"I have to do better."

"Why do you feel that you have to?"

"Because it feels like I have to prove a lot to people."

"Why not do it for yourself then? Do better because you want it for yourself, not for other people."

"People keep saying things like that: do things for yourself. Easy to say, but it's difficult, really, especially when you've been living to compete, been competing to survive the mad reality of life. And then you wouldn't even know that you're not only trying to prove things to people, but you're also trying to surpass yourself over and over and over again. It's you against the world and yourself all the time."

"But isn't that tiring? To compete against yourself and the world?"

"All the time. But if I pause for a second, I'll be a thousand steps behind."

"My dear, you have to learn how to accept that being better does not always mean a step ahead of others. Sometimes being better is to be able to live without envy, regret, and guilt."
