Bats

The bats were big. Their wingspans made vultures look like sparrows. Big, furred bodies, swiveling pink ears, and sniffling snouts that reminded the townsfolk of the pig farm down the way, just outside of town.

They took to the gifts of fruit quickly, gobbling up the town's entire stock of fruit in a single week. But they were gentle, soft creatures and they had a tendency to latch onto houses.

One day, like a dozen hot air balloons, the bats took to the sky, each taking a house from its foundation.

The only problem. The houses couldn't stay in one piece.
