Let's call them fighters not sufferers.


In the last chapters, we've looked at mental illness and also stigmatization of those with mental illness. Another thing that can also lead to the stigmatization is the fact that some people are not vast with the facts about mental illness and some still believe in the myths of mental illness hence the lingering of the stigma.

So, this brings us to the topic of discussion "Myths and facts about mental illness." Firstly, what is myth?
Myth can be said to be false beliefs and if we should use that detention in mental illness it can as well mean, false beliefs on mental illness.

The myths on mental illness can further aggregate the stigma against mental illness. An example is a common myth that says "if a mentlly ill'ed person seek help then people will refer to them as crazy" which is untrue but due to the fact that this myth are spread across lips, both the ignorant ones and the non-ignorant ones, victims refuse to seek help.
Note that these myths below is gotten from the internet and a couple of facebook images I saw.

Learn the fact, dispel the myth and quash the stigma.

Below are some of myths together with the fact about mental illness.

Myth: bipolar disorder is just mood swings
Fact: people with bipolar disorder are no more violent than the general population, unless abusing drugs and alcohol.

Myth : people that are mentally ill will not recover from their illness.
Fact: yes, they may not fully recover from but they can still be able to live life like a normal would if they undergo proper treatment.

Myth : people with mental illness are faking it to get attention from others.
Fact : "faking" behaviours is actually the symptom for different kind of mental illness.

Myth : people with mental illness are violent
Fact :  people with mental illness are not likely to be more violent than anyone else. Infact, they are more likely to be victims of violent crimes than the general population

Myth : mental illness is rare.
Fact : mental illness is more common than AIDS, cancer, diabetes and heart diseases.

Myth : people could control bipolar disorder with more willpower.
Fact : you can't snap our of having a broken leg nor can you snap out of bipolar disorder.

Myth : bipolar disorder is just an excuse to erratic behavior.
Fact : bipolar disorder is as real as diabetes, arthritis.

Myth : children don't experience mental health problems.
Fact : even very young children may show early signs of mental health disorder. 1/2 of all mental health disorder show first signs before a person turns 14 while 3/4 of mental disorders begins by 24. Unfortunately, less than 20% of them receive the treatment that they need.

Myth :  Therapy and self-help are a waste of time, why bother when you can just use pills.
Fact : treatment of mental  health problems varies depending on the individual and could include mediation, therapy or both.

Myth: PTSD is a military man disease.
Fact: PTSD is not just a military man disease. Any one can have it, rape/sexual victim, a domestic abuse victim, survivor of a natural disaster or even someone who did not face any violence or physical threats themselves but happen to witness someone who did.

Myth: I can't do anything for a person with a mental health condition.
Fact: friends and families can make a big difference. Reach out to them and let them know that you care. Learn and share the facts about mental health especially when you hear something that isn't true. Refuse to define them by their diagnosis or using labels such as "crazy"

Learn the facts, dispel the myths and quash the stigma.
