Chapter 3: Control

Bentley walks into our bedroom, tears running from his eyes. I look up at him, tears running down my cheek. We don't talk at first, we just stare at each other. Him leaning against our dresser. I'm sitting on our bed. The deadly silence brings chills down the back of my neck. I look back down at my feet. Finally Bentley says something, "so are we going to talk about this, or are ignoring the whole situation?" I bring my head up to look Bentley in the eyes, I wait a couple seconds before responding, "I don't know what else there is to talk about."

"We can't leave this fight unresolved because we both know that it will lead to another scream match. Let's first talk about what we both want for the future. Okay?" Bentley says as he sits beside me on the bed but, he's careful to not touch me.

"Okay. You go first," I respond with tears rolling down my face.

"Obviously I want to marry you, I want a home with you, I want pets, I want as many kids as you are willing to give us, I want to fall even more in love with you if that's even possible, and grow old together. I also want to move to a bigger city so that I can get bigger jobs. What do you want?" He grabs for my hand, wanting to be close to me.

"I want all of that except to get married and to move away from the beach. We both know that if we move to a big city we won't be this close to the beach. We couldn't just walk down our porch and have coffee. I need to be near the beach, it's where I can think clearly. I know I'm being difficult but we moved a lot in the past four years for you and your job. I just want to stay in a place where I feel at home. I might be willing to move to the city in like five to ten years. Maybe," I calmly respond.

"So where does this leave us?" Bentley meets my eyes. "I have no idea other than I know I love you and want to be with you. I know both of us won't change our opinions." I answer.

"Me too. There's still some stuff we will need to come back to and talk about it. But right now I think we just need to be together and just be us."

"Okay so we're us. I think we should do something that we both want to do."

"Have a baby? I don't think I'm ready for a baby yet. Maybe in a couple years. But not now," Bentley replies.

"Oh my God, no not a baby now. We don't even have a room here for one. I was thinking of a bigger house or a pet?" I smile, "What do you think?"

"Let's get a pet!"

"We're getting a pet!" We come together and hug each other.

It's been five days since our huge fight. The week has been very weird. We've been tip toeing around each other. Not wanting to cause another fight. I know this is not healthy but it's what we have to do until we reconnect with one another.

We are in the car driving to the humane society to hopefully find our baby. We both agreed to get a pet from a shelter as there are a lot of animals that need homes. "What are you thinking of getting a cat or a dog?" Bentley asks me.

"I'm thinking a dog. I've always been more of a dog person. What about you?" I turn to look at him as he drives. "I was thinking a cat since they are less maintenance and we both know that I'll be the one taking care of it," he smirks at me.

"I have no idea what you are talking about."

When we arrive at the shelter, we walk up together with Bentley's hand on the small of my back guiding me towards the door.

"Hi how can I help you guys?" the receptionist greets us. She has long blonde hair with the bluest eyes.

"Hey! We were hoping to adopt a pet today. Would we be able meet some of the animals?" Bentley responds.
