If It Wasn't For That Night

Chapter 9

          It quite late at night when I heard that knock on the door. I opened it. "Agnetha! What's wrong?" I asked even though I already knew what had happened. She collapsed on the floor. She looked overwhelmed. Terrified.

          "Frida." I sat down next to her. Her face was wet from crying. I knew how hard it was for her to choose. How hard it was to face Bjorn and tell him the truth. I held her close to me. She felt warm in my embrace.

          "It was so hard Frida. So hard to finally give him up. These past years I had always been having to decide between both of you. It was either you or Bjorn. I... I was so scared of what he would think. Scared that he might hate me for the rest of his life."

          "Agnetha. I... I understand. You were together with him for a long time. But, I'm here now. I'll always be here for you whenever you need it. I love you." She continued sniffling.

          "So do I. I want to be with you forever. Promise me you'll never leave me. Promise me."

          "I promise." She lay there in my lap looking happier after she talked to me. She wrapped her arms around me. I smiled and kissed her lightly. "I promise I'll stay with you forever."

I stood outside Frida's door. I had never planned to come here. I guess it just happened. I knocked and hoped Benny wasn't home.

"Agnetha! What's wrong?" I looked behind her and saw Benny wasn't there. It's not like I had anything against him. I just wanted to talk to Frida. Alone. I tried to keep a brave face. It wasn't working because Frida looked worried.

I smiled weakly and stepped in. Then I crashed on the floor. I remembered why I was there. I couldn't control myself. I sat there for a minute.

"Frida." She sat next to me and held me close to her.

          "It was so hard Frida. So hard to finally give him up. These past years I had always been having to decide between both of you. It was either you or Bjorn. I... I was so scared of what he would think. Scared that he might hate me for the rest of his life."

"Agnetha. I... I understand. You were together with him for a long time. But, I'm here now. I'll always be here for you whenever you need it. I love you." She didn't understand though. How hard it was to give him up.

          "So do I. I want to be with you forever. Promise me you'll never leave me. Promise me."

          "I promise." I smiled feeling happier and hugged her tightly not wanting to let go. She smiled and kissed me. "I promise I'll stay with you forever."
