Those Manchester Nights

Start from the beginning

“Dan,” I whisper, not even getting a flicker of recognition from him, “Dan I know something’s bothering you.” I bought one of my hands up to his face and turned him to face me. His eyes were crinkled as I noticed a slight tear he was trying to hold back. I reached up towards his face more as he let the tear slide down his cheek, catching it with my thumb I bought his facer a little closer to me so I could lay a gentle kiss on his lips. I felt him smile a little into the kiss but I couldn’t help but taste the slight salty taste from the tears he’d obviously been shedding before I was out here.

I pulled away slightly and looked up and down his face. The sadness now growing as the barrier he was trying to hold up was beginning to fall. “Dan,” I whisper, caring his face gently in my hand, “Please, talk to me.”

Dan lets out a big sigh before turning out to the city again, “Ok,” he let out a huff, “As I was walking around town, I saw something that I thought wasn’t an issue anymore.”

I tilt my head a little, “What’d you see?”

He let out a hasty sigh before standing up from his chair and moving closer to the edge of the balcony. Feeling slightly panicked I got up from my chair and joined him; both out hot chocolates sat side by side on the coffee table.

“I don’t know why I’m upset by it really…” Dan spoke quietly to himself, “It’s not like they were doing it to me…” I placed an arm around him and allowed him to lean in closer to me. Before speaking again I felt his fingers lace with mine, fiddling with ring he gave me the first day we met. It wasn’t an engagement ring or anything, I just saw it in the window whilst we were out and he insisted he’d buy it for me, well, only if I promised him he’d be in my life forever. “I can’t believe you still wear this.” he lets out a small giggle before turning to me, “You know how much I love you don’t you?”

I laugh a little before nodding my head, “Of course dummy. I love you too but; why’s this important though?”

“Well,” Dan hesitated, “I don't know. I guess. Urg, well as I walked through the town earlier I saw two guys. I’m guessing they were together like the way we are,” he froze his speech, grabbing his hot chocolate again for a quick gulp, “I don’t know. There was these two other guys and well, they were beating the pair of them. Telling them that if they ever saw them together again they would kill them and well. I JUST STOOD AND WATCHED PHIL! They were like us! They were happy, not harming anyone and these guys, they were… Phil, one of them looked at me. The couple people I mean, he looked at me as I just watched. I wanted to run for help or even help personally but I was too scared! I stood there and fucking watched!  I’m a huge disappointment of a human being, especially one who supports and is apart of LGBT and well, it’s been torturing my mind since I left them. I managed to run and get help after it had happened but it’s been playing on my mind that I should have helped sooner! You should be ashamed of me! You don’t deserve a coward as a boyfriend, I’m sorry.”

He slammed his head between his folder arms that were balanced on the edge of the balcony, “and the worst part of was…well Phil. I imagined it was you! I saw you, I just watched you as your head was slammed against the floor repetitively. Phil… Just…I’m sorry. I’m an awful human being.”

Before I could stop him he dashed past me, through the glass doors and flying into his bedroom, well we didn’t really use it as a bedroom anymore but it was still nice to have an extra room.

Of course I chased after him but I didn’t make it in time before the door was slammed in my face. “Dan!” I called out, my voice hopefully making it through the wooden door, “Dan, let me in! Please.” I leant my head against the door. Shaking it slowly and speaking in a much quieter and soothing voice, “Dan, what you did wasn’t wrong. Even if your timing wasn't perfect, you still ended out helping them. That’s more then what a lot of people would've done. Most would have acknowledged the situation and carried on with their day! Dan you helped, you did the decent thing! You’re a decent human and I’m proud of you.” A small smile appeared on my lips as Dan’s previous words carried on to ring in my ears, “Also, even if you imagined me in that situation, it’s actually strangely adorable…”
