"Avada Kedavra!"

It felt like all the air pulled itself from Y/n's lungs, she was surrounded in a green light and she felt her body fall to the floor.

But everything went black before she hit the cold flagstones.

She woke up and found herself laying in a bright mist, though it was not like a mist she had ever experienced before. Her surroundings were not hidden by cloudy vapour; rather the cloudy vapour had not yet formed into the surroundings.

The floor on which she lay seemed to be white, neither warm nor cold, but simply there, a flat, blank something on which to be. She sat up. Her body appeared unscathed, the silver coloured scars that littered her body had faded to the point where they were almost unnoticeable.

Then a noise reached her through the unformed nothingness that surrounded her: the small, soft thumpings of something that flapped, flailed and struggled. It was a pitiful noise, yet also slightly indecent. She had the uncomfortable feeling that she was eavesdropping on something furtive, shameful.

She slowly and carefully stood up, looking around. Was she in some great Room of Requirement? The longer she looked, the more there was to see. A great, domed entrance way glittered high above her in sunlight.

All was hushed and still, except for those odd thumping and whimpering noises coming from somewhere close by in the mist ...Y/n turned slowly on the spot, and her surroundings seemed to invent themselves before her eyes.

A wide open space, bright and clean, a garden larger by far than the grounds of Hogwarts, with that clear, domed entrance and a cream water fountain flowing silent water down its side.

It was quite empty. She was the only person there, except for –she paused.

"Welcome, pup." A familiar voice called.

In the distance was a figure of a man, his stature was recognisable, and he drew closer she could make out the shabby clothes, the mousy brown hair and the pale silver scars.

"Dad!" She screamed, she ran towards him. Remus held his arms open for his daughter. She crushed into her dad's body and gripped on him so hard in fear he was going to disappear into the mist.

Remus looked down at his daughter, her face was buried into his chest and she clung onto the back of his blazer, it reminded him of her childhood. But he couldn't help but feel a pang of sadness, she didn't deserve to be here, she was far too young.

"What is this place?" She asked when she finally pulled away. Remus' face was plain, like he was trying to think of what to say to his little girl.

"Let's go have a little sit down, shall we?" He prompted, he rest an arm around her shoulder and he led Y/n to the nearest bench opposite the pearly fountain.

"What happened?" She asked when they sat down. Her heart was pounding in her chest, she yearned for answers. Where was she? Why was she here? And where is Fred?

"I'm sorry to say this, pup," sighed Remus, "During the battle, we... you... died."

It suddenly felt like she couldn't breathe and her thoughts were spinning a million miles an hour. How had she died? When did she die? And where is Fred?"

"If I'm... dead, are you...?"

Remus gave her a small smile and slowly nodded his head. "I'm sorry, pup. You are far too young."

"How did I die?" She asked, her mind was calming down, she took slow deep breaths and looked at her dad with a curious expression.

"I don't know that pup, can you try to remember?"

Y/n closed her eyes and squinted them as hard as she could to try to remember. She saw visions of her hug with Fred... the contorted look of Rookwood's face... the green light darted towards her... the air leaving her lungs... and her fall...

"Rookwood," she muttered, "It was Rookwood, he sent the killing curse at us."

"Us?" Questioned Remus.

"Me and Fred... we were hugging. Is he dead too?"

"It depends on where the curse was hit, but I would assume so." Remus answered carefully, "The rest of us who died in the battle and just through the arch, care to come with?"

Y/n nodded and they silently stood up and walked over to the domed entrance.

"How did you die?" Y/n whispered

"I lost a duel with Dolohov, I died to make sure your mum would survive."

Her thoughts suddenly cast over to Teddy and Tonks. They would be finding out of their deaths at any moment. Tears welled in her eyes as she imagined her brothers reaction to seeing her lifeless body. Her thoughts then took her to George. If Fred had died with her, George would be alone, she hoped that it was just her hit with the curse, so Fred and George could look after each other.

"Dad.." she asked quietly.

"Yes, pup?" He replied, looking down at her face.

