Ixora's scream.

my head turned to see a truck flying towards our car.

the crunch of metal that filled my ears.

Ixora's scream.

Luna gasped, opening her eyes and feeling her body tense as it was pulled out of its slumber by her nightmares, again. She sat up and climbed onto her knees, pulling herself up to the side of the bed where she could look at Ixora who was sleeping on the bunk on top of hers. Luna sighed with relief when she saw that her sister was still there, sleeping, and safe. It was silly, of course Ixora was still there. She had been there sleeping when Luna checked earlier that night, but the teen couldn't help herself, especially when she dreamed of that day. That terrible car wreck that had taken their parents from her and her siblings. Luna lay back down on her bed and felt something curled up between the wall and the cushion. The teen rolled her eyes and pulled Jasmine out from behind her cushion and lay the sleeping girl to where she could be comfortable beside her. Jasmine had been crawling out of her own bed at night, opting to sleep in Luna's or Ixora's bed. It wasn't a good habit, but Luna didn't have the heart to kick the girl out of her bed when Jasmine simply wanted some company to help her sleep. Luna stood up, and lightly walked out of the bedroom and down the hall to one of the boys' rooms where her brother was staying. She gently pushed the door open and peaked her head in just enough to see the rise and fall of her brother's chest as he lay on his bed. Sleeping, and safe. Luna shut the door, before walking back to her room and getting dressed for the day ahead. Luckily it was only her and her sisters in the one bedroom right now, so she didn't have to worry about being too quiet. All of her siblings slept like the dead, and it was something that Luna was thankful for once she started struggling to sleep through the night. The nightmares started a month after their parents had died, and her and her siblings had been moved to their third foster home. This was their fifth home, and it was the last one that could take all four siblings without separating them. Luna had agreed without even asking where they were going. Turns out Lima Ohio wasn't the worst place on earth. But it wasn't going to win any awards for anything exciting anytime soon either. The teen finished getting dressed and checked her outfit out in the mirror.

Luna paused, looking at the ugly scar that ran along her forearm. The long scar ran from her wrist, to the crook of her elbow. She was lucky to have this arm after it had been smashed in by the truck. She frowned, before checking her watch for the time. Seeing that she had around thirty minutes before anyone else would be getting up. So she went downstairs and made herself breakfast, she wasn't surprised to see that Mr.Hunt was already in the kitchen. Sipping coffee while reading the newspaper like he did every morning. "I thought I heard someone rustling around upstairs. Go ahead and eat so you can help me get the kids ready for their first day of school." He gestured to the pantry. "Was I being too loud?" Luna asked, doing as she was told. In the three weeks that her siblings and Luna had spent here Mr.Hunt hadn't shown any signs of having a temper or anything, but Luna didn't want to test her luck. She knew that anything could set off a foster care parent. "Oh no, I just heard you walking around." Mr.Hunt said, looking over his shoulder, watching the girl as she reached the top shelf of the pantry to get the cereal. Luna, like always, pretended like she didn't notice, grabbing a bowl and joining Mr.Hunt at the kitchen table. "I'll try to be more quiet next time Mr.Hunt." She said, fixing her breakfast. "Lunaria, how many times have I told you to call me Stephen. Mr.Hunt is my dad." The man said with a friendly enough smile, and if Luna hadn't noticed the way that he always stared at her a few extra seconds, she would have fallen for the friendly smile. "Of course, Stephen." She said before starting to eat. After her and her siblings were pulled from their second foster home (she would never forget the way her brother cried when he told her that the woman in charge of the home had sneaked into his shower, the way her blood boiled with anger. She had never wanted to actually hit anyone in her life until then. It didn't matter that the woman didn't lay a hand on him, she had gotten too close) Luna kept careful watch. Always making sure that the grown ups that were put in charge of them weren't interested in her siblings. She was hoping that Mr.Hunt wouldn't be like the woman from the second home, but it turned out that he was. But all he did was stare, and only at Luna. She could put up with that, till she was eighteen. Anything to keep the four of them together. "So are you excited for your first day of school?" Mr.Hunt asked, folding his newspaper and placing it on the table. Luna shrugged her shoulders. "Not really, but I have to go." She admitted, eating her cereal as quickly as she could. Mr.Hunt laughed, "I like your honesty, but it could be worse. At least you are going at the beginning of the school year. Gives you a chance to make friends before everyone closes ranks right?" Luna shrugged again, yea he had a point. She didn't want to know how he knew so much about the life of a high school student. "What's with all the shrugging? Cat got your tongue?" He asked. "Sorry Mr-uh, Stephen. I guess I'm more nervous about school than I thought." Luna said, looking away from the man. It was awkwardly silent for a moment before the sounds of tiny footsteps could be heard upstairs. "That would be the herds awakening." Mr.Hunt said, standing up to go check on the kids and start getting them ready. "Before things get too crazy I want to go over a few things with you. You're my only high schooler. So you will be taking the bus. The stop for your bus is across the street, and the middle school students have their own bus stop at the end of the street. While I drive the elementary kids to their school. I make it a requirement for all the kids...and teens, (Luna once again, ignored the dirty eyes on her) under my roof to be a part of one extra -curricular activity at school. So keep an eye out for any fun clubs or sports you would want to join, okay?" Luna frowned, not wanting to join anything at school. It went against her whole plan to stay low and off the radar. "Is that going to be a problem?" Mr.Hunt asked, and there it was. That tone in his voice that some foster care parents had. The one where that showed Luna everything she needed to know. Mr.Hunt did have a temper. She just hadn't set it off yet. "Not a problem at all sir." Luna said standing up and taking her bowl over to the sink to wash it off. "Good, and like I said before. Call me Stephen." He said with that friendly smile, that fooled everyone, before he left to go upstairs. Luna sighed, before following Mr.Hunt to help her brother and sisters get ready for another first day of school.
