Chapter Twenty-Three:
Mind-readers, and birthday gifts.
Rain's POV
I sigh. I really hope I'm not only imagining the brightening in the sky. I forgot the sun even existed.
I walked out of the cave, looking up at the clouds, seeing a couple of blue splotches stretching across the cloudy atmosphere.
I looked at the ground, examining the muddy soil underneath my feet. Even though it's brightening up out here, the ground will still need some time to solidify.
leafs started to turn yellow, orange, and some red here and there. Starting to get chilly out here... I sighed, making my way back into the slightly flooded, wind-blown cave.
"Hey, Sun?" I tapped Sunny's shoulder, wanting to ask her something. She turned around to look at me, cringing hard as Storm slipped on a muddy puddle, skidding his tiny palms painfully on the rough, hard stone floor.
"What is it, Rain?" She shook her head slightly, grinning at the cussing seven-year-old.
"It's Riv's birthday in a couple months, right?" Just want to be sure.
Sunny nodded, slowly turning the grin into a mischievous smirk. "I mean, your his girlfriend, y-"
"Yes, yes, I know. I was just making sure!" I interrupted, smiling nonetheless, my face turning red. "Anyway, should I wake him up the same way I woke Storm up?" I smirked, mischievously nudging Storm as he passed by.
"Don't put anyone through that again, Rain." Storm sighed the word 'that'.
"Awe, why not? Didn't wike being woken up fwom your beauty sweep?" I teased him, holding back laughter.
"What? Ew. No. I'm not a girl!" He turned towards me, scowling.
"Don't have ta be a girl ta get cha beauty sleep," I pointed out, returning his gaze with a smirk.
Storm rolled his eyes, grumbling as he walked away, leaving me with Sunny again. Fang circled around Sunny's feet, yipping, begging to be picked up.
Sunny sighed amusingly, and slowly bent down to pick up the heavy, furry pup.
"I think... You should wake him up. But not by screaming until Ocean looses her mind-"
"Yes, please don't!" Ocean called from the entrance, spinning back around to continue guarding the cave.
Then I realised how quiet it is in the cave; even the waterfall seems quiet as it whispered into the river which led to a small body of water.
Sunny seemed to have realised it, too, so she spoke in a quiet yet mischievous whisper. "Wake him up with your first kiss, Rain."
"What?" I hid my reddening face, anxiety fluttering inside me like a horde of butterflies attacking my stomach all at once, head burning.
"What, don't want to?" She teased, smirking. "Or... Too scared to?"
"What? No. Fine. I will." I take that as a challenge. Bet I can!
"If you don't, you owe me for lying." She teased, crossing her arms. "Deal?" She held out her hand, her other arm wrapped around a squirming pup.
"Deal." I grab her hand without thinking, then suddenly began to wonder... What would I have to do to owe her? Oh well. I decided. I won't have to owe her!
Sunny walked away to take guard duty, leaving me with my feelings. Just anxiety, mixed with a little bit of determination, and- God, I'm a nerd.
I sat down on one of the barstools, summoning a cup of coffee from the depths of hell. Or... Wherever it comes from.
Who knows, mayne it's made with Holy water? I dunno.
I let out a hefty sigh. Stay happy. I flinch at the sound of someone pulling out the stool next to me, and sitting in it.
I look to my left, sipping my hot coffee, to see Anne beside me. "I happened to overhear your conversation with Sunny," She smirked.
I tried not to look flustered- Keep in mind a four-year-old was able to make me flustered. God, I'm so pathetic.
"You're not pathetic, Ray!" Some people looked at Storm as he called from across the cave. Cloud, Riv', and Bird- Yes, Bird finally showed up.
"Oh, so you can read minds, now?" I sighed. Uh-Oh.
"What? You said that out loud." He confronted me, making his way across the muddy cave.
"Mmmm-no." I frowned, seeing seriousness in his gaze as I denied saying anything aloud.
"Oh. Welp. Looks like I have yet another power." He shrugged, smirking.
Damn it, he's becoming too overpowered. I laughed inwardly.
Storm flexed his arms, grinning. "Am I now, Rain?"
"Oh, you goofball!" I ruffled up his hair, gently pushing him back to the other side of the cave. "Read someone else's mind!"
"Okay. Hey, Riv'!"
I sighed, sipping my hell coffee.
River's POV
I glanced at Storm as I guarded the small cave with the 'prisoners' inside, a small stream trickling through it, giving them fresh water to drink. Not the best idea, considering that was our closest source of fresh water.
Back to boiling some, I guess. I scoff.
"Rivveeerrrrr!" Storm groaned. "Stop daydreaming!"
"Oh- uh-" I cleared my throat. "What is it, Storm?"
"I agree, we shouldn't have given them our closest water source." He nodded.
"I know, right? Now we have to one, travel, two, maybe even have to boil the water wait did you just read my-" I paused. This is Storm, of course he just read my mind. "Never mind."
Stor' threw his head back, and let out a laugh. "Not the reaction I was expecting, but it'll do."
"'It'll do'?" I repeated, confused.
"Uh- I dunno- anyway, bye! By the way, Rain wants to-" Rain dashed out of nowhere, tackling Storm, clasping her hands over his mouth.
"Kick Storm's ass!" She finished for him, dragging him to the ground.
Damn. She can be vicious sometimes, can't she?
"SuRe CaN-" Storm bellowed as she dragged him into the shadows. "HeEeLp-!"
I grinned. Rain wants to what- kiss me? I shrugged. Welp, can't let her make the first move, now can I?
"Hey, Rain?" I called to her from the guard post thing, smirking. She gave Storm a look saying I'm watching you, Storm giving her the same look.
"Hm? Wassup?" She asked, voice softer than usual.
"Once the ground is firm enough, wanna go take a walk somewhere?"
"Where?" She asked, curiously.
"You'll see." I teased, crossing my arms.
"Oh, damn it River, you know I hate surprises." She smirked.
"You'll like this one, don't worry."
"Mmmmmkay."
I know you will.
