please don't tell her. I'm so sorry! I-I didn't know what I was doing... Please don't tell her or Jackson..." Tears where now starting to form in the redheads green eyes as Crystal just rolled her chocolate brown ones.
"I'm not gonna tell her, don't get your G-string in a twist. But you, however; are gonna tell her yourself, Lydia."
Lydia just nodded in appreciation, a tear slipping from her eye as she wiped at it quickly, "Thank you."
Crystal snorted. "Don't thank me for anything, Lydia. If anything I'm pissed off at you."
The conversation ended as Crystal's eyes searched for the pale boy once again, who was talking to Scott. She couldn't help but wonder what Scott would say when Stiles asked what Lydia had said, considering he probably didn't even ask the redhead if she liked Stiles at all.
Judging by the look on Stiles over-joyed expression, Scott puppy-eyes McCall just lied his ass off.
🌙
Practice was in full swing by now as Crystal watched the Lacrosse players line up and take shots in to the goal.
She watched as Stiles came up behind Scott and spoke to him- wait-- Stiles?
He's off the bench?
Scott scooped a ball up in to his net and jogged towards the goal, only to be knocked down by the two people in defense. Not ten seconds later, Scott was back up again, marching back to the front of the line where Stiles was getting ready to scoop a ball in to his own net; only to be pushed back by his best friend abruptly.
"That's it McCall! That's the spirit! Ya' earn it! Earn it, McCall!" Finstock blew his whistle and Scott was off again, jogging towards the goal. Just then, he knocked down the two guys in defense, then whacked the goalie in the face; sending him to the ground. Scott tossed the ball in to the goal.
When Crystal heard everyone shouting 'Danny' she was off the field and sprinting down towards the boy in question. She knelt down beside Jackson and shrugged her jacket off, putting it under Danny's head after the EMT took his helmet off.
"Hey Danny, how's it goin' buddy?" Crystal chuckled at the dazed looking boy as the EMT shone a flashlight in his eyes.
"Hey Criss, wait- why is there two of you? Do you have a twin?"
Crystal rolled her eyes playfully and snorted. One conversation caught her attention thought as she shifted her gaze to Lydia, who had just ran out to the field there.
"What?" The strawberry blonde asked when her boyfriend was staring at her mouth.
"It's just, uh- your lipstick."
Lydia then brought out a mirror from her bag and fixed her lipstick with her finger. "Oh, wonder how that happened,"
"I'll take it from here Miss, thanks for your help." The EMT brought Crystal's attention back to a bloody-nosed Danny. Crystal smiled back in response. "You gonna be okay, Danny?"
"Yeah mom, make sure to have the cookies ready when I get home." Danny informed her as she carefully lifted his head to grab her jacket, then placed his head back down. She chuckled then grabbed her bag and made her way to the parking lot, considering it was already after school hours.
When Crystal arrived home, she came to find that there was a note on the kitchen counter saying that her aunt wouldn't be home for dinner, and that she would be home at eleven. The brunette groaned as she plopped on the couch and flicked the T.V on, surfing through the channels.
When the girls phone buzzed in her back pocket, she almost jumped out of her seat on the couch due to the harshness of the vibration. "Holy Shit!" She just about screamed out loud.
FROM: Stuhlinski
I'm coming to pick you up, I have a plan for tonight.
Crystal furrowed her eyebrows but chuckled.
TO: Stuhlinski
If you wanted to go out on a date, you could've just asked;)
Not ten seconds later, there was a reply.
FROM: Stuhlinski
Ha ha, laugh it up, Thomson. I'm outside, move your cute little ass.
Crystal's face went red as she read that. She glanced at her butt and nodded in approval. At least her ass was cute. She switched off the TV, then grabbed her jacket that she had just gotten rid of not ten minutes earlier and shrugged it on.
When the girl got in to the boys jeep, she climbed in and smirked.
"My ass is cute? Thanks, I didn't know you were looking." Crystal grinned as Stiles face turned bright red.
"I hate you."
Stiles began driving off towards Scott's house.
"So, what's your master plan for McCall?" Crystal teased as she tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear.
"I'm gonna lock him up in his room," Was all the hazel-eyed boy said. Crystal scoffed.
"Wow, that must have taken a long time to think of." She muttered sarcastically.
