" I'm Oliver, by the way," he says
"Amelia".
"Such a pretty name, would you like a lift home," he asks.
She looks away. The wind flowing through her hair as she faces the ocean. She looks over at the beach where she sees a family playing in the park close by.
"I don't want to go home yet".
He walks up closer to her, touches her shoulder.
"How about I take you to a nice restaurant instead of something to eat."
She nods and follows him back to the car. She stares at her palms. They are all red from the slip. They hop into the car, he looks across at her.
She looks terrified. She hasn't been in the car since the accident. She starts tapping on the door. He starts the car, and a song comes on. She pauses and realises the song playing in the same song that was playing when the accident occurred. He looked over and placed his hand on her shoulders.
"Are you okay, he whispers.
"Yep, fine."
He drove off, heading off the bridge. The whole car ride is silent. It felt like the elephant in the room. He looks at her, as she looks out the window. He faces the front once again, and she turns her head to look at him. He catches her eye as he smiles at her. She slowly puts the window down, the breeze blowing through her hair.
He pulls up to the curve outside the restaurant. He stares at her; he couldn't believe how beautiful she looks. The sun reflected on her blue eyes. He looks so deeply into her eyes like he could jump into them as they were like an ocean. She smiles back at him. The first real smile since the accident. Her heart was thumping in her chest. She looks deeply into his dark eyes, noticing his tiny dimples as he smiles. She looks down at the floor, he places his hand on her face and faces her to him. They are both staring deeply into each other's eyes. He places his hand on her leg, she looks down and then back up at him.
"You ready," he asks.
"Yeah, I'm ready."
He opens his door and walks around to the side where she was, poems the door and helps her out of the car.
"Thank you," she says, smiling.
He offers his hand to her, and she takes it. They held hands all the way to the door. He opens the door for her as she walks in she looks all around the restaurant and gasps. She's never seen anything so beautiful.
"Wow, it's beautiful," she says, still looking around.
"I know, right."
They get escorted to a table by a young female. She's wearing a name tag; it reads Elizabeth. She looks like she is in her mid-twenties. She has dark hair and pulled up into a bun with a black and white scrunchie, and it looks nice with the uniform. She places the menus on the table.
"Thanks, Elizabeth," Amelia says
"Please, call me Lizzie."
Lizzie walks away as she smiles at her customers. Oliver and Amelia began to stare back at each other. It felt like a while until she finally breaks away and looks down at the menu. He continues to look at her and smiles; she covers her bright red face with the menu. He peers over the menu. She puts the menu down, and they stare into each other's eyes. He puts his hand on her cheek and leans in, placing his lips to hers. He sits back into his chair. His cheeks are bright pink. She stands up and walks quickly out of the restaurant. He gets up and follows her outside. She has her hands over her face.
"Hey, did I do something wrong,"
She uncovers her face. She's crying.
"No, no, you are fine."
"It doesn't look like things are fine," he says.
He pulled her close into a hug. He places his hand on the back of her head as he lets her cry. She hugs him tighter. She needed a hug with all the traumatic experiences she has been through. She couldn't remember the last time someone had hugged her. It seemed like years since someone had held her tight and actually gave her affection. She never thought she would ever feel the affection she is feeling right now.
He goes to let go, but she holds on even tighter, not wanting the feeling to end. He is starting to feel very worried about her. He lets go and looks at her.
"I never did ask you why you were going to jump off that bridge. Was it a dare?"
"No, it wasn't. I wanted to end my life just the way I ended my family's lives."
She looks up at him, wondering if he would think differently about her now that she has told the truth.
"Okay, I'm going to need a lot more explanation for this one," he says in shock.
"My family and I were in a car accident a month ago. I caused the accident, and now want to join them, but I feel like if I join them, they will hate me either way."
He looks at her; he slightly holds her hand. He notices the heart-shaped tattoo on her wrist.
"I know about the accident. I didn't realize you were her. The car accident wasn't your fault. Come here."
He pulls her back into a hug and holds her for longer this time.
"How do you feel about a boat ride around the ocean? you will love it, I swear."
"Alright, as long as you look after me."
"Always."
He takes her hand and helps her into the car.
Closes the door after her.
