**ASHLYN'S POV**
"Damn it!" I screeched to a stop in the hotel parking lot and stared, unable to tear my eyes away, as the car containing my brother faded slowly into the distance. A lump rose in my throat as I realized how close I had been to having my twin back, and how imminent our failure had been.
"Why'd they run from us?" I turned to find that Andy, too, was watching the car drive farther and farther away from us. His expression was one of pure confusion and even a little hurt.
Matt shook his head from beside me. "They must think we're still trying to keep them apart," he answered, face a mask. I thought, however, that I could see just a hint of the sadness I knew he must be concealing, hidden deep within his eyes. "Tracking them down just so we can stop them from being together."
I frowned. "But we're not," I said. That had never been the intention of this road trip at all. We'd set out on this journey, not to punish Blade and Drake, but just to bring them home, where they'd be safer.
"Yeah, but they don't know that," Matt countered. "For all they know, we're bent on locking them up in cages on separate corners of the world."
"Umm, guys," Ashley's tone sounded strangled, but urgent, and we all turned to look at him. "Did anyone else notice the two cars that pulled out of the parking lot right after Drake and Blade did?"
All of us turned to follow his gaze. Sure enough, two identical black cars were speeding down the highway now, in pursuit of Blade and Drake. At once, my stomach twisted. "Is that...." I whispered.
"Yeah," Matt was already running toward the car. "Come on!"
We all followed him and got into the car as fast as we could. "Tell me again why these people are out to kill Blade and Drake?" I said as Matt, who had gotten behind the wheel, pulled quickly out of the parking lot and began to follow the cars.
"They're a vigilante group of a sort," Ashley explained. "The real law enforcers wouldn't travel in a car, that's for damn sure. Still, the vigilantes are more vicious than they are. It's a rule that certain breeds do not mate, in the risk of creating a child that could potentially wipe out an entire species, as has happened in our history. The species that cannot breed, that is for the Law to decide. But the vigilantes are determined not to even run the risk. They have just as much knowledge of the going-ons of every species on this earth as the Law, and if they get wind of any activity beyond that which is already known, they set out to destroy the threat immediately."
"And they think that Drake and Blade could create a child, even though they're both guys."
"Yes."
"And they think this because-"
"Because I got pregnant," Andy cut in before I was finished speaking, turning around in the passengers' seat to look at me. "We hadn't thought they'd caught up to us yet, that was why we didn't worry sooner. Turns out we were wrong."
I swallowed, biting my lip nervously. "And if they get to them before we do...?"
"Our mistake could cost both of them their life."
**BLADE'S POV**
Drake and I drove all day and straight into the night, until night had well past fallen and Drake figured that it was safe to stop the car now. We had been driving along a road that was lined by a thick forest for the past two hours, and now he was turning off onto a path that was nearly invisible in the darkness, one that lead within the trees. "We can stop here for the night," he said, bringing the car to a stop a little ways within the trees. "We'll keep driving first thing tomorrow."
