We all know that Halloween is the festival of wearing costumes and tricks and treats. But is Halloween really bounded till that? No, right? So let’s wonder, how did Halloween even come to existence and what made it so special.

ORIGIN OF HALLOWEEN

Halloween celebration was established over two thousand years ago in Celtic Ireland by farmers. Initially, the Halloween festival was known as Samhain by the Celtic farmers which meant end of summer. This was a time to forget about the summer and hope for a productive winter. Celts believed that October 31st was the specific day when the season of death came into contact with life season and thus allowed dead spirits to rise among the living.

During Halloween festival, Celtic farmers gave sacrifices and build big bonfires to chase away dead spirit in hopes for healthy crops that following year. Celts would as well wear masks and dress up in skins of animals so as to masquerade themselves as spirits. Christianity developed into dominant religion in the eighth century. In order to snoop away paganism believes in Celts, a Christian pope named first of November as “All Hallows Day” or “All Saints Day.” However, although the Celts acknowledged the festival, they still kept on their tradition and after a short while, the so called All Hallows Eve was changed into present Halloween.

Wow. What a chilling origin of Halloween! *shudders*

So now that we know about how Halloween came into existence, it’s time to get into one of the movies made from a book that I like a lot and it gives me goosebumps to even say the name: THE CURSE OF LA LLORONA.

WHO IS LA LLORONA?

In Latin American folklore, La Llorona (also known as  “The Weeping Woman" or "The Wailer") is a ghost who roams waterfront areas mourning her drowned children. In a typical version of the legend, a woman named Maria marries a rich man with whom she has two children.

One day, Maria sees her husband with another woman and in a fit of rage she drowns their children, which she immediately regrets. Unable to save them, she drowns herself as well, but is unable to enter the afterlife without her children. In another version of the story, her children are illegitimate, and she drowns them so that their father won't take them away to be raised by his wife.

Recurring themes in variations on the La Llorona myth include white dresses, nocturnal wailing, and an association with water. So if you ever see a woman in white dress sitting by a pond or a river and crying or sobbing or wailing, run till you don’t reach your house and never come out! It probably means she is going to kill you, but only if you’re a child. So grow up fast! Just kidding!

WHAT IS THE STORY ABOUT?

The movie begins with a happy family in a beautiful field playing. Two boys, a mother, and a father. One of the boys gives a necklace to his mother and then they play hide and seek. The same boy keeps calling for his brother and mother, but there’s no response. He keeps walking until he sees her mother choking his brother in a pond and he dies. The boy tries to run away but she gets hold of him too and chokes him to death. This story is about La Llorona, a woman who hunts down children and kills them for her own selfish needs and satisfactions.

TITLE:

That title creates a perfect suspense as to what is the story about. Very eye-catching and intriguing.

EMOTIONS:

Each and every scene in this movie arises emotions. Hatred, fear, disgust, amusement. Just name it. Everything is there.

MY OPINION:

My opinion is that you should definitely watch this movie. But only if you can handle being freaked out at times. This movie has always been one of my favourite movies because of the suspense it creates and the plot setting it has. I have watched it so many times, I’ve lost count of it. This movie is beautifully scripted and the visual and audio effects are perfect as per the respective movie scenes. But most importantly, this movie stands out from other horror movies and that’s what makes it exceptional. The way the story has been derived from the myths of La Llorona is amazing. But...is it really a myth? Or is La Llorona really searching for the children’s souls?

Can you hear that? The weeping? I bet you can, because I can too. But don’t let her know that you know she’s here. She doesn’t like to be noticed. And don’t look behind. Otherwise, she will understand that you know about her presence here. And I think we all know the ramifications of that action.
