have answers

to my questions

where is the man

in the sky

why are we so

lost

as a people

why don't we

love each other

a little more

and help each other

love ourselves

and why can't we

understand

these basic things

like people deserve

to live

why do we turn away

when we could be

saving lives with

words

why do we close our

eyes

when we see

people getting

hurt

i can't stand by

and watch this happen

but i do

and you do

we all do

we've been

conditioned

to shut our mouths

and let life

run its course

but what if it

runs all over you

the way your ex did

and your mother in law

the way that your

best friend

told you

that you weren't as good

as her new friends

the way presidents

have walked all over

our people

the way anger

has clouded minds

evil

has left orphaned children

weeping mothers

broken girls and boys

who just wanted

love

and paid for it

dearly

where is our

humanity

or is that gone too?

did it leave when

we enslaved people

or when we lynched them

did our humanity

disappear

when we kept quiet

so that it wasn't

our names

in that week's obit section

did our humanity

softly fall away

like a cloak we wore

until it was summer and

we had no

use for it anymore

or did we even have

humanity

to begin with

we're an

imperfect people

a hurting people

an unfinished

project

that nobody had the

time or energy

to clean up and

make presentable

we're an unfinished

dialogue

left hanging on cruel

words

that nobody really meant

we're an unfinished

handshake

where fingers touched

but nothing more happened

we're an unfinished

people

on an unfinished

planet

maybe we're

unfixable too
