Maxim

"I hate you." I spat and a grin appeared on her face. It was the first genuine smile she'd given me since she got here and I found myself unconsciously mirroring her expression." Come on, have a seat."

"Whatever you say, Maximus." She jogged towards the huge window in my office which was tucked away from prying eyes. She snuggled up on the comfy couch underneath it and folded her legs over each other. Tapping the space beside her, she nodded. "Sit."

"Don't ever call me Maximus." I scowled and she rolled her eyes. A small smile made its way to my lips as we settled into an awkwardly comfortable silence.

"Well," she drawled, clearly impatient." Are you gonna talk or not? I don't have all day."

"The door's that way and it's unlocked too." I smirked." Feel free to leave anytime you like."

"You're an arrogant ass for someone who wants to share his pain." She folded her arms. "You look miserable."

"I was going for the same look as you." I weaved my head backward, her hand barely connecting with my cheek." Is it that obvious?"

"Yup." She nodded remotely." What's up with you?"

"Okay." I sighed and let my head fall back to the headrest. I propped both arms behind my head and watched my biceps bulge out. From the corner of my eye, I saw Vivi swallow and I mentally applauded myself for wearing my favorite tank top today. " Something weird has been going on."

"You don't say." She replied dryly. She was definitely trying to rile me up but I found myself smiling like an idiot instead. " Apart from your whole existence?"

"Do you know why I asked if you were stalking me the day we crossed paths on the quad?" I ignored her sly remark. " I did that..."

"Because you're an asshole?" She cut me off." And a pompous prick?"

"It's huge, I know." A chuckle escaped my lips when her face scrunched up in disgust. "Could you please not interrupt me? This is really serious and I haven't exactly shared it with anyone."

"Oh," she sounded sincere. A quick glance at her and a worried expression was resting on her face. "Continue."

"Well before that, I've been getting gifts. Cards, flowers, chocolates, anything you could think of." I nodded." It was great and all until it became more personal."

"Personal how?"

"Personal as in I started getting messages." I gulped as the memory of the day I'd gotten the very first message flickered in my mind. Pushing it out of my head, I continued." Really creepy messages from some random person."

"What did the message say?"

"Obviously, whoever that is, is in love with me." I replied, a little proud of myself and she groaned." I mean who wouldn't?"

"Then why do you seem so sad about it?" She was glaring. " That sounds like just the thing to boost your ego."

"True true. I seriously didn't mind." I exhaled." I didn't even mind that much when I was in the hospital. I was sure the private investigator I'd hired would sort it all out, until.." my voice trailed off.

"Until?" She pressed, her voice dripping with curiosity. " Until what?"

"I met someone." I let out slowly. "I met her and everything changed. "

"Oh." Something tinged her voice. Sadness, anger, I couldn't quite figure it out." Your girlfriend?"

"What?!" I almost choked on my saliva. My head whipped towards her and the expression she donned wasn't one I was expecting. My own saliva had almost killed me and I was expecting her to at least be happy about it,but she wasn't. Instead, she stared at me with big green orbs which were silently pleading with me to give a negative response to the question she'd just asked. " What did you just say?"

"I asked a simple question." She rolled her eyes, her lips pulling downwards in a frown. "Is she your girlfriend?"

"No." I found my lips tilting upwards." At least I don't think so."

"What do you mean you don't think so?" She spun to face me, her emerald green eyes glowing." Don't play with me."

"Your interest seems to have increased since I mentioned a girl." I smirked, her irked expression filling me with an unexplainable amount of joy. " Do I smell something fishy?"

"I'm just wondering how unfortunate that girl is." She scowled." Just continue."

"Okay." I wanted to ruffle her hair but decided against it. I'd be dead before I knew it." She isn't my girlfriend per say, I don't even know if she likes me."

"You don't say?" She gasped shrewdly, her hands flying to her chest. "Who in her right senses wouldn't like the Maximus Woods?"

"Don't call me that. It's Maxim or Max, not Maximus." I chided through gritted teeth. " No one calls me that."

"Why?...."

"Nothing." I cut her off and she flinched. I ran a hand over my face and sighed wistfully." I'm sorry, my emotions are all over the place."

"It's fine." She nodded." Continue. Tell me about her, I could help you tell if she likes you or not."

"Well." I found myself smiling again." She's feisty, aggressive and really really violent. She's literally a firecracker waiting to explode. She claims to hate me but somehow ends up around me."

I mentally slapped myself for saying that last part. I hadn't even realized what I'd just said till the words had rolled out of my tongue, and I prayed silently she wouldn't catch on to the fact that I was talking about her.

