Have you come across the black fires? They're only ever seen this late in the season. Once all the leaves have fallen off and crumbled and turned to ash, the children go out into the night and celebrate. 

They celebrate with black flames and black smoke that fills the air and rains down ash over the town. It's light gray and looks like snow and the children play in it. 

The adults hide indoors when the children play.

No one knows whose children they are. They don't belong to anyone in town. They come from the mines, eyes black as coal.
