Aster and Percy were trapped in the house with the thing in the basement. It whispered, even from the coffin, directly in their ears. "Let me out and I'll reward you with eternal life," it said.
That didn't explain why the doors wouldn't open though. The thing in the coffin didn't have power, not while it was trapped. But the previous owner had mentioned one more thing so casually it hadn't registered with them until this moment.
"Sometimes the ghosts won't let you leave. It's usually not a big deal though. Give them an offering and they'll be sated for a while."