When the boy only rolled his eyes, she let her thoughts drift to her and Lydia's conversation at lacrosse practice.
"Uh, Stiles. There's something I have to tell you."
This caught the boys attention. "What's wrong?" The boy furrowed his eyebrows as he waited for the girl to answer.
"Uh, it's about Scott..." The girls voice trailed off as they came to a stop outside the McCalls house. Crystal glanced up at the sky, it already being dark with stars scattering across the dark blue sky; the big bright full moon taunting them.
"Yeah?" The boy questioned in an annoyed tone as they stepped out from the jeep, Stiles grabbing a black duffle bag.
"Okay. So-" Crystal's voice was cut off when another feminine voice came in to ear shot as the two teenagers stepped in to the McCall house.
"Scott?"
A woman with black curly hair and clad in hospital scrubs walked around the corner, so this is Melissa McCall.
"Stiles..." The boy smiled innocently.
"Key?" Mrs. McCall furrowed her eyebrows in confusion.
"Yeah! I had one made, so..." The boy continued.
"Yeah that doesn't surprise me, it scares me; but doesn't surprise me." Melissa then looked over towards Crystal who was watching the two with an amused expression.
"Hello, I don't think we've met." Scott's mom smiled nicely towards the younger girl.
"Oh, uh... I'm Crystal Thomson," The brunette nodded in acknowledgment and saluted.
A look of realization crossed Melissa's face. "Oh! Your Jenna's niece, she talks about you a lot."
The girl just awkwardly smiled and breathed out a small laugh. "That would be me."
Stiles then dropped the black duffle bag on to the floor, the sound of clanging of metal coming from the bag.
"What is that?" Melissa questioned as she pointed at the bag. Crystal immediately turned to Stiles for answers.
"Uh- School project." The boy answered, Crystal nodded along.
"Hm... Guys, he's okay, right?"
"Who, Scott? Yeah, totally." Crystal answered.
"He just doesn't talk to me, not much anymore. Not like he used to."
Crystal frowned at the woman's words. She would hate to think what Melissa is going through right now. She knows that being a single parent is tough with a teenage kid; because her dad was.
Was.
"Well, he's had a bit of a rough week." Stiles informed Scott's mom.
Melissa nodded along, "Yeah, yeah I get it. Yeah... um, okay. Crystal it was lovely finally getting to meet you. You guys be careful tonight." Melissa started digging through her purse for her keys.
"You too, Melissa." Crystal smiled at Melissa.
"Full moon."
"What?" Crystal and Stiles said in unison.
"Uh, it's a full moon tonight. You should see how the ER gets, brings out all the nut jobs." Said Melissa. Crystal and Stiles both exhaled in relief and muttered 'oh'.
"You know, it's actually where they came up with the word 'lunatic'." Melissa then walked out of the house, leaving Crystal and Stiles alone.
She turned round to face him, ready to tell him what she was meaning to before she got interrupted. "Stiles-"
"Cmon, no time. We have to get this set up." Stiles then started jogging upstairs, leaving a very annoyed Crystal behind. She began climbing the stairs, following Stiles through the hallway.
"Fine, but when you find out just know that I tried-"
Crystal was interrupted yet again, when Stiles flicked on the light to reveal Scott sitting in the corner on a chair. "Oh my god!" Stiles yelled.
"Jesus, Scott! W-were you just sitting in the dark alone? That's all kinds of creepy." Crystal muttered as she walked deeper in to the room, taking a seat on his bed.
"Dude, you scared the hell out of me, your mom said you weren't home yet." Stiles dropped the duffle bag to the floor as Scott continued to stare at the boy in front of him. Crystal clicked her fingers in front of his face, earning no response.
"I came in through the window." Scott's deep voice made the small brunette jump back.
"Okay... Well let's get this set up." Stiles bent down and began opening the duffle bag. "Wait till you see what I bought."
"I'm fine."
Crystal snapped her head towards Scott and just raised her eyebrows.
"I'm just gonna lock the door and got to bed early tonight."
"You sure about that, Scott? 'Cos you've kinda got this serial killer look in your eyes and I'd rather not be murdered tonight." Crystal noticed how Scott's head turned towards her slowly.
"I'm fine. You should go now." He said lowly.
"Alright, we will leave. Right, okay will you just at least look in the bag and see what I bought? So, you know- maybe you use it, maybe you don't. Sound good?" Stiles piped up, taking Scott's attention from the brunette.
