Chapter Twenty Nine.
The woman who claimed she was Amanda Ritter, spoke in a voice that sounded plain. Automatic.
Images flashed across the screen, too quick for me to catch. Then stopped on one image: a man pointing a gun to his head. Another holding a knife at a lady, who had clutched her bag, and a person near a telephone booth.
Above them, I notice some windows. The curtains were drawn, but the shadow that casted on them, I knew that a robbery was going off.
Bodies were everywhere. It was a disaster zone.
I crunch my eyes shut. I feel vomit bubbling inside me, I swallowed it back down.
Tris looked like she was going to scream into oblivion, but Amanda Ritter appeared on the screen, distracting everyone in eyesight.
"You do not remember all that," Amanda sighed. Though she snapped back into reality as if she forgot she was recording herself. "You are partially correct if you are thinking that this is a terrorist group or gang. Half of these pictures who are committing terrible acts were your neighbours, family and friends, your colleagues. This battle that has been happening continuously have been against human nature. Or at least what it has become."
My thoughts flashed to when Jeanine had Tris, Four and I in Abnegation. She blamed human nature. Human nature destroyed the peace.
However, even though I never seen Amanda Ritter in my life, I believed her a hell of a lot more than Jeanne.
I looked around me, noticing faces from Dauntless, their blue bands on their arms. Then others from Erudite. Then others I have never seen before.
"That is why you are all important, our struggle against violence and cruelty is only treating the symptoms of disease, not curing it. You are the cure."
I leaned against Tris, as she held onto Four's hand. We were tired. And I was surprised I was still standing. I could fall asleep through an earthquake right about now.
"In order for you to be safe, we divised a way for you to be seperate from us. From our water supply, from our technology. From our societal structure. We have created your society in such a way that we hope that you will rediscover the moral sense most of us have lost. Over time, we hope you will begin to change as most of us cannot.
"The reason I am leaving this footage is so that you can help us."
Help? How? When she's dead from decades ago?
Amanda sucked in a breath, before continuing on her long speech. "You will know when it's time because the footage would have been unlocked by one of the flexible minds of you. The name you give them is Divergent."
I froze as all eyes shot to Tris, Four and I.
"Your leaders should give the command for Amity to unlock the gates, where you can emerge from your isolation." She smiles as she says her next words: "This information is to be restricted to those in the Government only. You are to be a clean slate. But do not forget us."
Believe me, I don't think anybody will anytime soon.
"I am about to join your number, like the rest of you. I will voluntary forget my name, my family and my home. I will take on a new identity, with false memories and false history. But so you know that the information I have provided is accurate, I will tell you the name I am about to take on as my own."
Her smile broadens, and she reminds me of someone. "My name will be Edith Prior."
Prior. Prior. Prior. Like Beatrice Prior.
My eyes shot to Tris, who had her mouth slightly open in shock. Her eyes widens as she realise that she is related to Amanda. Her relative was one of the people who create the wall surrounding the city from the outside world.
A world they knew nothing about.
I scanned everyone's expressions. Shock. Confusion. Then my eyes land on Jeanine. She wore a hard expression, like she wish she could go back in time to prevent the biggest mistake she made.
Because people like Jeanine don't make mistakes.
Her beady eyes land on me, her eyes hardens. And she stalked over to me, and grabbed a fistful of hair.
I yelped, crouching over. I threw an elbow at her ribs and digged my knee into her side. Someone grabbed Jeanine and yanked her backwards. Her teeth clicked.
Four had Jeanne by the neck, he clenched and Jeanine's eyes bulged.
A woman, who wore slightly crumbled clothes, stood besides Four, but her eyes never left Jeanne's.
"Tobias, let her go." She said sharply, when he obeyed, she grabbed Jeanne's chin; forcing her to look at her in the eye.
"Evelyn Eaton. You're supposed to be dead." Jeanine growled.
Eaton. Four's mother.
Was today family reunion day or something?!
"You sound like you wished I was dead after all these years. Do you remember we used to be best friends?" Evelyn questioned, tilting her head slightly to one side.
I think I know where Four got his looks from. Definitely his mother. He looked nothing like his father.
Father. Eric.
I scanned the room once more: studying everyone's faces. None of them were Eric. If he isn't here, where is he?
"Cassie, you okay?" Tris snapped me from my thoughts. She looked at me with worry. "Who were you looking for?"
I bit my lip. Should I just say his name? Tris is clever enough to join the two pieces together. "The baby's father." I say, scanning the room again. "He isn't here." I added when Tris began looking around the room.
Evelyn ordered Jeanine to be thrown in one of the cells that I had previously been in. She struggled slightly to get out of the Factionless's hold, but they remained their grasp.
When the Dauntless traitors and Erudite were thrown in the cells, Tris watched her brother, Caleb, being one of the Erudite prisoners.
"Why was Caleb thrown in with the rest? He was one of us." I asked, curling my arms across my stomach.
"He joined Jeanine after a day you got caught." Tris said sadly, and smiled weakly when Four held her from behind.
His mother glanced at the couple, before speaking to me. "I'm Evelyn. You're Cassie, I'm glad to finally meet you." She held out her hand. I shook it.
"Nice to meet you too." I replied softly, my eyes heavy. "I think I'll just go for a walk." I muttered, tired of the past few days of events.
I caught sight of Tris giving glares to Four's mother. Four didn't notice.
Okay, what was all that about?
Wandering around the Erudite building, I cringe as bodies were everywhere, blood splattered on floors and walls, bullets scarred the walls, I frown at the torn photo of Jeanine.
I shrugged my shoulders, continuing my short walk; I slowed down to a stop.
"I said get down!" A voice like Eveyln's screamed. "Or I will shoot you!"
I poked my head around the corner, almost collapsing at the sight in front of me.
Evelyn was pointing a gun at one of the prisoners.
Put not any old prisoner, this prisoner was important for to not even consider him going as soon as he came.
She was pointing a gun at Eric.
Hey Little Outsiders!
Okay, pretty much from this point onwards, I will be following the book pretty much. I didn't fancy taking up the roll of waiting for the movie, or write something when in fact none of it happens.
I'm sorry for the cliffhanger! I thought the next bit deserves to have it's own chapter!
