Chinese lakes don't jive with my mental images. My ideas of tranquil paths with quaint shops and bicycle trails are taken from vacations in my home province.
Constant flowing traffic, sidewalks around the lake brimming with people, countless vendors and fancy restaurants shatter my assumptions about West Lake. Still, the willows sway and the lake lights up beautifully.
Soon, a musical fountain show begins, hot from a 1980s time machine. Lasers create basic clip art images in the mist. Rotary telephones and unicorns dance across the sky to 'Simply the Best'. We stifle our laughter to avoid offending impressed onlookers.