Scott got up from his chair slowly, walking over to the duffle bag and bending down. He grabbed the chains and held them up to his face.
"You think I'm gonna let you put these on, chain me up like a dog?" Scott questioned. Crystal took notice of how Stiles was fumbling with something in his back pocket.
"Actually, no." In one swift movement, Stiles grabbed Scott's arm and hand-cuffed him to the radiator. Crystal stood up from the bed and took her place next to Stiles.
"What the hell are you doing!" Scott growled as he tugged on the hand-cuff.
"Protecting you from yourself. And giving you some payback," Stiles glanced at Crystal who was smirking at the teen wolf.
"For making out with Lydia."
Stiles then stomped out of the room and took a seat outside the door, leaning against the wall. Crystal followed suit and took a seat next to him.
"I already knew."
Stiles whipped his head around and stared at the girl, who had her elbows resting on her knees.
"What?" The pale boy questioned.
"I tried to tell you. I saw them walking out of coaches office. I'm sorry." Crystal sent an apologetic smile towards him as he just stared at her.
"It's not your fault." He answered with a sigh.
"I talked to her about it. I told her how wrong she was for doing that to Allison... And also because I knew you would get hurt." Crystal fiddled with a loose string on her sweater as she could feel Stiles gaze burning holes in to the side of her face.
"I'm not that hurt. I'm just annoyed that after everything, he would do that to me. Everything's just so confusing, I-I don't know..." Stiles answered truthfully. Crystal faced him and put a comforting hand on his arm and rubbed it. He sent a genuine smile her way.
"Thanks."
She shook her head and waved it off.
"So, payback?" Crystal suggested.
Stiles smirked evilly.
🌙
Ten minutes later, Crystal and Stiles both walked in to the room, Stiles carrying a dog bowl with Scott's name on it.
"We brought you some water, Scotty." Crystal sassed as she leaned against the door frame, arms folded. Stiles poured a bottle of water in to the dog bowl whilst Crystal smirked, then placed it down on the floor. Stiles went to walk out when the bowl went soaring through the air and hit Stiles on the back, water drenching him.
"I'm gonna kill you!"
"You kissed her, Scott. You kissed Lydia. That's-- like probably the one girl-" Crystal placed a comforting hand on his shoulder, silently telling him to calm down. He took glance back at the girl and sighed. "You know, for the past three hours I've been thinkin' it's probably just the full moon. You know, he doesn't even know what he's doing and tomorrow he will be totally back to normal. He probably won't even remember what a complete dumbass he's been. A son of a bitch, a freakin' unbelievable piece of crap friend."
Crystal backed off a bit and resumed her position by the door, glaring holes in to Scott's head.
"She kissed me."
A wave of guilt hit Crystal in the stomach as she recalled the conversation she had with Lydia. If the redhead really didn't want to kiss him then she wouldn't have, but she did.
"What?" Stiles questioned. Scott started to smirk, knowing he was getting a reaction from Stiles.
"I didn't kiss her, she kissed me." Stiles walked past Crystal and out the door.
"She would've done a lot more too. You should've seen the way she had her hands all over me. She would have done anything I wanted, ANYTHING!"
"Shut the hell up, Scott! Your acting like a little boy." Crystal was surprised at her own words but she didn't regret it. He was starting to piss her off and she couldn't take it any more.
"Oh, Criss. Finally deciding to speak up? You knew all along didn't you, you knew that she kissed me."
"Shut up."
"Getting angry? Good. All those little daddy issues finally building up inside of you? Don't you just wanna get angry?" Scott was pushing all the right buttons as Crystal was more than ready to explode and rip his head off.
"Stop."
"Isn't it funny, how easy it is to get you angry? Your just a pathetic little girl, with no mommy or daddy to help you."
"STOP!"  Crystal screamed.
Momentarily, the lights in the room flickered, but for merely a split second. Scott glanced up at the light switch, his eyebrows raising.
Crystal felt a hand on her back. She then felt arms wrapping around her shoulders and ushering her out and sitting on her the floor.
Rage.
Rage was all she felt. A burning sensation stung at the girls eyes as Stiles tried to get her to look at him. He grabbed the sides of her face and tilted her chin up. When he succeeded. He saw something.