"Are uncle Sirius and uncle James here too?"

"They are in the afterlife somewhere." He shrugged, "But if I know them, they will be waiting for our entrance." He motioned at the archway.

They were close to the arch by now. Y/n couldn't see what was beyond it. She had to trust her dad, so she gripped onto his arm.

They walked through in silence, a large hall suddenly materialised in front of her eyes. It was at least triple the size of the Great Hall, bright windows lined the walls and pale rays of sun seeped through them.

In the room stood about fifty people. They were all look around the hall in awe and wonder as their minds made the realisation of their deaths. But Y/n could immediately see a tall figure with a mop of ginger hair. Y/n's heart pounded with both glee and sorrow.

"FRED!" She yelled. He suddenly turned around and his eyes went wide when his sight landed on her body. He couldn't help but smile the same dopey smile as he always did when she was near.

Y/n let go of her dad's arm and she and Fred ran towards each other. As she ran she could hear a familiar voice calling out

"Oi Moony! What happened to you?!"

But she didn't look who said it, she collided into Fred and she picked her up and twisted her around in the air.

"I'm so glad to have you here, darling." Fred whispered, "my first thought was if you were hit too."

"I was," she half laughed, "I'm sorry about your death. We didn't even get married!"

"I'm sorry about your death too," chuckled Fred, "I'm sure we can get married up here, if not I will just call you my wife!"

"Then you'll be my husband!" She smiled back. She felt calm again, she was at peace.

"I think there's a couple of people waiting for you." Fred smiled as he nudged over to the group of four people, three men and a woman, smiling at the pair.

"Then you're coming with me." She smiled, Y/n held onto Fred's hand as they walked over to her dad and his friends. Fred's heart immediately pounded when he saw three of the marauders smiling at them both.

There stood her dad, Sirius,  James, her godfather and his wife, Lily.

She didn't know who to hug first so she ran to James and she threw her arms around her godfather.

"Merlin's beard, you've grown up a lot!" James gawked at her, who was up to his shoulder in height.

"I meannnnn," she dragged, "I was two when you died."

"Okay okay," he sighed, "I can't believe I missed your whole life! Some Godfather I am!"

"It's not your fault, Uncle Prongs!" She smiled, "I guess Voldemort got us both. I'm aloud to say that up here, right?" She asked which made everyone have a laugh.

"Yes you can," Remus smiled.

"I guess he did then," James grinned, "I finally get to spent quality time with my favourite goddaughter!"

"Only goddaughter, I can't be that good if you had to die on me." Y/n coughed, even she couldn't help smirk whilst James and Sirius had to cling onto each other with laughter.

"Seventeen years we've been dead and it's ruined Potter's sense of humour." Sighed Lily as she watched the two men nearly rolling on the floor. Y/n and Lily exchanged a quick hug and had made small talk whilst they waited.

When they eventually finished Sirius, James and Remus talked to each other in silent whispers, and making quick glances at Fred. And they straightened up and looked at Fred, trying to hide the smirks on the faces.

"Seeing as Wormtail is not up here with us," James stated

"We're looking for a forth marauder." Sirius said pointedly, smiling over at Fred.

Fred's mouth dropped open as he glanced between the marauders and Y/n, excitement was growing wildly on his face, like he was about to burst with glee.

"Yes!" Fred said loudly, then coughed and added, "I mean... I would be honoured."

"And I heard from Padfoot that you are a animagus?" Asked James excitedly, practically bouncing from foot to foot.

"You mean, I can change up here?!" Fred asked, to which both James and Sirius nodded.

James changed into a stag, Sirius turned into Padfoot and Fred promptly changed into a fox and the three of them started bounding around the room.

"Dad, will we have to transform, now we are dead?" Y/n asked, hoping that the wolf died with her.

"I don't know pup, we will have to wait to find out."

By the time Fred, James and Sirius transformed back, they and Remus bustled off to a quiet part of the room to discuss Fred's nickname and their first prank in the afterlife.

