It was a brand new day and Niko is still on his journey to Saffron city in hopes of obtaining his next Badge. But today, he's decided to take a break from traveling and enjoy the day.
Niko: Ah! He sighed after finishing his juice. Man, when was the last time we sat down and enjoyed a good meal?
Eevee: Vee. (Too long) Eevee sighed happily.
Duplica: It's nice to take breaks from time to time.
Niko:.....
Duplica: Huh? Niko? What's wrong you look kind of glum. She pointed out.
Niko: Huh? Oh, it's nothing. It's just, I'm thinking about what Ash might be doing right now.
Duplica: Ash? That's your friend from your hometown, right?
Niko: Yeah. I kinda got a head start on him. He was the one who inspired me to go on a journey. I wonder where he is. He said looking up at the sky.
Elsewhere...another group of friends were stopping on their long journey for lunch.
Misty: Haaa... Misty sighed deeply.
Brock: Misty, lunch is all set! Come and get it. Brock said.
Misty: No thanks, I'm not hungry. She said down in the dumps.
Ash: What's up Misty? You've been this way for a while. Are you still bummed about your match with Wave?
Brock: Aah! Brock was surprised by Ash's bluntness.
Misty: Sort of...Hmm. Haaa. She sighed again.
Brock: This is worse than I thought.💧 That battle must have really gotten to her.
Ash: Yeah. I'm getting kinda worried.💧
Flashback, back when the others were in Cerulean City.
Ash and Wave were about to begin their battle.
Wave: So, Ash, how does a two on two battle sound?
Ash: Sounds just fine to me! Let's go!
Wave: Great attitude. I'll start off with Seaking!
Ash: A Seaking?
Pokédex: Seaking, the Goldfish Pokémon and the evolved form of Goldeen. In the autumn spawning season, they can be seen swimming powerfully up rivers and creeks.
Ash: This could be tough.
Wave: Seaking can hold its own in any battle. So hit me with all you got, Ash.
Seaking: Seaking. (Yeah)
Ash: Okay. Then I choose Butterfree!
Butterfree: Freeee!
Wave: A Butterfree. It's got air superiority. But you can handle it right, Seaking?
Seaking: Sea! (Absolutely)
Wave: Seaking use Peck! Seaking dashes through the water and leaps out.
Ash: Butterfree, dodge it! The Bug dodges by flying to the left. Use Stun Spore! Butterfree sprays the spores over Seaking.
Wave: Seaking! Seaking was paralyzed. Quick dive underwater! Seaking goes down and comes up much better. Not bad, Ash. But you haven't seen anything yet. Seaking, Horn Attack. Seaking dives underwater.
Misty: I wonder what Seaking is gonna do.
Daisy: No idea.
Violet: He doesn't use Seaking that much, so we have no clue.
Wave:.....Now! Seaking jumps out of the water and tackles Butterfree.
Ash: Ah, Butterfree! The Bug type falls on the small surface. Are you okay, Butterfree?
Butterfree: Freee! (Yes)
Ash: Okay, use Whirlwind! Butterfree flapped it's wings as hard as it could which sent it crashing into the other side of the pool. Now finish it with Tackle! Butterfree charged and hit Seaking.
Wave: Seaking, are you okay? The Water type floated back to the surface unconscious.
Ash: Alright, way to go Butterfree! Ash cheered.
Pikachu: Pika pika! (Great job)
Wave: Seaking, return. You did your best Seaking. Get some rest.
Lily: Wow. He beat Seaking. Your friends not bad.
Misty: He got lucky. Anyone can beat a Seaking like that. She said upset.
Wave: Now, Vaporeon! Make a splash!
Pokédex: Vaporeon, the Bubble Jet Pokémon and the evolved form of Eevee. Its cell structure is similar to water molecules. It will melt away and become invisible in water.
Ash: You can still battle, right Butterfree? Butterfree nods. Right! Start with Sleep Powder!
Wave: Vaporeon, dive! Vaporeon jumps in the water to avoid the attack.
Ash: It went underwater. Ash groaned.
Misty: That Vaporeon looks really strong. I don't see how Ash can beat that Pokémon.
Wave: Vaporeon, Water Gun! Vaporeon appeared out of the water and shot down Butterfree and into the water.
Ash: Butterfree! His Pokémon was knocked out.
Wave: How about it, Ash? Wanna keep going?
Ash: Err! Pikachu, are you ready?
Pikachu: Pika! (Yep)
Wave: An Electric type? Vaporeon, this might be a real challenge.
Vaporeon: Vaporeon! (Bring it) It said excited.
Ash: Pikachu, use Thundershock! The Mouse shot out electricity.
Wave: Vaporeon use Surf! Vaporeon jumps in the water and summons a massive tidal wave that blocks the Thundershock.
Ash: Pikachu, look out! Pikachu wiped out and fell into the water.
Wave: Quick use Quick Attack before Pikachu can recover.
