The sound of the bell exploded around the building signalling the start of lunch. The sudden rush of students poured out from the classrooms as they sprinted and shoved to get to the canteen first before all the decent food was gone. That was all students, except for Dan.

He stood alone outside his classroom and took a deep breathe. Being the new student that joined halfway through a school year, knowing no one, was a terrifying experience. People already had their group of friends and weren't willing to let an outsider join. Unfortunately that was the cruel truth of the high school hierarchy; if you had your cliché, you were safe; if not, you might as well be shunned to the outlands.

Dan watched as the classes emptied around him until he was the only one left standing in the middle of the hallway, completely alone. He sighed, fiddling with one of his earrings as he looked down the halls; he was about to leave when a hand was placed on his shoulder.

The sudden contact made Dan jump a thousand feet in the air as he turned to face his teacher, Miss. Arnos. She was a young teacher, no more than twenty five, who had a heart of gold when it came to student's wellbeing. Her long blond hair was curled today and she was in a blue dress reminding Dan of Alice from Alice in Wonderland. She smiled down at him and spoke in a calming voice, "Are you ok Dan? You appear to be lost."

Dan shook his head and placed a fake smile on his face, "No Miss, I was simply checking my timetable to see what I had after lunch." His single dimple grew bigger as he grinned more to appear happier than he actually felt.
It appeared to work though as Miss. Arnos smiled back and turned back into the classroom. "Well," she spoke kindly, "if you ever need any help with directions or friendship issues. I'm usually here or in the staff room." Dan nodded and smiled again having a straight thought that he would never talk to a teacher about 'friends issues'; still he didn't want to appear rude so he simply thanked her and turned to leave. As he walked he flicked his fringe to the left of his face revealing a pair of sparkling hazel orbs. He didn't know what to do for lunch so he hitched his bag over his shoulders and dragged his lanky body through the hallway.

He wasn't comfortable being around and talking to people he didn't really know due to his slight social anxiety so he stayed clear of the main social spot of the school. The last thing he needed was being left alone in a room full of friendship groups. The lunch hall was the worst place for a person like him; being an introvert meant that socialising with strangers, terrified him. The thought of all those bodies squeezed into one room, being forced to socialise with one another made him feel very uncomfortable. He'd much rather be alone in a quiet place away from society.

Dan continued his journey through the school, twisting and turning through corridors passing grey wall after grey wall. The building of this school may be entirely made of glass letting in brightness from the sun but it could at least use some colour. When the sun goes away and the grey clouds appear, this place could easily replicate a prison ward.

Suddenly Dan turned a corner and found himself finding a single bright red wall. He let out a small smile, letting the single dimple appear again. It was nice to see some colour in a place so grey. It bought happiness to him as though the red shone like the sun through grey clouds.