Her eyes where glossy with unshed tears.
Unshed tears filled with hate, grief and rage.
"Please, please don't cry." Stiles whispered to the girl, trying to soothe her of her pain.
For the first time in fourteen months, a tear slipped from the girls eye and rolled down her cheek as she tried not to blink.
Stiles swore he could feel his heart split in two.
Instantly, without thinking; the pale boy grabbed Crystal's head and brought it into his chest as she furiously wiped away at the tears threatening to spill from her chocolate brown eyes. When she felt a hand running through her hair she instantly calmed down, and nuzzled her face in to the boys chest, savoring the feeling of warmth. He smelled good. She wrapped her arms around his torso and tried to calm her breathing. She could hear Stiles heartbeat increase, and she was instantly reminded of the night at the high school, when they were in the locker together. Her arms were shaking with rage as she tried to resist the urge to stand up, walk in to Scott's room and strangle him with her bare hands. She knew that she couldn't do that.
As soon as Scott mentioned her parents, it was like a huge wave of unfelt emotions wrapped around her heart and squeezed until there was nothing left. Her blood boiled with anger and her eyes clouded with angry tears. She hated crying, the feeling of vulnerability and weakness only made the girl want to smash her fist through a wall.
For the first time in sixteen years, the girl poured her heart out on that hallway floor. She had never cried like that in her life. No words where needed to explain what the sixteen year old girl felt as she held on to Stiles for comfort. She had never cried like this, her dad always told her it was a sign of weakness.
Thinking about her father more made her want to do horrible things to the teenage boy in that room, nobody had spoke about her parents like that. Never.
She was angry. Angry at herself for being so weak and pathetic. Angry at herself for letting her guard down and crying like an idiot in her friends arms.
Stiles leaned his chin on her head as she continued to choke on her own sobs. He brushed away the hairs that had stuck to her wet cheek and tucked them behind her ears.
Crystal continued to wipe away at the water leaking from her eyes in frustrating wiped as Stiles held her in his arms. He could only comfort her at a time like this, he could only hold her and soothe her until she felt better. He knew it wouldn't get better. He knew that pain never really heals.
"Thank you." Crystal mumbled in to his jacket. He didn't answer, just smiled sadly for nobody to see as he continued to soothe the girl in his arms.
He made a promise to himself right in that moment that he would always be there for the brunette in his arms, no matter what.
No matter what.
🌙
"Stiles please let me out, it's the full moon I swear."
Crystal had stopped crying about ten minutes ago, the only emotion running through her veins was emptiness as she remained in the same position with Stiles for the past fifteen minutes. None of them seemed to have wanted to move. He continued to run his hands through her hair as she closed her eyes. She was glad to have Stiles as such a good friend, if he wasn't here she doesn't know what she would do.
"You know I wouldn't do any of this on purpose. Please Stiles let me out, it's starting to hurt. It's not like the first time, it's the full moon. It's Allison breaking up with me, and I know it's not just 'taking a break'. She broke up with me and it's killing me. I'm feeling completely hopeless. Please, Criss I'm sorry for saying that to you, I didn't mean it; just please let me out."
"We can't." Stiles mumbled in to Crystal's hair.
Scott began screaming, louder and louder as Stiles held Crystal closer to him, burying his head in her hair as he tried to drown out the noise. Crystal shut her eyes tight as she tried not to think about her best friend in pain, no matter what he said to her, he's still her friend.
All of a sudden, the noise came to a halt as the hallway filled with a dead silence. Crystal lifted her head up and shared a look with Stiles.
"Scott?" Crystal said as she stood up, Stiles following suit. They opened the door and saw that the window was lying wide open and the hand cuff that was once attached to the radiator and Scott, was lying on the floor in a pool of blood; no Scott.
Immediately they both sprinted out of the house and in to Stiles jeep, he wasted not one second and floored it down the street.
"Oh god, where do you think he's went?" Crystal questioned as she fumbled with her seat belt.
"I-I have no idea-"
Crystal took the time to glance at herself in the windshield mirror, taking in her appearance.
She wasn't as bad as she thought she would be, but her eyes where slightly red and her cheeks where a bit puffy. Not to mention that her hair was a tangled mess from when Stiles was running his hands through and fiddling with it. Thinking back to then made Crystal have a weird sensation in her stomach and her face began to heat up. She found herself wanting to be back in his arms. She quickly tied her hair up in a high pony. The brunette took a glance towards Stiles to see that his hands where nervously tapping the wheel. She placed her hand on his, catching his attention.
