[dylan o'brien]
[third pov]
When Dylan was little, he wasn't aware that he was the only person who could see the little red strings on everyone's pinky. He didn't even see his own little red string.
He slowly started to piece together that the little red string was connected to someone's soulmate. It took him a while and he was always helping his friends with their relationships.
The day he turned 18 was the coolest day of his life. He found his little red string. Tied in a little bow on his pinky, it ascended into the sky, so naturally he thought his soulmate lived in a high building or something.
But as the years went on, all of his friends eventually found their soulmates, only for Dylan to wonder why his string never moved. So he finally decided to tell someone. Tyler, his best friend, to be exact.
Tyler's red string was already connected to someone, his current girlfriend so there was no problem there. But when Dylan told him about his very own red string, Tyler's eyes went wide.
Tyler thought Dylan was crazy, as any bestfriend would, but nonetheless, he helped Dylan to figure it out.
Even when Dylan was on TV, and kissing his co-worker Holland for the show, his red string wasn't connected to hers.
It stood motionless in the sky, so one night he went out to look at the stars, in hopes of seeing where the little red string led.
As his eyes moved from his own pinky up to the stars, it clicked. His soulmate wasn't in a tall building, his soulmate had already died.
Now of course this upset Dylan to the pint where he didn't even go into work. Eventually, when the work day was done, Tyler went to his best friends house to see what went wrong. Dylan explained, and Tyler felt his heart ache for the boy.
Tyler didn't even know if it was true, about Dylan being able to see the little red strings. But still he felt bad for him, seeing as the boy hadn't left bed in days.
[y/n's pov]
when i died, i didn't expect there to be anything exciting in the after life like every one says. but i certainly didn't expect this. There were basically no rules here, no bad people (i mean come on it's 'heaven'). and most importantly, everyone had a soulmate.
i died when i was 18, the year my soulmate would discover i was dead. bummer. but i made the most of it and spent my days trying to have the time of my afterlife, because honestly there wasn't anywhere after this.
so i walked my happy self to the Head Person in charge. no, not God, the Head Person in charge. they don't have a name or a face, they just are.
so anyways i walked to the little temple and i sat down indian style, ready to communicate with the Head.
'I would like to see my soulmate please, I don't think it's fair they spend their whole life waiting just to find out I'm dead' i asked.
the Head let me look into the water and the first thing i was was those beautiful honey brown eyes. the only thing was, the eyes were full of sadness and hurt. he must have known. he had to. there's nothing more disappointing than knowing your soulmate is dead (except when a puppy leaves to go somewhere else).
suddenly i felt sad and full of hurt, i wanted to see him. i needed to see him. so that's what i did.
i was allowed to visit him in his dreams, i was going to try and tell him everything i knew each time i visited.