Vaporeon swiftly tackles Pikachu from all directions at fast speed.
Ash: Pikachu, quick you gotta use Thundershock! Pikachu lets loose it's attack, however Vaporeon jumps out of the water in time. Oh no! Pikachu you have to get outta there!
Pikachu tries to swim out of the water. Wave had different plans though.
Wave: Sorry, Ash. Vaporeon, use Ice Beam! Vaporeon fires it's attack directly at Pikachu.
Ash: Pikachu! Ash cried.
The Ice Beam hit the water causing a splash that quickly freezes over. Everyone watched in shock.
Ash: Pikachu. Ash was downcast.
Pikachu: Pikachu!
Ash: Huh?!
Misty: Pikachu's okay?!
Wave: I see. Pikachu must have went underwater to avoid the Ice Beam. Your Pikachu is full of surprises Ash.
Ash: You bet. Now let's finish this. Okay, Pilachu?
Pikachu: Pika pika! (Let's go)
Ash: Pikachu, use Thunderbolt! Pikachu prepared to fire it's most powerful attack.
Wave: Vaporeon, use Surf one more time! Vaporeon rode another giant tidal wave about to hit Pikachu. The Electric type jumps into the air about to attack.
Wave & Vaporeon: ?!?!
Ash: Now, Pikachu, Thunderbolt!
Pikachu: Pikachuuuuuuuuu!!!
The Thunderbolt struck Vaporeon directly. The added water on Vaporeon doubled the damage. Vaporeon wiped out and fell into the water. The Water type was unconscious and unable to continue.
Misty: I don't believe it. Ash won. Misty was stupefied.
Lily: Wow, not bad. Your boyfriend is better than I thought.
Misty: He is NOT my boyfriend! Misty shouted.
Now that the battle was over. Wave congratulated Ash on his victory.
Wave: Nice Job, Ash. You certainly gave me a run for my money. I'm proud to present you with the Cascade Badge.
Ash: Awesome! Ash took the badge and was happy. But you were pretty tough too. I bet you're gonna be the best Water Pokémon Master.
Misty: Hold it! Just then, the two look to see Misty upset. There can only be one Water Pokémon Master, and that is me! She declared.
Wave: Oh, really? We'll just have to see about that.
Daisy: Hey, Misty? Her sister says with worried looks. You sure about this?
Misty: I've never been more sure of anything. She scurried down to the field.
Wave: Let's get started. The two get in position. But let's make this battle interesting. A 3v3 battle. No substitutions. The one with the most wins is the winner. Sounds good?
Misty: Fine with me.
Wave: And don't forget, if you lose this battle, you'll no longer be a Gym Leader.
Misty: I remember. Now let's go, Goldeen!
Goldeen: Goldeen.
Wave: Dive on in, Magikarp!
Magikarp: Karp karp karp!
Misty: Huh?!
Ash: A Magikarp?!
Daisy, Violet & Lily: Now there's a surprise! They were all shocked by such an odd choice.
Misty: Ha! This will be over in no time! Goldeen, Fury Attack!
Goldeen charged at Magikarp, but it easily evaded.
Everyone: ?!
Goldeen continued to try and attack, but Magikarp proved to be quicker, dodging each attack.
Misty: I don't understand. Why is Magikarp so fast?
Wave: Surprised? This Magikarp happens to be my very first Pokémon. Wave revealed. Me and Magikarp have been best friends since I was little. It was pretty wimpy back then, but me and Magikarp have been training our butts since.
Magikarp: Karp! (That's right) Magikarp said happily remembering the good ol' days.
Wave: So when someone who claims to be a Water Pokémon expert, so easily calls a Water type weak by it's looks, it makes me sick. Magikarp, show her how tough you are! Tackle and make it a good one.
Magikarp: Kaaaaaarp! Magikarp rams into Goldeen with enough force to knock Goldeen out of the water.
Misty: Ah! Goldeen! Misty ran over to check on it. It had lost consciousness.
Daisy: One win for Wave.
Ash: That Magikarp is really tough.
Lily: Yeah. Wave really raises his Pokémon well. The others were impressed.
Misty: Goldeen, return. She called back. You just got lucky. Wave called back his Magikarp.
Wave: No, I actually put in effort. Unlike you. He accused.
Misty: What?!
Wave: You may have a lot of Water Pokémon, but there's so much more to that! You have to appreciate a Pokémon's individual strength and characteristics and find ways to best use them. The way you use Goldeen, proves that you're nothing but a third rate amateur! He chastised.
Misty: Grr! Staryu, I choose you!
Daisy: I feel bad for Misty.
Lily: She's our sister and everything, but she has like no chance against Wave.
Ash: Come on! Maybe Misty can do it. Ash said hopeful.
Violet: Maybe. But we've seen Wave battle. So I have my doubts.
Wave: Go, Shellder! He called out his second Pokémon.
