I can't remember how I replied to Pei Hao that day.

It seems like I didn't say anything. Should I have begged him not to argue with Jin Yu? That would have seemed unfair to him.

Since, as I've said, Pei Hao and I have no more connection, why should I demand anything from him?

On a winter evening, snow fell gently on my head. There wasn't much wind in the neighborhood, but the cold was penetrating to the bone. I was only outside for less than twenty minutes, and I was already freezing. I didn't know how long Pei Hao had been waiting for me outside.

Me: Where's your car?

Pei: Do you think I can drive with this leg?

Me: You should go back quickly.

Pei: Wait a little longer, I'll leave after you go upstairs.

Me: ...

I knew it was pointless to persuade him, the best way was for me to hurry home, and then he would leave.

I made something to eat at home. I don't know why, but I felt like that person sitting downstairs was affecting me. I was afraid to open the curtains and find him still sitting there.

Then I wouldn't know what to do.

Honestly, I wasn't sure if I could resist this kind of trick.

Luckily, when I opened the window, he wasn't sitting in his usual spot.

It was already dark, the old yellow streetlight faintly illuminated the path ahead. Most of the office workers had already returned home, drinking warm soup and watching TV. But under the streetlight, on the snowy ground, there was a figure standing faintly, I could only see his back.

He leaned on a crutch, dragging a heavy leg, moving forward step by step, each step seemed to be treading on my heart.

Remembering how he used to be so confident and imposing on the basketball court, it was hard to believe he could now walk so slowly and unsteadily, like an old man.

I clenched my fist tightly, my nails digging into my skin. I tried to calm myself down, otherwise, I might run downstairs to support him in the next second.

He didn't come every day, but when he did, he would stay for over three hours. It happened to be the coldest month of the winter, around -5 or -6 degrees Celsius. He would just sit there, not saying anything to me, and then leave silently.

I wished he would say something to me, so I could get angry and make him leave.

But now he had learned not to provoke me, and I found I was powerless against him.

Why was he so stubborn?

And so, when Pei Hao continuously tested my patience for weeks, I created this post.

After Pei Hao told me about hitting Cheng Yi, I sent a text message to Jin Yu:

Pei Hao said he only hit Cheng Yi twice, and Cheng Yi was fine when he left. But you said Cheng Yi ended up in the emergency room. Is there some misunderstanding in between?

Not long after, I received a call. Jin Yu's voice was icy: "He said he only hit him twice? But two hits left him with injuries all over his body?"

"Injuries all over his body?" I stiffened, unsure of how to respond.

From what I've known of Pei Hao over the past five years, he wouldn't lie about something like this.

But Jin Yu's tone didn't sound like he was lying either.

"His hands, legs, back, and even his face were injured. He had cuts on his face!" Jin Yu's anger flared up, and I was grateful we weren't talking face to face.

Cuts on his face? I was even more puzzled.

The stories from these two are so different.

It doesn't seem likely that splashing water in a hot pot restaurant would lead to getting cuts on the face.

So what was going on with Jin Yu's version of events?

"Did Cheng Yi say that Pei Hao cut his face?" I thought I should start with Cheng Yi.

There was silence on the other end for a while. Jin Yu finally spoke with a hint of helplessness, "He said he tripped himself..."

"What?" I was getting more and more confused by this plot.

I originally thought the most likely scenario was that Cheng Yi was lying, but now he's saying he tripped himself???

"He's intentionally defying me," Jin Yu suddenly chuckled self-deprecatingly, "The doctor said these injuries were definitely inflicted by someone."

"How did you confirm it was Pei Hao?" I asked.

"I reviewed the surveillance footage from the street. He did hit Xiao Yi, that much is certain," Jin Yu paused for a moment and continued, "But there's a gap in the video, and that's why I didn't mark Pei Hao's face."

"Because you're not entirely sure it was him?" I was finally starting to piece things together.

"Yes," Jin Yu responded, "So I'm still investigating."