"We will find him, don't worry."
Stiles just nodded and sent a weak smile her way. She brought her hand back and she looked out the window, the trees blurring together as they drove quickly down another road.
Soon enough, the pair came across flashing lights and police cars along with ambulances. Stiles came to a stop and immediately clambered out of the jeep, Crystal following.
Oh god, what if Scott done this?
"Dad?" Stiles yelled.
"Dad?" He grabbed a police officer with his back turned to them and spun him around, although no Mr. Stilinski.
The pair then came across a body being wheeled out on a gurney, his burnt and hand hanging out of the sheet. Crystal saw the sadness welling in Stiles eyes as he thought the worst for his father.
"Stiles?" A voice came from behind them, Crystal turned around and came face to face with the Sheriff.
"What are you doing here?" He questioned, but Stiles tackled him in a heart warming hug. A pang went through Crystal's chest as she watched the two hug.
When the two stopped hugging, he turned towards Crystal who was standing there awkwardly glancing around. Mr. Stilinski glanced at his son, then averted his gaze to Crystal.
"Ah, you must be Crystal. We haven't actually met yet but I believe you where the one at the video store?" Sheriff asked the girl.
"Yeah... That's me." She waved awkwardly at the man.
"Well, it's nice to finally meet you, Criss. Alright, you two get home now, I've got to deal with this. See you at home kiddo." Sheriff Stilinski said to his son.
"See you later, Dad." Stiles replied.
The two teenagers returned back to the jeep and sat in silence for a few moments.
"You think this was the Alpha?" Crystal questioned as she looked at the the ambulances.
"Who else would it be?" The boy replied simply.
Her phone buzzed in her pocket to see that she got a text from an unknown number.
FROM: UNKNOWN
I found Scott, he's at home. Thank me later.
-Derek
Crystal frowned. Wasn't he dead? And how the hell did Derek Hale get her number? Crystal showed the text to Stiles and his reaction very much mirrored her own.
"How did he get your number?" He questioned and Crystal rolled her eyes.
"We thought he was dead and you only ask how he got my number?" Crystal raised an eyebrow.
Stiles just scoffed and returned to looking at the street as he drove calmly.
"So Scott's alright then?" Stiles asked, a bit of venom lacing his voice. Crystal sighed.
"Yep."
Crystal frowned. It had suddenly turned awkward.
When the blue jeep pulled in to Crystal's drive way, she didn't move to take her seat belt off.
"I just wanted to say thank you. You know, for being there for me. You really helped me." Crystal chuckled and watched as Stiles cracked a smile.
"Criss, don't worry about it, I'll always be there for you." The boy spoke truthfully. Crystal felt a warmth spread through her chest as she smiled, but it faded as soon as she thought about everything that happened today.
"I'm sorry about, ya' know, Scott and Lydia... I know how much she means to you." Crystal sent him an apologetic smile.
Stiles sighed. "You want to know something? I'm not that mad at the fact she made out with him, I'm just mad that Scott would do that to me since he's my best friend, he knew how I felt about her."
Crystal furrowed her eyebrows.
"What do you mean 'felt'?" Crystal regretted asking as soon as the words slipped her mouth, but awaited his answer anyway.
"I don't know... Everything's just confusing right now." He answered honestly, staring at her. She felt her heart beat quicken. Does this mean that he doesn't like Lydia anymore? Crystal unbuckled her seat belt. She leaned over and wrapped her arms around his neck, bringing him in for a hug. She felt Stiles stiffen, but he seemed to snap out of it when he wrapped his arms around the girl's frame, squeezing tightly.
"Thank you again, Stiles." A wave of confidence washed over her as she brought her lips to his cheek and pecked it. She heard him take a sharp intake of breath. Crystal then quickly untangled herself and opened the jeep door, getting out and walking towards the door of her house. Not before throwing a quick glance over her shoulder at a smiling Stiles as he fist pumped the air, then drove away. She rolled her eyes and smiled. The brunette unlocked her door and walked in to her empty house.
Quickly changing in to some comfortable pyjamas, the girl found herself questioning her feelings towards a certain teenage boy.