"That's it." Lily sighed, "We've lost them forever."

"I figured," Y/n answered, "Fancy some firewhiskey? Surely there must be the good stuff here."

"Me and you are going to get on very well." Lily laughed.

But before they could get to the bar, the ends Lily's and Y/n's fingers were fading and quickly spreading across their arms and bodies.

"Anyone else just...fading?" Sirius shouted from the bench, she could see that the four boys were fading too.

And before they knew it, they were back on Earth. Harry was standing in the middle of them, his eyes were closed. Y/n suddenly felt very weak, and tired, it was a very strange feeling being back on Earth.

Harry knew it had happened because he heard slight movements around him that suggested frail bodies shifting their footing on the earthy, twig-strewn ground that marked the outer edge of the Forest.

He opened his eyes and looked around. They were neither ghosts nor truly flesh, he could see that.
They were less substantial than their living bodies, but much more than ghosts, they moved towards him, and on each face, there was the same loving smile.

James was the same height as Harry. He was wearing the clothes in which he had died, and his hair was untidy and ruffled, and his glasses were a little lopsided, like Mr Weasley's.

Sirius was tall and handsome, and younger by far than Harry had seen him in life. He loped with an easy grace, his hands in his pockets and a grin on his face.

Lupin was younger too, and much less shabby, and his hair was thicker and darker. He looked happy to be back in this familiar place, a scene of so many adolescent wanderings.

Y/n and Fred hadn't changed, being the newest and the most recent to die, they were the same as Harry remembered from two hours ago. He noticed Y/n's scars had faded, she looked freer. But Harry knew they were worrying about George and Teddy.

Lily's smile was the widest of all. She pushed her long hair back as she drew close to him, and her green eyes, so like his, searched his face hungrily as though she would never be able to look at him enough.

"You've been so brave." She whispered.

Harry could not speak. His eyes feasted on her, and he thought that he would like to stand and look at her forever, and that would be enough.

"You are nearly there," said James. "Very close. We are ... so proud of you."

"Does it hurt?" The childish question had fallen from Harry's lips before he could stop it.

"Dying? Not at all," said Sirius.

"Quicker and easier than falling asleep." Y/n added after.

"And he will want it to be quick. He wants it over," said Lupin.

"I didn't want you to die," Harry said. These words came without his volition. "Any of you. I'm sorry." He addressed Y/n, Remus and Fred more than any of them, beseeching him. "– right after you'd two got engaged ... Y/n, Fred, I'm sorry."

"I am sorry too," said Fred. "Sorry I will never marry her... but I had to do what is right, wanted to make a world where it was safe for everyone. Just make sure George is okay..."

Harry nodded

A chilly breeze that seemed to emanate from the heart of the Forest lifted the hair at Harry's brow. He knew that they would not tell him to go, that it would have to be his decision.

"You'll stay with me?" He asked.

"Until the very end," said James.

"They won't be able to see you?" asked Harry.

"We are part of you," said Sirius. "Invisible to anyone else."

Harry looked at his mother.

"Stay close to me," he said quietly. And he set off.

The Dementors' chill did not overcome him; he passed through it with his companions, and they acted like Patronuses to him, and together they marched through the old trees that grew closely together, their branches tangled, their roots gnarled and twisted underfoot. Harry clutched the Cloak tightly around him in the darkness, traveling deeper and deeper into the Forest, with no idea where exactly Voldemort was, but sure that he would find him.

Beside him, making scarcely a sound, walked James, Sirius, Lupin, Lily, Y/n, and Fred, and their presence was his courage, and the reason he was able to keep putting one foot in front of the other. His body and mind felt oddly disconnected now, his limbs working without conscious instruction, as if he were a passenger, not a driver, in the body he was about to leave.

The dead who walked beside him through the Forest was much more real to him now than the living back at the castle: Ron, Hermione, Ginny, and all the others were the ones who felt like ghosts as he stumbled and slipped towards the end of his life, towards Voldemort ...A thud and a whisper: some other living creature had stirred close by.