"Based on what I know about Pei Hao, he wouldn't deny something he did." I was sincere.

Jin Yu hesitated for a moment and asked, "Do you believe him?"

"Yes." I believed that he wouldn't seek such strong revenge.

"Alright, I'll let you know once I find out the truth."

Hung up the phone, I fell onto the bed, what a mess, it's like I'm in a suspenseful thriller, exhausting me completely.

With Cheng Yi's fearless and reckless personality, it's normal for him to have other enemies.

My intuition tells me it wasn't Pei Hao who did it, and I hope it wasn't him, otherwise, my first five years would have been a waste.

Not long ago, I finally finished my English exam and got a decent score. Whether I can catch up with the summer application depends on this round.

I have to thank myself for seriously studying for the English Level 6 exam in college. Otherwise, I probably wouldn't have passed.

Continuing on.

About a month later, Jin Yu invited me out for dinner.

He said he found out that Cheng Yi's face wasn't scratched by Pei Hao, it was done intentionally by someone else. He was apologizing specifically for that incident.

When he came, he was carrying a large gift box, black in color and exquisitely wrapped.

"This gift box is my apology to Cheng Yi," Jin Yu solemnly handed me the gift box and said, "I chose a crowded place today so you can splash water on me if you want."

He even pointed to the cup of water on the table.

I laughed and cried at the same time, "What are you apologizing for that he did?"

I can still differentiate between right and wrong, Cheng Yi is Cheng Yi, Jin Yu is Jin Yu.

And besides, I'm not the kind of person who seeks revenge. Since he's been punished too, I'll let it go, I just don't want to have anything to do with him.

"It's because I indulged him... being an elder brother and a father, I blame myself for not managing him well," Jin Yu frowned and said seriously, "I hope this will help you feel better, because I truly consider you a friend."

If you really wanted to manage him well, shouldn't you make him take responsibility for his own mistakes? What's the point of apologizing for the mistakes he made?

That's just how he is.

Since Jin Yu apologized sincerely, I replied sincerely, "If you really don't want to indulge him anymore, you shouldn't have come on his behalf today..."

Jin Yu poured a glass of wine, downed it in one gulp, and after a moment of silence, he looked at me, struggling to find words, "Because he has nothing, this is the only thing I can give him."

I was puzzled. Isn't Cheng Yi your family's young master? How can he have nothing?

"It doesn't matter," Jin Yu saw my perplexed expression and waved his hand, saying lightly, "He had some misunderstandings about you before, and I lied to him, said I was pursuing you."

"Why?"

Why would you lie to your brother and tell him you're pursuing me?

A strange thought began to take shape in my mind, but I still wasn't quite sure.

Jin Yu's expression darkened, a complex look on his face. He had another drink and lowered his head, remaining silent for a long time.

So long that I thought he was drunk.

After a while, he raised his head, tapped the gift box with one hand, and reverted to his usual carefree demeanor, "I've thought about it for a long time, didn't know what to give you. Open it and see if you like it."

Since Jin Yu didn't want to say, I didn't ask further.

"Okay, I'll accept the gift. We'll save the water splashing for next time."

I joked as I opened the gift box, revealing a black box inside. Upon opening the wooden box, a neatly arranged set of brushes, ink, paper, and inkstone was revealed.

It was a heartfelt and expensive gift.

"Thank you, it's a very special gift." I was pleasantly surprised, "Although my calligraphy is a mess, I can practice and improve."

"I thought since you're going abroad, I'd give you something from China to take with you," Jin Yu smiled with a hint of playfulness in his eyes, "Otherwise, you won't have anything to remind you of home."

I nodded repeatedly, "You're very thoughtful, thank you."

That day, Jin Yu drank a lot of alcohol. At first, we talked about his plans to study abroad, then we talked about our industry. Everything was normal, just like longtime friends chatting about anything and everything.

As the night wore on, I thought he was getting quite drunk, so I suggested we call it a night. He didn't agree, though. He held onto me and kept refilling his own glass.

