The Batu Caves' development
Surprises us
Tents line the entrance,
Hawking clothing, veggie burgers, and Indian sweets
To a Bollywood soundtrack
Sadly, my appetite hides
A giant golden statue
Lord Murugan, god of war,
Flanks colourful triple staircases
To green-capped limestone peaks.
Late afternoon,
Crowds trickle
Monkeys replace them
Playing with trash on the steps
In the high-ceilinged caves
Concrete platforms and stairs stretch
Past man-made structures and stalactites
At the end, a simple Hindu temple
Sits showered in natural light
Two days after Thaipusam Festival
The volume of leftover garbage
Is the temple's most memorable feature
Celebrations' forgotten element

Thanks for reading!
Not all the garbage was as pretty as this last picture (and it seems I chose not to capture images of most of it). I don't mean to bring down the Batu Caves as a destination. Any other time of year, it would have left a different impression, and it's still a very worthwhile place to visit as you can tell by the pictures.
