Water Friend - Minayeon

Start from the beginning

"I'll teach you!" She smiled. "I'm.. Not sure how to use legs though.. just the tail." Mina frowned while showing off her elegant tail.

"You have such a pretty tail..." Nayeon whispered. She watched as Mina's cheeks blushed, slowly sinking under the water.

"Th-thank you." She stammered.

The next day, Nayeon made sure to wear a swimsuit, waiting for Mina to come. She smiled when she saw the familiar mermaid approaching her.

"No friends?" Nayeon asked her. Mina shook her head swimming closer to her.

"You're going to drown if you drop here. It's a lot deeper than it looks." Mina warned. "Go here, it's safer." She swam closer to the shore, Nayeon could see the floor clearer now, seeing Mina more up close made her nervous. She could see the individual scales that decorated her body.

"Okay..." Nayeon slid down into the water, a new wave of nervousness washing over her as she couldn't touch the bottom at all.

"You're okay.. I got you." Mina whispered, placing her webbed hands on Nayeon's arms. Everything about Mina felt extremely different. Her fingers felt like prunes, like when you soak your fingers too long and they become all wrinkly. "Just..." Mina frowned looking down at Nayeon's legs then at her tail. "Here. Hold on." She tugged Nayeon back to the shore line where she could touch the ground, then dove under the water for a few moments. When she came back she had a seal with her.

"I thought you didn't bring a friend?" Nayeon chuckled.

"I need help okay?" Mina laughed. The seal barked at her before swimming closer to Nayeon. "You're sure?" Mina frowned. The seal let out another bark and Nayeon watched her communicate effortlessly with the seal.

"So you speak seal?" Nayeon smirked.

"You don't?" Mina asked her. Nayeon shook her head and watched as the seal circled her. "Okay, so he says when humans swim with their legs kicking..." Mina mumbled. "Don't know what that means." She frowned. The seal barked again at her, circling around her. "Repeating it is not helping!" Mina whined.

"I know basics Mina." Nayeon laughed. The two looked at her, Mina blinking a few times before swimming closer to her.

"Perfect because... I have a tail, and it wouldn't be great to start from the beginning. That and Merpeople are born knowing how." She explained. Nayeon nodded, wanting to know more.

So everyday, the two would meet, Mina giving her lessons on keeping herself afloat while Mina kept close to her, just in case she panicked. Days when the sun was shining and made everything warm, Nayeon would sit on the dock, with Mina lounging next to her enjoying the sun's rays.

"So you come out here and be lazy with the seals?" Nayeon asked her.

"Yup." Mina yawned, stretching her arms. "It's great really. But sometimes you just need to bask on land to make everything feel right sometimes." She rolled onto her back, smiling at the newfound warmth she was feeling.

"Why do you keep coming back?" Nayeon asked her.

"We're friends right?" Mina frowned, rolling back on to her stomach. "Friends.. Hang out?" She asked. Nayeon nodded, looking out at the ripples on the ocean again.

"I just.. Don't want to make you come out here and risk your life everyday." Nayeon frowned.

"Don't be silly. I wouldn't put my life in danger for anything." Mina chuckled. The two were silent for a while, until the seals on the other dock started barking at Mina. She lifted her head to see two shark fins swimming closer to them. "Maybe one thing..." She whispered while trying to pull herself off the dock.

"What is it?" Nayeon frowned.

"Mina!" A loud voice shouted. Nayeon looked over and saw two more creatures staring at the two of them. Both of them glaring at her.

"What do you think you're doing! Getting out of the water for a human?!" The pink haired one frowned.

"Come on.." The dark haired one swam over to Mina, holding out her hand for her. Nayeon saw the differences in the three of them. Mina had mint green and white scales covering most of her body and patterned throughout her tail. The pink haired one seemed to have a light purple tail with black and white markings from what Nayeon could see through the water. The last one seemed to have a light grey tail with white markings with a few patches of pink scales.

"I'm not ready to go back.." Mina frowned, pulling herself away from the two, pushing herself closer to Nayeon.

"Mina... You have to." The pink haired one frowned.

"Yeah.. Everyone is worried." The dark haired one whispered.

"How did you even find me?" Mina asked.

"Mako." The dark haired one spoke quietly. Mina growled, shaking her head. "He told me that you didn't want to be found. It took us days to get this far." She whispered.

"And it's going to take us days to get back home. Lets go now Mina." The pink haired one frowned.

"Wait... You aren't from around here?" Nayeon frowned at Mina.

"Of course not! You think our kind would live this close to people?" The pink haired one scoffed.

"Sana stop. She's human. She doesn't know." Mina scolded. "Just... Give me a few minutes." She whispered. "In private." She glared. The two rolled their eyes, diving back under the water and swimming away from the two.

"So this is really goodbye..." Nayeon frowned at her.

"For now... I'll come back... One day when I'm able to swim freely." Mina whispered.

"Who are they?" She asked.

"My friends. My father must be turning over every shipwreck looking for me." Mina chuckled. "And they took it upon themselves to find me." She smiled slightly. "But.. I'll come back.. I promise." She whispered before pulling herself into the water. She resurfaced in front of Nayeon, seeing her tears.

"If this is the last time I see you, I want to say that I've enjoyed spending everyday with you." Nayeon whispered.

"Me too. I'm glad I got to meet such a nice human." Mina smiled. She lifted herself up, pressing her lips to Nayeon's shyly before diving back under the water. Nayeon blinked a few times, watching her resurface near her friends. She watched for a few moments, until they dove under the water... Never to be seen again.