Seeing him swaying, I had a feeling he was already drunk.

Just as I was thinking about how to persuade Jin Yu to go home, he suddenly asked, "That Pei... Pei Hao, how did you two break up?"

I didn't want to explain too much, so I replied casually, "Our personalities didn't match."

"I think you're just brushing me off," Jin Yu raised an eyebrow and looked at me with an air of determination, "I won't give up until you tell me.

I gave in.

"Because he didn't like me. He liked someone else."

Jin Yu was full of question marks, "He didn't like you, but he still fought for you after the breakup?"

My mood started to become irritable, and I said in a low voice, "When I liked him, he didn't like me."

"Well, he must have been blind," Jin Yu said as he poured another glass of wine and drank it all in one go.

"Don't drink anymore," I tried to stop him, but he used his hand to open the bottle.

Jin Yu reeked of alcohol, his eyes devoid of light, murmuring to himself, "The old man is about to go... those jackals and tigers have come out. I just wanted... to rest for one night."

"Alright, you rest," I understood, he just wanted someone to vent to tonight, and he wouldn't leave until he finished venting.

"Too difficult," Jin Yu muttered to himself.

In my heart, I sighed. I hadn't expected that this person who seemed so confident and enviable would also experience such moments of despair.

Perhaps some people are like this, always wearing armor, appearing invincible, you think they're tough, but who knows what they've gone through to get to this point.

It was clear that Jin Yu had been going through some unhappy things lately. I patted his back and comforted him, "It will all pass."

"I can't get over it," Jin Yu shook his head. By the time he looked at me again, his eyes were red. He patted his chest and said, "It's here... in my heart."

I looked at the hand pointing to his heart, pondering who he meant?

Since I'd known Jin Yu, his emotions had only ever been swayed by one person.

My suspicion was growing stronger.

"If you can't get over it, why force yourself to?" I asked.

"You wouldn't understand," Jin Yu's gaze drifted into the distance, his eyes unfocused, "He's still young. He'll realize what he truly wants in the future."

"What if he already knows what he wants now?" I inquired.

Jin Yu suddenly seemed to remember something and chuckled foolishly, "He said the same thing."

"Some things can be settled in the present, why worry so much about the future?" I said.

"Whether it's tradition or rules, if two people like each other, they should be together."

.....

He listened to me quietly, not saying a word. When I looked at him again, he was already sleeping with his head on the table.

Leaving me baffled, I didn't know how to arrange things for him.

If I took him home, Cheng Yi might tear me apart when he found out.

Sending him home? I didn't even know where his home was...

Finally, with no other option, I called Cheng Yi.

He arrived quickly, wearing sleep pants on his legs.

He must be really anxious if he was wearing that. What else could I do to his brother?

"He's had too much to drink, he's talking nonsense, take him home," I pointed at the motionless Jin Yu, signaling them to leave.

I really didn't want to see Cheng Yi.

He looked at me in surprise, as if he couldn't believe that I would actually return his brother to him.

He was skeptical, "Why did you call me here?"

I said, "I only know your number, who else could I call?"

Cheng Yi's face still had four big words written on it: Can't believe it!

"I said we're just friends!" Seeing his expression, I knew he was still misunderstanding. Anxiously, I blurted out, "Whatever he said about pursuing me, it's all a lie."

He was even more surprised, staring at me as if he wanted to confirm it again.

"We... are... just... friends," I repeated each word.

He looked deflated, stuttering, "Then that time, at the hot pot restaurant, I..."

"Go back." I interrupted him, waved my hand at him to indicate I was leaving.

He lowered his head begrudgingly, looking somewhat embarrassed. I noticed the two fierce scars behind his right cheek. He really was capable of getting into fights.

Seeing him in such a disheveled state, wearing sleep pants, I suddenly didn't dislike him as much.

Every time he met me before, he was dressed up, arrogant and disdainful. Maybe it was all a façade. The person today, looking a bit lost, was more like a college student.

Watching the two of them walk away, I thought, perhaps they do like each other.