Shellder: Shellder! (Let's do this) Shellder said raring to go.
Wave: Shellder use Tackle!
Shellder: Shell! (Charge)
Misty: Staryu use Rapid Spin! Her Pokémon spun like a top, and collided with Shellder. They knocked each other back on to their respected platforms. Now use, Bubblebeam! Staryu followed up with a direct attack.
Daisy: Woah! Misty is totally putting on the pressure.
Lily: Yeah, she must really want this.
Ash: Come on, Misty, you can do it! Ash cheered.
Misty: I can do this! Misty said determined. Staryu, Rapid Spin one more time! Her Staryu attacked again. It hit Shellder directly knocking it into the water. Did that work? She wondered.
Wave: Hmph! Wave was displeased. Shellder, Tackle attack now! Shellder launched out of the water and hit Staryu right in it's gem.
Misty: Staryu, no! Misty cried seeing her Staryu defeated.
Wave: That's what you get for hesitating. Wave stated.
Misty: Huh?
Wave: As soon as you thought you had this in the bag, you let your guard down. A real Gym Leader should always be on guard against an opponent. I've only just become a Gym Leader and even I'm aware of something so simple. But you? You can't even do that.
Misty: Oh yeah?! Well just you wait, I'll show you what I got. Misty said getting more fired up.
Wave: Is that a joke? From what I've seen so far, you've done nothing but disappoint me.
Violet: Wow, he's really tearing into Misty.
Lily: She lost both battles. It's already over.
Violet: Wave is just too strong.
Ash: Misty. You gotta keep it together. Ash said noticing how frustrated Misty was.
Misty: Starmie, I choose you!
Wave: Shellder, return. Dive right in, Slowbro!
Slowbro: Slow. (Hi)
Misty: Starmie, Tackle attack!
Wave: Slowbro, Mega Punch! Slowbro reeled back it's fist and his Starmie directly, knocking it back.
Misty: Use Water Gun now! Starmie shoots water from it's head.
Wave: Confusion, go! Slowbro uses Confusion to manipulate the water and force it back against Starmie.
Misty: No, Starmie! Misty cried as her Pokémon landed to the ground unconscious. I....lost. She was in disbelief.
Violet: That last match wasn't even five minutes.
Lily: Poor Misty.
Wave: Just like I figured. This battle proved what I always knew. You'd make a terrible Gym Leader and you're an even worse Water Pokémon Trainer! He stated much to Misty's shock.
Misty: Ah?!
Ash: She lost. Ash was disheartened.
Violet: I knew this was coming, but it's still hard to believe.
Wave: If you have no business here, then please leave. This gym doesn't need any half-hearted trainers. Wave said walking away.
End of Flashback
In Cerulean City, Wave was taking care of Seel, Magikarp and Seaking.
Wave: Eat up everybody. He said happily feeding them.
Daisy: Hey, Wave? Daisy and her sisters show up.
Wave: What's up, ladies?
Lily: It's about Misty.
Violet: You see, I now you two agreed to battle, and her not being Gym Leader is one thing, but don't you think you were a little harsh?
Violet: It was like really hard to watch. I feel bad for her. I've never seen her so upset.
Wave: Hmm. Wave thought for a moment. Of course. I had to be harsh.
Sisters: Huh?!
Wave: Look, I know Misty is strong, but if she really wants to call herself the greatest, then she has to be better than she is now. She needs to put in the effort. Just look at Magikarp.
Magikarp: Karp?
Lily: Magikarp?
Wave: Yeah. When I first met Magikarp, it was really skittish and too scared to fight. But one day, we ran into a wild Mankey. I was too scared to move, and then Magikarp jumped out and tackled it. Ever since, I've always believed that even if a person isn't the best, with courage and determination, they can be great. The same applies to Pokémon when you think about it.
Magikarp: Karp! Karp! His friend said happily. Suddenly, Magikarp started glowing. And in it's place....
Wave: No way! Wave gasped.
Daisy: It like evolved into a Gyarados!
Wave: Haha! Wave was beyond overjoyed. See what I mean? You three give your sister a hard time too, but I know you girls love her.
Daisy: Yeah, I guess so.
Lily: Of course. We love our little Misty.
Violet: Even if she acts like a baby sometimes. They admitted.
Wave: Next time we see her, Misty might actually be a little stronger. Gyarados agreed.
Back with Ash and his group.
Misty: Alright! Misty shouted.
Ash: Uh, Misty are you okay?
Misty: I'm finally getting fired up. Misty swiftly ate her food and got ready. What are you guys waiting for? I need to work hard if I want to be a Water Pokémon Master. That'll show that Wave. Next time we meet, I'll beat him for sure! Misty said with newfound confidence.
Brock: Uh, sure.
Ash: Whatever you say. The two were startled by her enthusiasm.
Pikachu: Pika.
With Misty now more determined with her dream than ever, she and the others race off to the next stop on their road to the Kanto League.
