In Which the Sky Smells Good

It was dark again, but it felt safe this time-- as if Leo were wrapped in layers of warmth and protection. The scent of nutmeg and cinnamon, apples and fresh air flooded his senses. She smells like blue sky, Leo thought. He became aware of the arms that cradled him close, the rise and fall of her breathing, the comforting heat of her body as she rocked him back and forth.

Then, he heard her voice.

Leo, Leo, Leo,

You came back.

You're home.

Leo, Leo, Leo.

His name, over and over again. Her soft hair caressed his face as her tears burned little paths of flame across his skin. Leo wanted to hold her, to tell her he loved her. But he couldn't move, couldn't even open his eyes.

His finger began to tap.

iloveyouiloveyouiloveyouilove--

Then the comfortable darkness swept over him again, and his finger stilled against her wrist.

Leo's last memory was of her fingers tapping his shoulder.