Harry stopped under the Cloak, peering around, listening, and his mother and father, Lupin and Sirius stopped too.

"Someone there," came a rough whisper close at hand. "He's got an Invisibility Cloak. Could it be–?"

Two figures emerged from behind a nearby tree: their wands flared, and Harry saw Yaxley and Dolohov peering into the darkness, directly at the place Harry, his mother and father, Y/n, Fred and Sirius and Lupin stood. Apparently, they could not see anything.

"Definitely heard something," said Yaxley. "Animal, d'you reckon?"

"That headcase Hagrid kept a whole bunch of stuff in here," said Dolohov, glancing over his shoulder.

Yaxley looked down at his watch.

"Time's nearly up. Potter's had his hour. He's not coming."

"And he was sure he'd come! He won't be happy."

"Better go back," said Yaxley. "Find out what the plan is now."

He and Dolohov turned and walked deeper into the Forest. Harry followed them, knowing that they would lead him exactly where he wanted to go. He glanced sideways, and his mother smiled at him, and his father nodded encouragement.

They had travelled on mere minutes when Harry saw light ahead, and Yaxley and Dolohov stepped out into a clearing that Harry knew had been the place where the monstrous Aragog had once lived. The remnants of his vast web were there still, but the swarm of descendants he had spawned had been driven out by the Death Eaters, to fight for their cause.

A fire burned in the middle of the clearing, and its flickering light fell over a crowd of completely silent, watchful Death Eaters. Some of them were still masked and hooded, others showed their faces. Two giants sat on the outskirts of the group, casting massive shadows over the scene, their faces cruel, rough-hewn like a rock. Rowle was dabbing at his bleeding lip. He saw Lucius Malfoy, who looked defeated and terrified, and Narcissa, whose eyes were sunken and full of apprehension.

Every eye was fixed upon Voldemort, who stood with his head bowed, and his white hands folded over the Elder Wand in front of him. He might have been praying, or else counting silently in his mind, and Harry, standing still on the edge of the scene, thought absurdly of a child counting in a game of hide and seek. Behind his head, still swirling and coiling, the great snake Nagini floated in her glittering, charmed cage, like a monstrous halo. When Dolohov and Yaxley rejoined the circle, Voldemort looked up.

"No sign of him, my Lord," said Dolohov. Voldemort's expression did not change. The red eyes seemed to burn in the firelight. Slowly, he drew the Elder Wand between his long fingers.

"My Lord-" Bellatrix had spoken: she sat closest to Voldemort, dishevelled, her face a little bloody but otherwise unharmed. Voldemort raised his hand to silence her, and she did not speak another word but eyed him in worshipful fascination.

"I thought he would come," said Voldemort in his high, clear voice, his eyes on the leaping flames. "I expected him to come."

Nobody spoke. They seemed as scared as Harry, whose heart was now throwing itself against his ribs as though determined to escape the body he was about to cast aside. His hands were sweating as he pulled off the Invisibility Cloak and stuffed it beneath his robes, with his wand. He did not want to be tempted to fight.

"I was, it seems ... mistaken," said Voldemort.

"You weren't." Harry said it as loudly as he could, with all the force he could muster: he did not want to sound afraid. The Resurrection Stone slipped from between his numb fingers and out of the corner of his eyes he saw his parents, Sirius, Lupin, Y/n and Fred vanish as he stepped forward into the firelight.

The six of them returned to the afterlife with a gasp, they were all panting and wide mouthed. Tears flooded Lily and James eyes. The group buried them in a hug.

Time seemed to pass by quicker in the afterlife, they were able to watch down onto Earth, they watched as Harry defeated Voldemort and then promptly changed to look over George and Teddy. Both their cheeks were tear stained and red, Y/n's heart hurt as she watched her big brother and best friend crying over her death.

Lily was true to her word, Fred and the marauders spend most of their days causing havoc over the afterlife. So Y/n and Lily often drunk from a bottle of firewhiskey

But Y/n and Remus never turned into a werewolves again.