I kept a straight face on, patiently waiting for her reply. But it never came. Instead, her head hung low, causing her pitch black locs frame her oval face. Involuntarily, my hand made its way to her face, tracing lazy shapes on her cheek. Her head whipped upwards, her eyes mirroring something I just couldn't figure out.

The setting sun cast it's warm glow on us, it's gentle rays splashing more colours on her hair and making it look more vibrant than it originally was. My thumb grew a mind of its own, tracing the outline of her pink plump lips. She responded positively to my touch, her lips parting only so slightly. I blinked twice, to prove to myself I was dreaming or probably imagining things, but the scenario still remained the same.

My eyes flicked from her face to her lips, while she patiently waited, anticipating my next move. Like some sort of magnetic force, I gently gravitated towards her, all sense of my reasoning locked up in a box and tossed away.

"What the hell Dude!" A voice I wasn't expecting to hear roared towards us, knocking us out of our trance. Curse that boy named Liam." What's the use of a phone if you don't ever use it. Just toss the damn thing into a river, so we'll all know you..." He stopped abruptly, just noticing Vivian and I.

"What are you doing here Liam?" I queried, hoping he'd hear the anger in my voice and turn around. Instead his glare moved to Vivi who was trying desperately to make sense of what was going on. " Didn't anyone teach you to knock?"

"What's she doing here?" He countered. His hair was tossed back, his nostrils flaring up. His eyes raked over Vivian in a disgusting way, and even I could feel the chills he was sending her way. " After everything I told you? You're impossible Max!"

"I'm impossible?!" I scoffed, pushing my glasses up my nose." I'm impossible! Says the guy who just barged into my office, without knocking and has no regard for my guest."

"Well forgive me if I barged in." He bowed in mock surrender, his sneering voice fueling my anger." I had no choice. You weren't opening up that's why I decided to come in. Obviously that was a bad idea, I didn't know you were occupied."

"What's that supposed to mean?" I grabbed him by the collar, gazing at him through slitted eyes." What exactly is that supposed to mean?"

"Max." Petite fingers crossed over my right shoulder." Don't."

"Yes," Liam spat furiously." Don't puppet Max. Don't be reasonable in all this so she can get close to you and hurt you."

"Hurt you?" Vivian repeated." What are you talking about?"

"Don't play dumb with me girlie!" Liam pulled himself out of my grasp, whirling towards Vivian." I know what you're up to and it's not going to work, not when I'm around. So I'd suggest you take your bloody lying ass out of here."

"How dare you talk to me like that!?" Vivian's hand collided with Liam's cheek. " Who the fuck do you think you are to talk to me like that?"

"You see that Max?" He turned to me, a maniac smile tugging on his lips. " She just hit me.."

"Get out." I cut him off." Just get out."

"Wow." He clapped slowly, the sound reverberating loudly in the room." She's supposed to leave not me!"

"This is my office so I decide who leaves and who stays." I stared him in the eye, my gaze never wavering. " Out. Now."

"I'll leave." Vivian's voice snapped me out of my reverie." You two sort whatever this is. And you, " she jabbed a perfectly manicured into Liam's chest continuously. " You're lucky I can't think straight right now, or else you'd have regretted ever coming here."

"Vivi, " I called out, but the only response I got was the double doors slamming against each other." Don't go."

"Good riddance if you ask me." Liam scoffed, propping himself against one of the bookshelves.

"I didn't ask you, did I?" I ran a hand through my hair." What the hell is wrong with you? Why did you do all this?"

"You're asking me?" He retorted incredulously." She just fucking hit me in front of you and you're asking me."

"You deserved it." I let out through gritted teeth." You know nothing about her, so what in the wide world gave you the right to talk to her like that?"

"Please." He scoffed loudly." I know everything about her. She's a cheat an she's definitely you're stalker. Can't you see?"

"I can't see!" I roared." I can't see anything. All I can see is that you were wrong and you're being a dickhead by not admitting it."

"Wow." He let out a sadistic laugh." It's worse than I thought. She's totally gotten to you. Was that one night so special it's clouded your entire sense of judgment?"

"Liam!" I watched little rivulets of blood trickle down his cheek. He barely winced at the cut my silver watch had caused, instead he held my gaze, a deadly look strewn over his facial features." Never say that again."

"It all makes sense now." He nodded slowly, his jaw ticking in response." You know what, somehow, somewhere I believed dad was wrong, but now I'm not so sure anymore. "

And with that, he walked out of my office, leaving me further confused about what Vivi, the stalker and dad had to do with each other.
