MIDE'S POV

Here I was shuffling between monitoring other perfects as they carried out their various duties, and at the same time mentally rehearsing my opening speech for the orientation ceremony of the new students, when I saw the sleek figure of someone I had long erased her memory from my thoughts.

I quickly left what I was doing and followed the figure from behind, trying to confirm if my assumption was right.

She looked like a lot like her
But no! It can't be her, what would she be doing here of all places unless what I overhead in the principal's office were right and not my ears playing tricks with me

I walked ahead of her and Bunmi - the principal's assistant

Oh this definitely would be her
Why else would the principal's personal assistant be taking round and helping out a new intake

I stopped in front of the library and turned my face towards them. Alas, my fears has been confirmed.

It was the bitch! Amara! This girl almost cost me a leg. Funny enough, she had no idea that I actually really had liked her.

Yes, I said what I said
Had!....... It's all in the past now. Not after what she did.

She was dating my best friend although I was the one who even showed him her pictures off Instagram and told him how I liked her, little did I know that he crammed her username searched and started messaging her on the app.

In less than a month, he introduced her to me as his girlfriend. I had no option than to follow the "Guy Code" and be happy and supportive of the relationship.

Deep down I knew I was kidding myself, Amara was a girl any guy would die for. It was no wonder I got really upset the night of the party when she refused my hug or at least an handshake.

Ok yes, I know I was drunk that night and not really in the right frame of mind but come to think of it, that was a public place, she shouldn't have done that. So as payback, I started digging up stories about her and feeding them to Smith, I picked on any thing she did and told him always making sure I made her seem totally bad.

I was just coming back from where I went to watch a football match between Arsenal and Liverpool. Arsenal was my club and it has been that way since they won the Champions league two years ago.

The match was scheduled for 9pm but I went nevertheless, I could have watched it at home but my Mom and sisters would always never allow as they constantly kept on watching that annoying channel - Zeeworld.

I don't want to go into details about the drama that Zeeworld has caused in my home cause trust me it has done more harm than good.

After the match ended and I was on my way home, happy that we had won the match and crosschecking my NairaBet slip to confirm my matches that I had placed a bet on. Next thing I felt was a big blow at my back, I had been hit by something heavy by someone.

I turned to see who it was and I discovered that it was actually three masked guys with heavy looking wooden sticks on their hands.

They started beating me brutally, hitting my legs repeatedly. I was crying bitterly and not just because of the beatings but because of my phone I knew they would take.

I had gotten the phone just last week and now I am about to lose it to these thieves - or so I thought they were until they passed a stupid message from Amara and then it all dawned, the pain of that she could go this far coupled with my fragile heart that somewhere deep down had a feeling for her, with the beating made me faint.

I woke up in an hospital bed surrounded by my Mom and sisters who were crying and shouting.

The police came and I gave a statement although I omitted the part that the assault came from Amara and why.

Why did I do that!
I had no idea, I just didn't say her name

Not until almost a week and I found out that my leg which was badly messed up would take longer to heal and I would be required to use a wheelchair for the time being did I get back to my senses and told my Mom the whole story.

Trust Moms! My Mom who had lost my Dad a year ago to a sickness he had been battling with for a long time - Cancer, they said. She was still very hurt from the traumatic experience and now this.

She called on her brother who was a lawyer and they filed a law suit against the Okoyes. The matter dragged on for a while before we decided to conclude the matter outside court as the Okoyes paid us a huge sum of money for the assault and to cover the damages caused as had called it.

After I had recovered fully and was on my two feet again. My Mom sent me off to live with her brother - the lawyer in Edo state. He enrolled me in a boarding school.

A year later I showed impressive intellectual performance in my exams and also represented the school at competitions. I also showed great leadership qualities as I was able to coordinate my class and other students in carrying out many minor works as appointed by the principal and teachers.

It was little wonder when the list of likely candidates for selection into the offices of school prefects were pasted and my name was pasted there. I expected that but not to be placed under possible selection for headboy and above all my other nominee for the category was no other person than the golden boy - Kene.

Kene happened to be from a rich family although he acted like he could care less most of the time, he was also very intelligent and above all, a lot of girls went after him. He still hanged out with rich folks but always seemed like he was because he had no choice, I mean the school is expensive and I was only here because my Uncle had the money and decided it was the best option for me, and I had indeed made him proud by excelling in my studies.

We had never actually spoken before but according to talks I picked here and there he was the favourite and obvious candidate and he had been in the school since JS 2. It came as a real shock, when I was announced the Head Boy on the selection day and he was announced the Chief Health Prefect.

Since then, he always acted like I had stolen his birthright or something like that.

So it was quite annoying after I finally confronted Amara at the front of the Health center where she looked and acted sorry for what she did. I had already made up my mind to forget about the whole matter - for now.

We made small talk and I welcomed her to the school and just as she was leaving, I stood still staring and watching her, Ken came out and met up with her and they started acting like they knew each other.

I asked Ken a question authoritatively, trying to make it clear to Amara that I had a certain level of authority over her boyfriend or who ever he was to her.

"See you around Amara." I said and turned to leave them alone before I said something rude.

"You know her?" Ken suddenly asked me, looking quite puzzled.

I just kept on walking, but on second thought, I turned and said.

"Oh yes! We have history together and we also have some unfinished business."

I turned back to leave looking rather happy with himself as I left a puzzled and confused Ken with an embarrassed Amara.
