These are the days where you explore attraction towards the opposite gender and I was facing no problem with that either. I knew quite a lot of guys in my class liked me. I did not know whether I liked them back or not so I simply talked to all of them but favored none. Come on, why would someone say no to attention.
Miss Myers addressed our class finally and started calling out our names for attendance. After securing her attendance register, she meticulously looked around the class. "So, kids; I see that all of you have taken the liberty to choose seats of your choice. However, I see the notorious bunch clustering together and am compelled to spread them out. I do not want to hear any complaints from other teachers regarding them." Miss Myers announced. The back benchers groaned to show their frustration. I was unbothered. This happened all the time.
Miss Myers paired a boy and a girl on every bench in order to decluster the notorious bunch. I was paired with Adrian Carter. Adrian was a decent chap. He kept to himself, did not have any friends, never tried to be friendly with anyone. Nevertheless, he was smart and managed to get decent grades. Adrian also commuted to school in the same bus as me and Kylie but we had never exchanged a single word till now. I hadn't ever spared him a glance because I honestly did not care. He wasn't a forthcoming person himself. I knew he existed because his stop was just before mine and he managed to get good grades. Yes, I was competitive like that. In fact, I never knew his last name till now.
Adrian was fair. He had a long oval face, brown eyes with distinctly broad pupils. His dark brown hair was neatly spiked up. He had very sharp face features, sculpted lips and nose artistically shaping his profile. He was really leggy and tall and was wearing a simple round neck t-shirt over his washed jeans. I would have noticed him if he wasn't so closed off. He wasn't depressing to the eyes at all.
As I occupy my seat beside him, he does not even look up to say a hi. I shrug it off. I needed positivity on my first day. A little into the lecture, Adrian started to fidget with his side of the desk. He started moving his desk as far as possible from mine. Although our benches were joined, our desks were flexible. He even shifted his bag to the other side. I wasn't expecting any friendship from him but I wasn't good with this unreasonable hostility either. I had never been treated like that by anyone.
By the end of the lecture I was sure he had some issue with me. I had politely asked to borrow his pencil for a while to which he responded by pretending that he hadn't even heard my request.
I cringed at the idea of spending the rest of the year with him. I needed a change of partner. I was finally happy when the bell rang for a recess. Adrian vacated his seat without wasting a second and I was relieved he was gone. I met with Kylie and the others during the recess. Kylie was paired with Jim Evers who had a massive crush on her. At least someone was going to have fun sitting in the class.
"I am so sure you are going to score full attendance this year.", I teased her.
She blushed, "And so are you Gin. You can't leave me alone."
I wouldn't be so sure of it. Sitting beside a hateful and morose person all day wasn't too much of an incentive to start with.
"You lucked out Kylie, not all of us get paired up with their lovers."
Kylie scoffed at the lovers comment.
"Speaking of partners, any luck cracking the ice prince?"
"Nope. I don't know how I am going to survive this year sitting beside a mannequin."
"A cute mannequin." She chimed.
"An inhospitable mannequin" I stressed out for her.
"Anyway, where are my jelly sandwiches?" I reprimanded. Kylie's mom made amazing jelly sandwiches. One bite of it led you straight to heaven.
Kylie, Andy, Joey, Sandy and I were tight. We hung out together. I had many friends but they were the ones who meant something. We decided against hanging out in the canteen since it is always crowded in the first week. People acted as if they had been starving all summer.
Joey was the clown of our group. He was really silly sometimes but we loved him. He was talking about this girl he met at his grandparent's and who kicked him in the balls when he tried flirting with her.
"Someone's not going to father children....awwwww."
We were mocking him when the bell rang marking the end of our recess.
My first day at school went pretty well except for my distasteful partner. I sucked up to a few teachers who would influence my grades, inaugurated writing into my freshly plastic covered notebooks, caught up with a lot of friends and I was back at home by noon. Not bad for a first day.
