These past two years I often saw my friends wrote something about their quarter-life crisis. A lot of them. I googled the term and found that quarter-life crisis refers to a period where people got anxious over their life. It seems to be pretty common among people my ages. Most of my friends' stories revolved around their insecurity of marriage, how they have not found their life partner yet. Some told me about their working careers, and there was a few about financials.
I think it is understandable considering we are reaching our 25+ years of life. A mature age we are recognized as proper adults. We are expected to be responsible for our own lives.
I can't say for sure I am experiencing the crisis as well or not, but I have always been an oddball who either experiences something much latter than most of my peers or it just simply does not cross my mind as a "crisis-worth-to-be-thinking" at all. I am loaded with my graduate study as it is to even stop and think deeply about my insecurities. On that note, I currently enjoying my study and I have nothing to regret on continuing my study while most of my friends chose to work or build their family.
Thinking back of it, I often got told that I did not act my age, I lack maturity, I am childish, and I am living in my own little world. I need to confess that I am never a person who is good at expressing my thought verbally, thus I decided to write it all down here. You might think that it is weird to talk about maturity when talking about quarter-life crisis, but are not those two related somehow? I mean, the fundamental basis of quarter-life crisis is, in the end, about how our maturity is tested, no? A test to determine how well we survive in this world, so to speak.
In my oldest memories, the first time I got told immature was around the time I was in 6th grade. To be precise, my friends never blurted it out directly to my face. A few months before we graduated elementary school, at my 12th birthday, a friend of mine handed over a book and a note as a present. The book was titled along the lines of "Mom, I am a grown up!". I don't really remember what the note said exactly, but I think it was telling me to act more like a grown up since we were nearly a middle school students. I am not sure whether my friend chose that book as a joke or not, but the book which I only read after entering high school, actually told you about puberty and sex education. I am pretty sure my friend took the book just by looking at the title.
Why did it take so long for me to read the content? At the time I received the book; I could not help but be annoyed. I am a little older than that friend and it annoyed me that she thought I am more immature compared to her.
Annoyed, yes. But it also made me think about, hey, am I really that childish? What does mature even mean? It is not like I purposely act cute like a little child or what. And if I can even brag, I think I am pretty much capable on handling my own life. Compared to my sister, my father is more lenient about what I did outside the house. It means he has complete trust on me on what I did outside his sight, right? At least, I think I am quite emotionally stable and rarely got bothered by what life throws at me.
˹When the life gives you lemons, make a lemonade!˼
This proverb really describes my attitude most of the time. Just a few weeks ago, a senior at my college told me how optimism I am. It is not like I am pretending to be positive or what, but I always have this kind of thinking: I have to face my problems anyway, so why blaming life on it and procrastinate to search the solution until the end? Just give it a go! This kind of thinking gives me courage and hope no matter what difficulties I found myself in.
Hereafter, I would tell you a little of my thought about maturity!
